Cherokee Run Golf Club
Played On 08/22/2017Arnold Palmer design in great shape
One of the best courses in the Atlanta area is in its best condition ever. A must play.
Heritage Golf Links - Legacy Nine
Played On 11/25/2014Sneaky long. Tough greens.
The course measures 6800 yards from the tips, 6400 yards from the middle and less than 6000 yards from the white tees but plays longer with forced carries from the tees and to the well guarded, undulated and fast greens. Room to drive the ball. The real fun begins with the approach shots and only gets better at the greens. Two very long, tough par 3's. Busy course.
Mountain View at Callaway Gardens Resort
Played On 11/29/2013Classic design with room to drive the ball and smallish greens guarded by bunkers.
Classic design and old school customer service that made golf so popular. I wish we'd scheduled an earlier tee time so we could've played 36 holes. (We were able to squeeze in a 3rd nine - still didn't score worth a hoot.) Tree lined, lots of bunkers and pretty past greens. Fun, fun, fun, and sneaky difficult to score. The rough is probably a bear in the spring and summer. We'll be back.
Crystal Falls Golf Club
Played On 09/29/2013A thinking golfer's golf course cut through the North GA hills.
Unlimited range balls are available at an extra cost. Front, middle and back yardages are on all the sprinkler heads but a range finder is recommended to better assist you with charting your shots around the trouble. The course is uniquely designed to allow multiple options as to how to play a given hole or shot, thus suited for many different styles and levels of play exclusive of the truely novice or beginner golfer. All four par threes are gimmies, probably to make up for the difficulties of some of the other holes. There's a good mix of long, middle and short holes with hills, trees, bunkers and lateral and water hazards abound. You'll have many risk/reward opportunities. Choose the right ones, play to your strengths and you should score well. Regardless of the outcome one thing is for certain, you'll be glad you chose this course to play
SouthWood Golf Club
Played On 09/27/2013Nice greens, lots of bunkers, some strategically placed trees and virtually no place to lose a golf ball.
$5 gets you unlimited balls at the practice range. It's a good idea to bring a GPS or range finder to save time looking for the yardage markers. The course is open to the wind and uses bunkers and strategically placed trees to shape the holes. The best feature of the course is its large contoured greens. Several tee choices ranging from 7000+ yards from the tips down to less than 3000 yards from the front tees means golfers at any skill level can play this course.
Butternut Creek Golf Course
Played On 09/22/2013Great greens and lots of hills.
Nice pro shop. The grille was closed. No practice range. Nice practice green. The carts have GPS and the score card provides diagrams of the holes with playing tips. Play is mostly straight up and down the "two club difference" hills with strategically placed creeks and ponds, so pay attention to your GPS and score card diagrams with distances to the hazards. Many of the fairways are tree lined but are pretty wide with very little rough, so the course is pretty forgiving (unless you really spray your shots), and plays on the easy side of moderate in difficulty, with the exception of number 11 that requires either a great drive and a very good approach shot, or great care not to find the pond guarding the green. (I found the pond) The best feature of the course is the well maintained small to medium sized greens that are soft and receptive, smooth and reasonably quick, sometimes undulated and tilted but most very accessible to up and downs, a pleasure to putt, and the reason for the four star rating.
Eagle's Brooke Golf and Country Club
Played On 09/18/2013One of the best championship layouts near the greater metro Atlanta area where you'll see more wild life than houses.
One of the best championship layouts near the greater metro Atlanta area where you'll see more wild life than houses. The new owners have made progress in addressing the course condition issues that resulted from financial challenges of the previous owners. Currently they're operating out of a modular pro shop but have plans to add a clubhouse. There is a practice range and a large putting green. Word is out about the better conditions so there are more golfers than before but the course is large and spread out and tree lined, so it can accommodate a lot of golfers without adversely impacting the pace of play or your golfing experience. I expect over time it will gain in popularity and the condition of the course will improve to warrant a 5 star rating. This is a must play and well worth the drive.
Crystal Lake Golf & Country Club
Played On 08/02/2013Private club caliber layout and amenities open to the public
Full service pro shop. Clubhouse lounge with bar and full menu. Practice range and putting green. Superior layout that measures 7200 yards from the tips down to 6000 yards from the white tees with two other tee options in between. Tree lined, bunker and hazard accented holes require strategy and accurate shot placement. A very good risk-reward layout that's fair and fun to play. The bent grass greens struggle in the summer heat but the grounds keeping crew does a good job keeping them playable.
Apple Mountain Resort
Played On 06/23/2013A really well maintained straight forward golf course built over rolling hills with wide fairways and accessible greens.
