Played On 07/05/2019Decent South Jersey course
Course was in good shape. Pace of play was a little slow, but that wasn't the fault of the rangers,. They were out trying to push where they could. Just the nature of the course I think because of the design. A fairly good number of holes that play back into each other which can slow things down and there are a few holes on the back where tee shots can easily stray onto the tee boxes of other holes making "FORE!" a commonly heard phrase. A couple things that effected the experience of the round were that they have no beverage cart on the course and it was a very hot, humid day and there were water stations on the course that were empty. Other than that, a decent course for a decent price.

Layout of the course is very interesting and given the openness of the course, wind can definitely be a factor as it was during our round. Fairways and tee boxes in great shape. Greens roll fast and true. My only complaint, and the only reason I gave 4 stars vs 5 stars, is with the bunkers. Bunkers are loaded with stones, some as large is 1-2 inches in diameter. Not sure if the intention is to match the type of soil that is in the area or what and I'm willing to take my medicine if I end up in one, but I don't think I should risk damage to my sand wedge in the process. Other than that, course is great, staff is very friendly and the pace of play was good.

I really do enjoy this course. I've played here perhaps 8 times over the years since the course opened in 1999. In fact, I shot my lowest score on this course so it holds a special place for me. I enjoy the layout. I enjoy that it hasn't been encroached upon by housing developments. And the food/drink carts are readily available. The primary reason that I didn't provide at least 4 stars was the general condition of the course. The traps have a significant number of rocks in them, some of fairly reasonable size. The fairways can be clumpy with weeds. The greens themselves are in good shape even this early in the season, but the areas around the greens, including the fringes, often have bare patches which can make chipping and putting challenging.
Back in the early 00's this course was in incredible shape and they charged a fee that was commensurate with that experience. Likewise, today the conditions are not what they were and the fee is lower so from a "value for the money" perspective, I still feel it's a good value, but I'd much rather see the conditions improved if that meant a slightly higher fee. The two biggest improvements I'd love to see would be to screen the rocks out of the bunkers and the bare spots filled in around the greens.
I still recommend this course because of the enjoyable layout and because of the value.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. Thank you for the 4 stars! We aim for a 5-star experience, so we always welcome feedback for improvement. Thank you for playing Westwood Golf Club.
