The Frog at the Georgian
Played On 06/25/2022Incredibly Disappointing
I am not sure who is leaving a 5-star review for this course, but 5-stars could not be further from the truth.
First, the course is not in good shape. The fairways are nice, but other than that: bad. The greens are torn to shreds by ball marks, the rough is basically dirt, the tee boxes are some of the worst I've ever played. And the bunkers are truly a tragedy. It is an absolute disgrace that a Fazio course is being treated this way by whoever owns the place. The round being $80 with tax is probably as ripped off as I have been in a while. This was no better/worse than a $30 municipal course.
Additionally, the staff was the singular worst golf staff I have met while playing this game for 20+ years. There were no range balls when we showed up (at 1:00pm on a saturday, mind you). I was hounded and rushed by the marshal on the 9th fairway, despite being 1:50 into my round. When I went to the clubhouse to verify that I was not behind pace, the pro shop staff seemed as if they'd rather get into a physical altercation with me rather than help solve my issue. On the 10th hole, the marshal again (literally) yelled at us for complaining to the golf staff. I am typically not one to complain, but I have never, ever seen a golf staff so poor at their jobs. Every single person I interacted with on this golf course was rude and unprofessional. Its actually an accomplishment that the management has managed to assemble a staff so incompetent; it would be hard to find folks more incompetent if you were trying.
I have never written a negative review of a golf course until now. If you value your time and money, you won't play here. They ruined our day - don't let them ruin yours.
Gaylord Springs Golf Links
Played On 06/24/2018Good Links Course
This is not what I would consider a typical links course, but it is definitely an interesting take on links.
Conditions: Almost as good as public golf gets. A few little bare spots in the rough, but 99% of the golf course is as green as possible. Greens were quick downhill, but grainy uphill, which made them a little slower than they appeared. Overall, really good conditions.
Layout: Interesting, to say the least. There are no trees, but the links lose their true links character by the over-abundance of gigantic mounding. The fairways are wide, but the mounding is dead area. It also lacks the ability to be creative; the golf course was designed for pure aerial attack. With that said, it is a great layout. Challenging on the front, rewarding on the back. Couple of truly unique holes. Overall 8.5/10
Hermitage Golf Course - The President's Reserve
Played On 06/23/2018One of the Best Public Courses I've played!
Course was in fantastic shape. Greens were quick but receptive. Fairways in tour-perfect condition, bunkers clean and raked, rough thick but not too penal.
Layout was refreshing. It felt like I was playing a resort course. Course wasn't overly long, even from the tips, and the course has a few great short-4s that require strategic play (with options) and wedge execution. Also, a fantastic set of Par 3 holes.
All in all, this is one of the best public courses I've played from a course condition perspective and from a layout perspective. 10/10.
Montgomery Bell State Park Golf Course
Played On 06/03/2018Underwhelming & Average
Maybe I expected a bit too much for a Tennessee State Park golf course, but at the time I played, this was the top reviewed course on GolfAdvisor for the Nashville area.
The course: bland, lifeless holes without much character or true design. Not particularly challenging. The conditions: average at best. Current rate near $46 is too high for the current conditions. Greens were abnormally slow
Staff was friendly and I am sure everyone working there is making the place as good as it can be, but the course is, for the most part, average.
That said, we saw plenty of wildlife (turkey, deer, etc.) and there were some pretty holes with nice views. But, I wouldn't say this is anywhere near the top course in the Nashville area, but rather, a course slightly better than the average municipal course.
Sugar Mountain Golf Club
Played On 05/12/2018Great Executive Course
As expected for the area, the course was in fantastic shape. Greens rolled true and moderately quick. Pace of play excellent and staff friendly.
Quirky layout being an executive course, but plenty of nice par 3's and 4's & an opportunity to hit 2 or 3 drivers. Plenty of great views. Worth a play, especially for a more casual round with friends/significant other.
Dolphin Head Golf Course
Played On 08/20/2017Good course.
Great conditions: lush fairways, thick right, greens rolled true and smooth (seemed fully healed from recent aeration). Good value.
Staff friendly but pace of play could have been a bit better. Will play again.
