Marine Park Golf Course
Played On 09/24/2021Best Affordable Course in the City
It’s been a few years since I moved out of NYC and it still remains as the best option in the city (excluding Ferry Point). Greens have always been fast, undulating and well maintained but noticed improvements across the tee boxes, fairways and bunkers. Great layout with some nice views of Manhattan in the background. Pace of play was slow (as always with city courses.) Although it’s quite far, you can make a great day out of it by taking the ferry from wall street to rockaway and taking a 10-15 minute Uber from the ferry terminal to the course.
Montauk Downs State Park
Played On 08/30/2021Well Deserving of Praise
Course has been mentioned as one of the best public courses in the country and it's warranted. Everything about the course is great from the conditions and layout/design. I would rank this up there only behind Bethpage Black in terms of the best public courses in Long Island. The only negatives of the day was the extreme humidity and the amount of bugs (spray is a must).
I think it's worth it if you make a weekend trip out of it and spend a night in Montauk/Hamptons. Otherwise a day trip might be pretty exhausting unless the drive is less than 1.5 hours.
Lido Golf Club
Played On 10/14/2019A Good Option for Locals
Course conditions overall could use improvement but their greens are extremely well maintained and roll true. With the exception of the signature 16th hole that requires precision shots, the rest of the holes are open with minimal hazards. The course plays completely different depending on the wind conditions for the day. Several holes are right along the water, which offers some great views and also flat, which makes for an easy walk. Their greens fees are affordable and aligned with the current conditions of the course.
Championship at Harbor Links Golf Course
Played On 10/01/2019A Solid Option for a Weekend Splurge
Greens fees are expensive for non-residents but the conditions from tee to green are top notch for a public track and maybe slightly below a private club. It's also extremely tough to walk so when you factor in the cart and their complimentary lunch special, its actually a fair deal. The course layout is very interesting with no two holes being the same and extremely fast and undulating greens. Our group had a nice pace given we played on a weekday, but I can see the layout causing some pace issues for weekend crowds, although we did see rangers driving around. Highly recommended for those willing to splurge a bit.
Peninsula Golf Club
Played On 08/26/2019Average Course, Good Option for Locals
Overall, the course is well maintained and the short layout is pretty open and straightforward with many holes running parallel with one another. The greens have pretty significant undulations but are a lot slower than they look. Unfortunately, there was a senior women's league that teed off ahead of us and the pace was going to be 3.5 hours for 9 holes so I walked off after 6 holes.. The course caters to seniors, which makes me think the pace is always going to be on the slower side.
Brentwood Country Club
Played On 08/25/2019Fair/Average Course
The course is good for locals and beginners as its fairly open and short, even from the tips. The course allows you to use every club in your bag and practice other clubs off the tee besides driver. Course conditions are slightly below average but prioritize the conditions of the greens, which makes it playable. If you set your expectations appropriately, you will not be disappointed. For a weekend early morning tee time, we played in under 4 hours.
Brentwood Country Club
Played On 08/25/2019Fair/Average Course
The course is extremely short even from the tips and includes very generous fairways. Its an easy course to work with very little elevation changes. Course conditions are below average but greens are in fair shape and makes putting tolerable. If you set your expectations appropriately, this course is not a bad option especially if you want less crowds and quick pace. For a Sunday, 7am tee time, we finished in about 3:40. For the conditions, it should probably be around $30 but their rates are about average for the area but definitely not as well maintained as other town owned courses for the around same price.
Red at Bethpage State Park Golf Course
Played On 08/11/2019Enjoyable Round
The first tee box is officially open after setting up as a temporary par 3 as the fairways have been recovering from PGA Championship tents. With the exception of the first hole fairway and some beat up tee boxes, the course was in great shape. The long fescue has been cut down and the rough is not as long as it usually is making the Red a little easier than it normally plays. Pace of play was slow at 5 hours but expected given it was a weekend afternoon tee time.
Blue at Eisenhower Park Golf Course
Played On 08/03/2019Good Layout, Average Conditions
The layout is short and playing from the tips is not a challenge length wise. The course has lots of dog legs and fairly straightforward with no blind shots. From a condition perspective, it doesn't get as much attention compared to the Red and White. Lots of browning on the greens but still playable. After playing all Eisenhower courses in the past two weeks, the one thing I did notice is that the course does not rake the bunkers. Being one of the first three groups out each morning, there is no reason why the bunkers shouldn't be fairly smooth but it looks like they haven't been raked in weeks. I guess maintenance just focuses their attention on cutting the grass.
White at Eisenhower Park Golf Course
Played On 07/27/2019Solid Course, Great Greens, Enjoyable
The course has gone through major renovations over the years with the addition of numerous pot bunkers, so its safe to say the original RTJ design is down to the greens. Locals have said that the White's original layout was boring and repetitive. The addition of the new bunkers along with more defined fairways that are narrower and and slightly curved give each hole some depth and character. The greens are in great condition and rolled true and surrounded by fairway length runoffs that give some tight lies for chips and pitches. Pace of play was around 4 hours for 6am on a Saturday.
