Tour 18 Houston
Played On 07/13/2021Great course BUT…
Played today between all of the rain the area has been having. Was ok with cart path only golf and that wasn’t an issue. The fairways were green and tee boxes were mostly level.
The problem was the greens. I played 7/13 and the greens looked like they had been punched/aerated overnight and bombed with sand. They were so sandy that the wet conditions made it almost like putting on a beach where the surf hits the shore. Greens were impossible to read today because of this. Now is this a big deal? Not if it’s mentioned somewhere, but there was no aeration indicated on the GolfNow reservation and no one in the pro shop informed me of the aerated greens. These were seriously punched in the last couple of days because the holes were not even close to filling in and grounds crew were rolling greens all during my round.
I love Tour 18 and will always go play there, but there needs to be better communication to guests from staff on these types of matters.
Red Wolf Golf Resort
Played On 07/24/2019Good Value Round
First off, this course is great to play for the price. The shots you get to play/practice make it a high value play.
Conditions: fairways are a little rough and inconsistent. There are bare spots that are very thing, and there are thick spots you’d almost consider rough at other courses. Greens were surprisingly receptive and still soaked fro.m watering so approach shots stuck well! Greens rolled a little slow both times I played although they were a bit faster this last time.
Pace: got around in under 4 hours. There was a junior tourney today but that didn’t hinder pace very much.
Staff: always friendly and helpful before getting the round started. A little disappointed there’s no beverage cart on course but not a big deal.
Overall a great place to play. Friendly staff who don’t act inconvenienced like that of the other course down the road.
Thank you for such a great review. We have plans to constantly improve the current conditions of our golf course. This will ensure that the fairways and greens are pure throughout the year. Thank you for playing Red Wolf Golf Resort!
Tour 18 Houston
Played On 07/25/2018Always a Good Time
Always a good round to be had at Tour 18 Houston. Pace was good, never rushed or waiting on groups. The holes are fun to play and always offer a new challenge with pin placements.
The course was in really good shape! Fairways were tight, rough was fair, and greens were running true and a bit speedy. Only complaint is that groundskeepers were working on the course as groups were playing. Nearly hit two because they stood in middle of the fairway while we teed off.
Sadly there was no bev cart service, but the staff inside is always friendly. Practice area was great, and the putting area gave a good indication of how greens would be running for the day.
Overall you can’t go wrong with this place. Tour 18 is awesome and worth the green fee.
West Fork Golf & Country Club
Played On 04/22/2018Bang for Your Buck Course
I’ll address the individual areas from above. Overall the experience st West Fork was nice. The course is challenging from the varied tees and makes you play some shots that are a bit of a one off compared to perhaps normal practice shots you hit. I played with the wind moving opposite it’s normal direction which made some holes trickier. A playing partner gave some good advice on shots which helped a lot.
Pace of play: I thought I was goi g to be done in about 3-3.5hr based on how quickly my group played the front side. The starter let us go a few minutes early from our time which was nice. However I wasn’t told we were playing behind a mini tournament group. Holes 12-18 were agonizingly slow, so much that the third member of our group quit early. Knowing about the tournament groups would have at least given us a chance to prepare.
Course Conditions: okay this is tough because it rained the day/night before. I expected soggy/cart path only conditions. However, the greenside and green edges were really rough. There are a lot of sand packed areas that aren’t bunkers. The greens were mowed really tight which made them almost muddy like after the rain. Still they rolled nicely and were tricky to read. The fairways were in nice shape considering the weather prior to the round.
Staff Friendliness: had a friendly greeting walking in. Got checked in quickly and had no issues. Starter was great and informed me of my group I’d be playing with. No issues here.
Value for Money: I think this course is a good value, and I look forward to playing on a drier day and normal wind conditions. Not knowing the course made shot selection tricky, especially with gusting winds out of the north.
Course Layout: loved the style of this course. Some wide fairways, but positioning was key. Par 3s weren’t too long from the Blues to make club selection impossible. Par 5s were a good challenge, making you choose risk/reward shots.
