Lookout Mountain Golf Club
Played On 03/09/2020Challenging course with stunning views
First time out here the other day. Spectacular course views! Reminds me of Dove Mountain. Course was well maintained. Challenging but fair course. Even the short holes were sneaky tough. Blue tees: 6500 yards. White tees 6000 yards. We elected to play white tees. Unless you are a very good golfer, do yourself a favour and play the white tees. You'll enjoy the course a lot more. Bring lots of balls. A couple of tight holes. Club staff attentive. Point in Tyme restaurant excellent food with reasonable prices. Only thing that I would have liked to have seen is GPS on golf carts. Still, we will definitely be back.
Western Skies Golf Club
Played On 02/14/2020I won't be back to this course anytime soon
Large golf complex in Gilbert. First time playing it with my wife and some friends. Our handicaps range from 3 - 16. Round completed in 4 hours. Most tees needed to be cut and are sloped so not level. I don't like the layout with par 5, then par 3, then par 5 , then par 3. Multiple groups stacked on par 3s as a result of this. Greens were horrible. They were shaggy, rough and uneven. There appeared to be some chemical applied to the greens to make the bare areas the same color as the greens. Some of the greens had sand over them. Sand in the bunkers nice and fluffy but the bunkers looked quite poorly maintained. Cannot believe we were charged $60 to play here. There are courses in the area that charge as much or less and that are much nicer. We will not be returning here.
So sorry you did not enjoy your round. Glad to see that you played in 4 hours, which is great this time of year. We are working hard on improving conditions each day. We would love for you to come back and try us again.
Dobson Ranch Golf Course
Played On 02/06/2020Nice course with very good value
Our group played this course for the first time. We've heard frequent good comments. Quite a nice complex with driving range, chipping area and putting green. There was a frost delay of about an hour. After delay, we were able to tee off. Course is not long, but there are some longer and more challenging holes. Fairways were in good shape. Bunker sand was generally soft, although there was the odd one where the ground was quite firm. Greens are sloping and on this day, they were quite fast. Despite the frost delay and the number of players on the course, we finished in 4.5 hours. The only negative about this course is that, because there are few trees, you see golfers all over the place. On a number of holes (number 1/9 and 10/18 in particular), they are definitely in the line of fire although we never heard anyone yell fore. All in all, we enjoyed the course and would certainly play again. We did not have a coupon nor were we Mesa residents, so we paid the rack rate of $55 pp.
Superstition Springs Golf Club
Played On 01/26/2020Waiting....waiting....and more waiting
Played on a Sunday with a scheduled tee time of 1pm. Went to pay for the green fees and the person said he gave us each a complimentary bucket of balls as they were “a little behind with the start times”. ½ hour later, we were finally able to tee off. Literally had to wait to hit every single shot on every single hole due to a group 2 ahead of us. As the day dragged on, it became apparent that we might not finish our round of golf. Ultimately, after 4 ½ hours and only finishing 16 holes, we had to cut short our round due to impending darkness. As our friends are in Mesa, we’ve played this course several times and THERE ARE ALWAYS TIME ISSUES WITH THIS COURSE. We’ve never been able to play this course in under 4 ½ hours, but this was a new low even for this course.. Course is a good test and always in good shape, but management has done nothing to time and pace of play issues. We are done with this course and will no longer give them our money.
The Golf Club at Dove Mountain - Saguaro/Tortolita
Played On 02/12/2018Beautiful but Tough
Played Dove Mountain on sunny but windy Monday. Not too many people on the course. The course is really quite scenic and there was a sense of isolation. It was in great shape. Although the greens looked like they were in poor shape, the ball rolled smoothly. There are a lot of bunkers on this course and, with the slopes of some of the holes, shots do have to be placed strategically. This was made even more challenging with the 15 mph winds on this day. As a mid - handicapper, I really had to decide where I was aiming, either to bail out or to get the least damaging place to miss. Shots into the brush are gone, so bring lots of balls. The greens were also very challenging, demanding precision speed and line. I think of myself as a good putter so I did enjoy them. In speaking with one of the staff, he said that speed on the greens on this day was not much slower than what the pros used to have to contend with so I really had an appreciation for their putting abilities. This is a tough course. This is not a course for a beginner. Good test for low handicappers. The rack rate is apparently about $170. Our group was able to get a much better price due to online promotions. I would definitely play this course again.
Grand Canyon University Golf Course
Played On 02/09/2018Felt Claustrophobic Here
Located in the heart of Phoenix, it is impressive that a full 18 hole golf course was able to be put onto such a small piece of land…and this is part of the problem. This is a traditional style course. It is flat with no elevation changes. The holes are quite close together. You see people all over the place. It felt a bit claustrophobic. Some of the tees are quite close to the greens so you always need to be aware that you could be in the line of fire. I was actually quite surprised that I didn’t hear ‘FORE’ more often. The holes do not show a whole lot of variety in their design. Much of the course appeared damp. There was mud in a number of places. Yet other areas appeared burnt. The bunkers were well maintained. Each green appears to be a clone of each other, being guarded by a green on the left and on the right. The greens do have some undulation, but a number of them had issues. Number 8 green is especially bad. Driving range available where driver can be used. However, I noted that they also have mats so I’m guessing that these are sometimes used. Nice things about this course included the friendly staff, drinking water on the course and beverage cart. Still, despite the $55 green fees in February, I do not like this course and will not be back.
Thank you for taking the time to review Lookout Mountain Golf Club! We are very happy that you enjoyed the golf course and the layout. The course is a bit deceiving when looking at the yardage but the layout presents a challenge in itself. We look forward to welcoming you back!