Red at Eisenhower Park Golf Course
Played On 07/25/2019Solid Course, Improved Conditions
The greens have finally recovered from what locals have said has been a rough couple seasons after the former greenskeeper used the wrong fertilizer and destroyed them. Greens rolled fast and overall in great condition. The layout is great, especially if you like to cut/fade the ball with many dog leg rights. An enjoyable round and will definitely come back.
Red at Eisenhower Park Golf Course
Played On 07/25/2019Enjoyable Round, Greens Have Recovered
A classic course layout that's very straightforward with well placed bunkers subtle undulating greens. Previous negative reviews of the greens were accurate, but they have rebounded and show no signs of damage. A course regular that I got paired up with mentioned the former greenskeeper ordered the wrong fertilizer and poisoned the greens a few years ago.
Bergen Point Golf Club
Played On 07/04/2019A bit of a hidden gem.
For the most part, the course conditions are average except for the greens, which are in great shape and roll fairly quickly. The layout of the course is fairly open with minimal trees and plenty of water hazards. If you don't put it in the water, there's a good chance you'll have a shot at the green even if you are out of the fairway. Pace of play was great and played around 4 hours which is rare to see for courses in the area and a nice way to get away from the crowds at Bethpage. It was an enjoyable round.
Black at Bethpage State Park Golf Course
Played On 06/15/2019Beautifully Tough
As a local, the few times I've decided to test myself and play the Black was during the off-season when the grass has yet to be fully grown. It's already a beast and playing it a couple weeks after the PGA Championship, makes it even more of a beast. The course layout speaks for itself and you know its special when you are probably getting your behind kicked but still have the biggest smile on your face. The course itself takes about 5 hours to walk on a normal pace but unfortunately, this round took 6 hours due to a group in front of us breaking every etiquette for pace of play. I usually carry but do recommend using a push cart as its a very tough walk, especially in the summer.
Oyster Bay Town Golf Course & Clubhouse
Played On 06/09/2019Solid Course
I have had my eye on this course since learning it was an early Tom Fazio design and decided to play a Sunday twilight. The course was empty and finished 18 holes in 4 hours which I didn't think was possible for weekend rounds in NY. In terms of layout, the course allows you to play every club in your bag. Although narrow, you can hit driver to wedge or long to mid iron on many of the par 4s. The greens are small-mid size, roll fast and in great condition with extreme undulations making approach shots the key to scoring. Although overall course conditions could be improved, greens and bunkers were in terrific shape, which are the most important in my opinion.
Pelham Bay at Pelham/Split Rock Golf Course
Played On 09/15/2018Average
The course conditions are above average but the bugs are a bit annoying. Previous posts suggested an extremely bad mosquito problem so we came well prepared with bug spray. But, there weren’t any noticeable mosquitoes but there are a ton of nats and bees. Pace of play was surprisingly ok (4.5 hours) given a Saturday morning tee time. Greens are in good condition but teeboxes and bunkers need some work.
Championship at Harbor Links Golf Course
Played On 08/20/2018Great Layout/Conditions but Overpriced
Considering it’s a Hurdzan/Fry designed course (Erin Hills) the course layout is fun and interesting with lots of elevation changes and undulating greens. The course was a little wet from rain the night before but overall, conditions were very good. I have always kept an eye on this course but hesitated due to high greens fees and reviews of poor pace of play. I finally played this course during an outing which ended up taking 5 hours but it was expected going in. Although the outing fee was slightly cheaper than the standard rate, the price was offset by complimentary breakfast, lunch, beverages and range balls. Although I enjoyed my round, I don’t think I would recommend it for the $100+ greens fee unless money isn’t an issue and you play it on a weekday to avoid a long round.
Red/Blue at Sunken Meadow State Park Golf Course
Played On 05/26/2018Nice layout but long round and slow greens
The layout of the course is actually pretty nice. The greens have nice undulations, but they are extremely slow because they don’t roll/cut them enough. And considering this is Memorial Day weekend, then this is definitely the norm for the course. Even with a tee time at 7am, the round still took 5+ hours.
Green at Bethpage State Park Golf Course
Played On 04/21/2018Solid Course, Hilly
Considering the greens were aerated 3 days ago, I was skeptical about the conditions going in but they actually look like a they have been recovering for a couple weeks, pleasantly surprised. The course has lots of elevated tee boxes and greens making it a tough walk/carry for the first time out this season. The layout has a nice straight forward design, and length off the tee is not necessary. It’s also nice to peek over at some of the black courses holes since it shares the same area of the park.
Forest Park Golf Course
Played On 09/29/2017Odd Layout
From tee to fairway, course needs some help but greens are in good condition (a little slow). The layout of the course is a bit odd. Some holes are fairly open and some are extremely tight. Some approach shots are impossible with overhanging trees in the way. You definitely use every club in your bag. Extremely short par 5's and somewhat long par 4s. Stay alert on greens and tee boxes as you can easily get hit with incoming approach shots.
