Oak Creek Golf Club
Played On 10/24/2018Great Layout!
2nd time playing Oak Creek in the last few years. The 1st time, they had just re-opened and the course was still coming in to a finished product.
This time, I was blown away. The conditions were a 9 out of 10 with very very few things to nitpick. A very fun layout with a couple of friendly holes to start to the round which increase in difficulty throughout. You won't play at a crazy fast pace here mostly because how far apart some of the holes are. It's built around a very nice residential neighborhood but the houses never come into play and most are blocked by trees.
Greens were in excellent shape and even the ones that weren't pristine rolled very true. The fairways were all in very good shape and you were rewarded for hitting a drive down the middle. Tee boxes were clean and well kept as well.
I'd actually recommend Oak Creek over Lake Presidential which is right up the street. Better conditions, friendlier staff and a much more enjoyable round in my opinion. Can't wait to go back!
Lake Presidential Golf Club
Played On 08/28/2018First time playing Lake Presidential and I honestly left feeling a little confused about how much I enjoyed the round.
On one hand, the greens were extremely slow, bumpy, sandy ect. They had obviously been punched in the recent weeks which was fine. The problem was how inconsistent they were cut. Very tall and shaggy in some spots and thin and firm in others. The cups were very poorly cut for such a premium course. Made for a very frustrating round rolling putts.
The fairways were excellent shape, zero complaints there other than hoping people would do a better job repairing divots.
The other real issue outside of the greens was that the course was cart path only "due to the heat". It's obviously the courses discretion, and credit them for keeping the fairways in good shape but this made the round extremely unpleasant as most of the cart paths are elevated a good bit off of the fairways. On a hot day, treking up and down steep hills before and after every shot took alot of enjoyment out of playing the course.
The layout is fantastic. Very fair, but challenging. Course knowledge would be of great help.
I'd like to go back in the fall and play the course in its prime condition, which is what it looks like the grounds crew is already prepping for. My fear is, once it is in good condition it'll be priced well north of comparable courses in the MD/NOVA area. I'd try it again, but would have to make sure it wasn't cart path only before my arrival.
The Pearl Golf Links - West Course
Played On 07/14/2018As consistent as you’ll find.
Played this course several times on trips to the Myrtle Beach area and each time it plays just the same as the previous year. Greens were very good considering what everyone else in the area is dealing with. Fairways were in great shape as well. Tee Boxes could use a little Love on a few holes but all and all a very solid course.
The finishing 3-4 holes are always very challenging and the rest of the course presents a nice mix of links/parkland style play.
Lakes/Waterway at Arrowhead Country Club
Played On 03/03/2018Arrowhead was in excellent condition. Layout was very fair and challenging. Would play again without hesitation.
Tidewater Golf Club
Played On 02/18/2018Another consistent round at Tidewater. I have played this course roughly 6-8 times over the past 3 years and each time it has met my expectations. There are several unique holes on the course that visually remind you that it's vacation time. The #4 Par 4 is far and away my favorite hole of the many courses I've played in the Northern end of Myrtle Beach. The # 8 Par 5 is also a very under rated hole with a great view of the Coquina Yacht Club area from the tee box.
The course conditions have been above average every time I have played which only includes trips in February, July and September. In spring, I can only imagine how great of shape it's in.
The amenities are top notch as well. A great driving range placed perfectly between #1 and #10 which makes warming up before you tee off a breeze. The food is maybe the best golf course food i've ever had. Great breakfast and lunch items as well as mixed drinks and good beer selection. It's one of the few courses that I don't stop off for food before my round.
It's not the place to play if you are looking for a fast round. The challenging Par 3's tend to jam groups up from time to time and there's a good 20-30 minutes of just driving from hole to hole. It's a very large property to navigate around. 4.5-5 hours should be expected, more on a hectic day. That said, even on a slow day you'll enjoy being there with such great scenery.
Rivers Edge Golf Club
Played On 09/01/2017Worth the drive!
Played after a terrential downpour with almost 3" of rain just before we teed off. Course was soaked but the layout, staff and surprisingly stellar greens made it worth the trip north. One of the best layouts in the Myrtle Beach area you will ever play with lots of opportunities to work on your approach and short game. Would play again and again and can only imagine how much fun the course would be on a better day. Really enjoyed our experience.
