Solid, affordable, golf venue

Our golf association has played Vaaler Creek 4 of the last 5 years. It is a fun layout with exceptional playing conditions in the winter and spring. It is the only golf venue in the region (Texas Hill Country) that overseeds Tees, Fairways, and Greens for the colder months. For the golfer, you will be hitting shots off fairways with lush green grass to greens that are covered with green grass that is smooth and will hold your shots. This is a true Hill Country layout, with elevation changes, running brooks, and wildlife roaming the course. The architect followed a minimalist design philosophy because the land provided all there was to build a competitive, fun golf course.

Golf in Paradise

I have played about 40 courses on someone's top 100 list. This is easily a top 100 for setting and beauty.
There are probably 10 holes that could be signature holes on any course you could play. If you are looking for a course to play that is fun, picturesque, and challenging, this is it!

If your wife doesn't play golf and needs to be pampered while you play, this is it. The resort is expensive but the views rival anything in Hawaii or Mexico. $15 for a beer.

The course is located about 45 minutes from the Liberia, Costa Rica airport. It is served by United and Southwest. About a 3 hour flight from Houston.

Good but not great

January is the dry season, so the course played hard and fast. It probably had not rained in 60 days. That being said the course was very playable except for the bunkers. Being a RTJ course there a lot of them. They were hard as a rock.

Quite a lot of interesting holes. The par 5s are all excellent. Best greens that we played on a 2 week stay in Costa Rica. Fast and smooth. If you go this time of year don't expect a lot of green but there is a loot of grass on the fairways.

Interesting Layout

This is one of the more interesting courses that I have played in the area. It is basically a mountain course with a lot of elevation changes. Course conditions were spotty with fairways in excellent shape and bunkers in poor condition (quite a few bunkers). The staff was excellent in managing tee times and pace of play.