Off Course Amenities: I didn’t use the food options at all as we were playing at a good clip. However I noticed there wasn’t an on-course beverage person. It almost seems counterintuitive to golf in Texas.
Forest Creek Golf Club
Played On 08/16/2014Great Course!
Played here for the first time. Conditions were great for a hot summer day. Greens were pretty quick but rolled true. Fairways were nicely mown and the rough wasn't terrible at all. Only problem was the pace of play. Had a threesome a couple groups ahead that took a little while, and the twosome ahead of my group stood over every shot like it was to clinch a major. I don't mind taking the time to enjoy the course so long as it doesn't hinder pace for others.
I'd definitely play here again! This is definitely one of the better public courses in the area!
The Reserve Vineyards & Golf Club - South Course
Played On 07/15/2014Beautiful Course!
I really enjoyed The Reserve South! The par 3s and 5s had plenty of length to balance with the par 4s to make the course a nice challenge. The staff was super friendly, and overall I thought the facilities were tops! I was in the Portland area from Texas and had heard great things about The Reserve. It's definitely on my list of "play it again" courses. Greens were fast, but not impossible.
Bluebonnet Hill Golf Club & Range
Played On 03/13/2014Pretty good this time out.
Course was in ok shape. You don't play here for lush fairways. Green looked nice, but can get mowed really thin, where approach shots might not always hold. Still, friendly staff and pace of play are always awesome here. Got around in under 3hr with a stop at the turn.
Vaaler Creek Golf Club
Played On 02/01/2014Eally Nice Course
Beautiful, wide course layout. Tees, fairways and greens were in great condition! Enjoyed the mental challenge of this course, as course management is key in shot selection. Facilities are great and there's beautiful Texas Hillcountry all around!
Mill Creek Golf Club - The Mill Course
Played On 8/4/2013Would like to see it after punched greens recover.
Played here for the first time. Found out greens had been punched earlier in the week. Greens were hard to get shots to hold on to going in, and putting was slow. Still, te rest of te course was nice. 5th hole was closed for renovation, but the alternate hole was neat.
Odd thing about the course was the layout. Some 1/2 mile treks that would have been a deal killer had my group been walking. Still, neat course with some challenging holes.
Riverside Golf Course
Played On 7/14/2013A good little course, hope it sticks around.
I thought Riverside was a neat course to play. The layout for a "shorter" course made it challenging in picking tee shots and playing position golf. Nice open fairways and guarded greens gave it a fun aspect, and the greens themselves were in pretty good shape considering current drought conditions. Tee boxes were pretty level, but the rough areas were almost non existent save for around greens.
Roy Kizer Golf Course
Played On 3/12/2013A littleTLC would go miles here!
I generally have had good experiences here. The last couple of trips out though, I haven't been as nearly impressed. I thought the Kizer course was overall in pretty decent shape. However there always seemed to be some sandy patch on greens. Also the staff didn't seem willing to provide a whole lot of info when checking in. I wasn't told where to tee off from (apparently they don't like to have anyone actually start their round on no. 1) and they weren't announcing groups about to start or anything. Made for a very awkward grouping when I had to seek out my playing partners and then wait for a group making their turn to find out we needed to go off on 10 instead of 1.
Jimmy Clay Golf Course
Played On 12/15/2012Better in the summer.
I've played at Clay/Kizer numerous times. It's been a while since playing on Clay, but overall I thought the course was pretty bad. One of the great things about Texas golf is that it's available year round. Northerner a flock to the state every year and most courses prep for the onslaught after summer. Clay didn't it appears. The greens were terrible! Mown so short that had any watering occurred overnight you'd be putting in mud patches in the morning. The practice greens were in better condition. Tees and fairways were good, but the green conditions really ruined the round for me. I think I'll stick to my other regular course on the northeast side of town that is really good about their greens. At this time of year, I can't recommend a course that can't keep their greens in better shape I cooler weather than they do during a Texas summer drought. Try them in spring/summer months.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. Thank you for the 4 stars! We aim for a 5-star experience, so we always welcome feedback for improvement. Thank you for playing Tour 18 Houston.
