Out and About

With the prolonged heat wave we have experienced I didn't fancy travelling too far for baked fairways and greens. Played Stanley park a lot, years ago when it was a municipal course but not been for a long time. What a fantastic surprise it was to see almost perfect GREEN lush greens. My playing partner said it was like walking on axminster they were so soft. The fairways were pretty much as I expected, baked and the bunkers were pretty much the same. I think there aren't many courses at the moment that aren't brown all over. Where it matters, on the greens, every hole was beautiful. Even the holes furthest away from the clubhouse. Not a difficult course and today we played for £11. Think I'l give it another bash next week just because of the quality of the greens in the current conditions..

Out and About

Been here many times but first time this year. Probably my favorite course and the conditions of the course didn't disappoint once again. Fairways, greens and bunkers in perfect condition. Everything was set perfect only for me to have my worst round of golf I can remember. I should of jumped on the back of one of the donkey sized hares and rode it back to my car. Everything was made worthwhile though when I spotted a kingfisher fishing in the pond beside the 16th fairway. Not an everyday sighting, well not for me. Only downside was I overheard a member complaining that non-members were being allowed to play whilst they were playing. You would have thought that by now the members of private golf clubs would have realised that societys and internet bookings keep there annual fees from spiralling out of control. Some people will never change eh. Couple of tips for anyone considering a game here, and your really should if you get the chance. The rough looks inconspicuous but is very dense. You won't always be able to get your second shot to the green. The greens are deceptively firm also. Lush green to look at but a devil to land and keep your ball on the green. I try and land it on the apron and let it run on. The better golfers will be able to spin and hold but thats not me. Book a round here, you won't be dissappointed.

A local course but not somewhere we had been before. I read the previous reviews before going so was a little apprehensive about the fairways. The fairways were in very good condition I thought but that was the best part of the course. Greens had been scarified recently which I find very late in the year to be done. I would normally expect it around the end of April beginning of May. Even accounting for this factor, the greens were in very poor condition. Dry, bobbly, uneven and random holes on almost every green. Not un-repaired pitch marks either. I didn't find a bunker today so can't comment on the quality of those. It is a fairly new course and it is a bit featureless but you would expect that given the location of where they have built the course. Basically I assume it is reclaimed farmland. I paid £16 today and wouldn't want to pay anymore than that. I doubt I will be back. The Clubhouse is lovely and the staff friendly, but I think that recent expenses have been spent on other things rather than the course.

One more thing I forgot to add and you would think it a basic requirement for all courses. Very few distance markers around the course. The ones they do have are in terrible spots so second shots are all down to judgement.

Out and About

Tried to get to a few new courses last year to vary things up. Really enjoyed the change so first off the block this year was Ashton and Lea. Very easy to find and for an affordable price for a Saturday. Sunny but fairly windy for our first visit. Wouldn't of been an issue except the course starts with the 1st 9 circling the boundary of the course. Out of bounds on the right on every hole and with my unpredictable fade, got caught out twice. The first hole sets the tone and is a beautiful looking hole. The whole course is very picturesque and very well maintained. Reminded me of Lytham Green Drive a lot, a course I enjoy playing too. Small hills but no need to be a mountain goat to get round. Fairways are not flat though and humps and hollows on each fairway add to the challenge. Greens were very quick and plenty of borrows to read so 2 putts are not guaranteed. Very enjoyable course and will be visiting again soon.Old school rules so be aware before you visit. Tailored shorts, T shirts tucked in, hats off in the bar.

first time visitor

Another course visited for the first time this year. Beautiful course and a real hidden gem. Immaculately maintained with plenty of holes which aren't your everyday straight up and down. Hilly but manageable for everyone I think. The view from the 19th is well worth a shandy afterwards. I have visited a few courses in the area this year as I am travelling a little way from home to see what is out there. This rates way up there and I will definitely be coming back. Do yourself a favour and have a day out whilst the weather is good.

Played it last year as part of our tour of different courses. Not a bad course but is probably caught between a rock and a hard place. It is in an area where there are many very good quality golf courses. These are now available at reasonable prices and are in significantly better condition. I wouldn't have paid more than the £12 hot deal price. It has interesting holes but you can tell that the upkeep isn't of the quality you would expect on a good course. It also has a foot golf course on the actual golf course which probably shows that the owners are trying to cover the costs of the course any way they can. Clubhouse is part of the hotel so is very nice. Probably needs to accept that it can't compete with the neighboring courses and maybe price it accordingly to attract the numbers. £10 to £14 as a regular tee fee would be about right and you would then get what you pay for. For that price you would go when you fancy 9-12-15 holes after work but don't want to pay the world for it. I enjoyed the change of course but won't be rushing back. Sorry.
