About
The worst thing about aging for a golfer, is the continuing loss of distance. Born in 1935 and began playing golf when I was about 19. I love the game, but have never been better than about a 19 handicap. I was a member of a country club for a few years in the early eighties, but prefer to play different courses. Played 36 different ones in 2012.
I believe in the PGA program "Tee It Forward", but it's very difficult to make myself, and others, play from the red tees, but 'reds' are usually 4600 to about 5200 yds and that's about right for us old guys who can't drive the ball more than 180 yds. I wish the Golf Courses would change the color of those red tees and stop calling them 'ladies or red', just call them 'FORWARD TEES.'

Keith Hills Golf Club - White Course
Played On 09/10/2016Marshall was annoying
First encounter. Marshal was critical that I drove over to him on cart path at an angle instead of 90 degrees. I said nothing.
Second encounter at the very next tee box. He told us to speed up because the group in front of us were exiting the green on this par 5. I commented that 'they're a threesome.' He ignored that logic.
Third encounter. Marshal told us to let the threesome through us because we were behind by two holes.
We were squeezed between two threesomes. Of course we had to wait for the new threesome in front of us to exit the next fairway before we could hit. Then, the new group behind us teed off while we were still in the fairway. One of our guys yelled 'four' back at them....and they yelled, 'Get out of the way, then.'
It was a very uncomfortable round of golf. We played in 4 12 hours, which is pretty normal on a weekend.
Country Club Of Johnston County
Played On 5/24/2013Good condition for playing areas. Other areas needed attention.
Fairways and greens were nice. Greens were slower than we would have liked. We played late morning on a Friday. Nobody in front of us and we let a twosome play through.
Sandy Ridge Country Club
Played On 5/18/2013We used to recommend this course, but not as of May 18, 2013
We play here (37 miles from home) about once a year and have since it opened. What has happened? Fairways are thin and greens have a lot of bare spots. Even ball washers had no water.
We used to play the course fairly often in the 90s, but less since other courses have opened closer to home.
We won't go back for another year. How disappointing.
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
Played On 9/24/2012Great layout, but greens and traps very poor in late September
We only play there when we find a 'deal.' It's long and has more traps than most courses. I can attest to that.
We've played this course half a dozen times since it opened about 4-5 years ago. I was getting better every time as it matured. However, this time, they've obviously had a tough summer insofar as greens are concerned. There are lots of 'bad' spots and repaired spots that haven't healed, yet.
The most disturbing thing was that players were not repairing ball marks in the soft greens.....and, even though there were plenty of rakes, deep footprints were very evident in all the traps. Peope had to step over rakes to get to their ball, coming and going.
UNC Finley Golf Course
Played On 9/11/2012Possibly the best manicured course I've ever played....anywhere.
From the very friendly and informative 'starter' to the very last hole of this course, we were raving about the place. Bentgrass greens were absolutely perfect. This is surprising, considering three other courses I know, in the Raleigh, NC area, have had a disastrous summer with their greens.
Tee boxes, fairways, bunkers and greens were in such fine shape there's nothing else left to judge. Their new clubhouse is well on its way to being completed.
Magnolia Greens Golf Course - Magnolia/Camellia
Played On 8/25/2012Lovely course in a very well manicured residential community.
This course is surrounded, in most part, by a relatively new residentilal community with a wide range of house designs. The lawns, front and back were very well maintained, as was the golf course. I could enjoy living and playing there.
