Tempest Golf Club
Played On 08/03/2023Will be back, but expecting it to be better
Played Tempest with a large group 7 times this past weekend as part of an annual golf tournament. There was a lot to love about Tempest, but there were some issues that we ran into that prospective players may want to be aware of.
The course layout and design is fantastic. Unfortunately, Texas is going through a terribly hot summer that has limited the possibility of maintaining a plush golf course. However, I think there are some bigger issues than the heat affecting Tempest. A majority of the fairways are bare and the underlying rock/top soil base is showing. This combined with sandy fairways makes for some difficult strikes with the golf club and brutal lies.
They were laying sod on #11 on Sunday the 6th, so hopefully they choose to do this for all of the rough patches because it is brutal to find the fairway and be rewarded with having to hit off rocks essentially. I would recommend to the golf course to not undertake such a big course improvement project on a Sunday which involved closing a golf hole, that is what a Monday/Tuesday are for.
The greens are in excellent condition except for #5. There is a large grey area that needs to be re-sodded. The greens roll very true and are extremely receptive to iron shots. While slow, I was very happy with the greens.
However, we were disappointed in the fact that all of the pins did not change from Saturday to Sunday. These greens are awesome with multiple slopes and undulations that have the ability to test one's golf game, yet we ended up playing to the same pin location on half the holes between Saturday and Sunday. That was unfortunate and hopefully this isn't a normal occurrence.
Speaking of #5, I don't think anyone could grow grass on the upslope leading to the fairway. Maybe save the effort and ditch the grass and put in dirt/red rocks and make it a forced carry to get onto the fairway where you can grow grass rather than leaving half the hole looking like a West Texas dirt field where grass is supposed to be, just commit to not trying to grow grass maybe. That fairway is the worst out of the 14.
It is a shame there aren't water jugs on the course. They keep a water jug in the clubhouse and give you ice for it but the whole back 9 doesn't pass the clubhouse to fill up. This is dangerous in the summer and very unfortunate. Hopefully this will be remedied as water jugs are typically a staple of every golf course, especially one of the quality of Tempest.
I like to think a lot of the aesthetic issues with the golf course can be blamed on the tragic summer heat, so hopefully this course will be back to being pristine very soon. With that said, right now, I do not believe it is worth the $89 they're asking to play it on a weekend, maybe more like $59-69, but the same can be said for the majority of courses in Texas this summer, as the heat has wrecked havoc on the grass.
The amenities and staff were top class. Such great people and very down to Earth and fun to talk to. From the cart guys to the restaurant staff to the pro shop, we were taken very good care of and hopefully we made them aware of that. We loved the experience.
We stayed in the 2 houses owned by Tempest behind the range and they were in excellent condition. Highly recommend staying there when you play.
I'm looking forward to getting back out there and seeing it back in tip-top shape.

Terrific course. Best public greens in the DFW. Some wonky holes into tough greens but course knowledge would help that. The cart girl was incredible. I’ll be back ASAP
Pine Dunes Resort and Golf Club
Played On 08/09/2019An Absolute Gem
We had a guys trip planned for a Ryder Cup style weekend and we picked Pine Dunes as the location for our first rendition of the guys trip, with the intention of picking a new place every year. We quickly changed our minds and have decided this will be where we come every year. We played 5 rounds over the weekend and never ran into any pace of play issues, the greens and fairways were in terrific shape, and the course is just downright fun to play. We had 8 people, next year we booked for 12 people and can't wait to continue growing the weekend. The staff and the layout are amazing, not too hard but it even gave our best golfers fits. Driving Range and putting green are spectacular. Choice between cabins and townhome type lodging. For a course that charges upwards of $100 a round, we played 5 rounds and stayed 2 nights for around $400, an absolute steal. The only issue that I can think of is that the sitting area outside of the clubhouse isn't lit up at night, it is very dark and makes it hard to hangout as a group after the golf is over. We are all so stoked to head back in August!
Tour 18 Houston
Played On 06/09/2019Bunch of Hacks- way too slow
First off, Tremendous course. Any golf lover will love this course. Pace of play seems to be a repetitive problem out there though. They have a very strict starter that won’t give keys until it is your tee time which is excellent, except they do not have a marshal. I would recommend having the pro shop handle the starting and using a loud speaker just to call the next group up, and having the starter become a marshal. This course is just too awesome to be plagued by pace of play issues. Maybe it’s because it was a Sunday afternoon but I got through 2 holes on the back before being stuck behind 3 foursomes on 12, I then decided to play the front again until it got dark. Overall, love the course and will certainly play again, I just hope there is a marshal next time keeping up with pace of play.
Thanks for your feedback, Ryder1313. We ho to see you again for another round soon. Thanks for playing!
