Chapel Hill Country Club
Played On 11/07/2016Orange County's only private club
Chapel Hill Country Club, founded in 1922 a couple of miles away as a nine-hole course, is an upscale private club with a course appropriate to that status. Staff and amenities are top notch as is maintenance of the course. Holes 10, 11, 12, and 18 offer lots of water - comparable to a beach resort course. Tough but fair course from the back tees. Lots of road crossings and nearby traffic. Not quite as good a design as Fazio's Finley Golf Course across NC 54, Chapel Hill CC is more than worth playing whenever you are invited. Subject to drainage problems after heavy rains.
Occoneechee Golf Club
Played On 11/06/2016enjoyable unpretentious popular course
An enjoyable, unpretentious course, Occoneechee has stepped up its game in recent years and become one of the most popular courses open to the public serving Durham and Chapel Hill. Excellent course maintenance, good staff, challenging greens, and a terrific men's golf association have been game changers. Those factors more than compensate for an inconsistent design that mixes mostly fair and straightforward American woodland holes with a couple of dubious ones (4, 11). Located between US 70 and US 70 Business, traffic noise can be distracting on 4, 5, 9, 11, 12, 13.
Cedar Grove Golf Course

After almost 40 years in operation, Cedar Grove GC closed following the death of its owner eliminating the only course in northern Orange County,
Shamrock Golf Club
Played On 09/04/2016Good enough
Shamrock has been around a long time and continues to get a good amount of play with weekends crowded during good weather. Almost everything about Shamrock is unexceptional but good enough which makes it a pretty good value. Its design reflects the uninspired 1950s. When our tee time came up a few minutes late, we discovered we were playing behind an 8-some on a summer Sunday morning!! The ranger broke them up after a couple of holes. Next time I saw the ranger he stopped me and told me to take down the windshield on my cart so that I would be cooler!?!
Walnut Wood Golf Course
Played On 08/14/2016odd layout poorly maintained
Walnut Wood is inexpensive and run by lovely folks. In recent years, however, its maintenance has plunged to little more than mowing. It is a sad but too common example of a rural course struggling in today's golf economy where the reduced traffic means its modest fees cannot sustain it. We played on a summer Sunday and there were only about a dozen other players. Some of the holes, especially number one with its blind shot over a large lake with no chance to recover from a short or innacuarate drive, make little sense.
Quaker Creek Golf Course
Played On 08/07/2016Defines average
Located way out in the country, Quaker Creek is an OK place to play without anything to distinguish it nor anything really bad either.
Sourwood Forest Golf Course
Played On 11/07/2015pretty good design way out in the country
For an rural course, Sourwood offers a good design with varied types and difficulty of holes including one very challenging par-four, lots of creeks and ponds, a blind dogleg, and good par three holes. Unfortunately, the course, which is way out in the country, has suffered from from frequent management changes and lack of capital to maintain the course adequately. The photo with this page is absolutely NOT from Sourwood, at least this Sourwood which has no brick or multistory buildings. The course might not be in operation after May 2016.
