Devils Head Resort & Convention Center - Prairie Glen Course
Played On 08/31/2022Dreadful course
I happened to be staying in the region and booked a morning tee time on their Glacier course, they have two courses the other being the prairie. I can’t begin to tell you how atrocious this course was. Most of the bunkers are literal disaster zones, as are many of the greens. The fairways are average and I’ll defined at best and most of the tee boxes are caked in mud. There are many blind tee shots but zero directional markers, yardage markers are inconsistent and the golf carts in a dilapidated state. My cart’s tires were so threadbare my cart had no forward traction on hills. I would therefore have to roll backwards and get back to the rutted cart path. No clubhouse just a small shack selling a few beers and soft drinks. Apparently there is a pro shop and restaurant but it’s nowhere near the course or first tees or cart pickup. The distance from the 4th green to the 5th tee is about half a mile and I’m not exaggerating, if you were walking you would need to catch a bus. I got lost missing the direction sign that was laying horizontal in a bush. All of this is bad enough but the worst is they charge $69 for this experience, the course isn’t worth $19. I have contacted the club asking for a refund or at least a partial one and they haven’t even had the curtesy of a response. Needless to say I recommend avoiding this course.
Blackstone Golf Club
Played On 10/03/2018Worth a visit
Played this course in extremely windy conditions (steady wind of 27mph, gusts close to 40mph) which made scoring very difficult. Regardless, having played this course twice now I rank it up there with the very best in the Chicago region. Excellent layout, every hole is diffirent, not particularly long which means you can score on it providing you use manage your shots. Lovely 18th hole that leads up to a lovely clubhouse that has a great outdoor patio overlooking the green. If this course wasn't so far away I would play it on a regular basis.
Tanna Farms Golf Club
Played On 09/12/2018If you like house lined fairways rather than tree lined, then this is the course for you. The course pretty much winds around a housing development, I found the course had a very strange setup, par 34 on the front with 4 par three's and a par 37 on the back with 3 lengthy par five's. That coupled with the very slow pace of play made it difficult to get into any kind of rhythm. On a positive note the course was in generally good condition and the staff friendly and helpful
Settler's Hill Golf Course
Played On 08/29/2018A good test of golf
Played the day after a very heavy storm had hit the area, so the fairways were holding a lot of water, which meant carts only on the path. Played the course from the blue tees and given the humid conditions and wet fairways it played all its length and then some. What I particularly like about this course are the variations of holes and the elevation changes which makes for a very enjoyable round. One particular feature of this course are the par 5's, all of which are very challenging off the blue tees.
Turnberry Country Club
Played On 08/14/2017A pleasant surprise
Thoroughly enjoyed my round here, played off the back tees at a length of almost 6,900 yards. The par three's were particularly tough from the back. Very tricky greens and you will be hard pressed to find a flat putt anywhere during the round. Has a real country club feel which isn't surprising since it is a country club that has begun accepting a few fee based rounds. I get the impression the course fell on some hard times as its condition has likely deteriorated somewhat. The sand in the traps was very course and there were some areas of the course that had suffered probably from the recent floods. However all in all an enjoyable round.
St. Andrews Golf & Country Club - St. Andrews Course
Played On 07/11/2017Nice Facility
Played from the blue tees which play almost 7,000 yards. At that distance you use pretty much every club in the bag. Lots of long par 4's 400 yards plus including three in a row to finish. I didn't find the layout particularly interesting but the greens certainly are, big undulating greens and in very good condition, putts tracked very well on them. My only real complaint was the fact that at the clubhouse they appear to have a snack shack where you might pick up a simple hotdog and soda but it wasn't open. They have a very nice restaurant and bar area however and a well equipped snack shack at the turn. Overall a pleasant round of golf and will play it again.
Lake Bluff Golf Club
Played On 07/30/2015Superb Condition
My first time playing this course but definitely not my last. The course was in impeccable condition, beautiful lush closely cut fairways, greens that were true and fast and great tee boxes. Preferred the back nine to the front nine especially the closing 5 or 6 holes. I made a point to compliment the staff in the pro shop before leaving.
Hi Peter,
The Tee Side Grill out front is used mainly for Wednesday Nights Live on the Lawn. You can always order a simple hotdog & drink (to go, from the bartender) inside at J.J.'s Bar & Grill. Thanks for your feedback!