A really nice pro shop and practice area highlight this golf facility of a county leisure style resort seemingly nowhere near anywhere. A straight forward design over north Georgia rolling hills with wide fairways, accessible greens, little rough, several bunkers, large mature trees and no real water hazards. The front nine is the shorter and easier of the two nines and starts with a reachable par five and ends with a reachable par four. The back nine has three long par fours and the par three #15 has two sets of blue (back) tees from which to play. The front is approximately 139 yards as shown on the score card with the back measuring approximately 175 yards to an elevated green. The course is really well maintained but probably doesn't offer enough of a challenge for the more advanced golfer looking for a solid test of golf.
Barefoot Resort & Golf - Love Course
Played On 06/19/2013A golf complex designed and operated to provide an incredible golf experience.
An impressive facility with a plethora of amenities and unsurpassed service that make for a very special golf experience. Wednesdays are discount days for all four courses at the Barefoot Resort. Complimentary range balls with shuttle service to a practice facility that includes its own clubhouse facilities. The Love course offers a variety of challenges without being punitive including a reachable par four that is no risk and all reward. This is a course that will appeal to golfers at all levels.
Myrtle Beach National Golf Club - King's North Course
Played On 06/18/2013The best course we played for the week.
I booked my vacation golf tee times via Golf Now and got great prices, including MBN - Kings North. A great layout with lots of water, waste bunkers, "Cousin It" grass, a few risk/reward designed holes and challenging greens with no shortages of ridges and undulations. This course was an absolute blast to play! I will play this course each and every time I find myself any where near Myrtle Beach.
Grande Dunes Resort Club
Played On 06/17/2013Free range balls, nice practice area, great people and a solid course layout that's both fun and challenging.
Free range balls, nice practice area, great people and a solid course layout that's both fun and challenging. Come early and get in some good practice before your round. This course sits up above and along an inland waterway so wind direction and speed come into play. The course offers some nominal elevation changes and a welcomed relief from the pancake flat terrain of the other courses we played in the Myrtle Beach area.
The Creek At Hard Labor State Park
Played On 06/12/2013Challenging and fun, fun, fun!
Great layout with lots of trees, hills and mother nature abound. Played 36 holes in 6 hours. Would've played more if daylight would've allowed. Back tees are less than 6700 yards but sufficient to afford some very long and challenging par fours. Way out in the boonies but worth the drive. This is a must play at least a few times a year. Decent practice range and putting green.
The Georgia Club - Chancellors Red/Black Course
Played On 05/17/2013Full facility private country club with 27 well designed and maintained holes.
Top notch 27 hole facility that's always well maintained and offers all the amenities expected of a private country club. All three nines offer challenging but fair layouts consisting of rolling hills, tree lined fairways, bunker guarded landing areas and greens, white sand traps, lateral and water hazards and true greens. The only thing better than playing 18 @ The Georgia Club would be playing all 27 holes in one day.
The Trophy Club of Apalachee
Played On 05/09/2013The best greens I've played all year! A really fun test of golf.
Rolling hills with elevated tees and greens, tree lined holes, tightly cut fairways, modest rough, well placed bunkers, a few hazards and the best greens I've played all year made for a very enjoyable golfing experience. The course is challenging but is not brutally long, has a few tees from which to choose that make a real difference in the way the course plays, and a fair minded design that lends itself to many different styles of play. Add the clubhouse with proshop, putting green and practice range and Trophy Club of Apalachee is the complete package. This is a course I plan to play many more times.
Monroe Golf & Country Club
Played On 05/03/2013An old school golf club with rolling hills, large trees and unlimited range balls.
An old school private club turned semi-private with a full service clubhouse and pro shop, practice green, unlimited range balls and great people to make you feel right at home. The greens were recently aerated and top dressed the day we played the course. Otherwise, the course was well maintained and I suspect the greens will be sneaky fast and challenging soon enough and the course will rate four stars. The course was built over rolling hills with fairways lined and separated by large mature trees but with plenty of room to spray, find and play your ball. The greens have bunkers around them but are very receptive with room to miss and still be able to get up and down. The course layout is very player friendly and fun to play. We were already talking about a return trip when the greens are 100% before we even finished our round.
Providence Club
Played On 05/01/2013A very propular course for many good reasons.
Full service clubhouse, pro shop, putting and chipping greens and practice range. Rolling hills, tree lined holes with room to play, plenty of sand and water to try to avoid, and undulated greens combine to offer a very fun test of golf.
Pine Hills Country Club
Played On 04/20/2013A decent layout over S GA topography (flat) with lots of trees, water & sand that is very golfer friendly.
Almost all the holes allow for generous landing areas off the tee. The obvious exceptions are the par 4 #6 that is a dogleg right with two forced carries (a great hole!), and the par 5 #12 that begs for a cut shot from the back tee to get past the trees on the right and find the fairway that's guarded by a large lake on its left. (Not much room for error) There are lots of pine trees but not really any hills as is typical for S GA. There are several holes with water hazards, most of the holes are tree lined and most greens are guarded by bunkers but with a few exceptions, you have plenty of room to avoid the trouble. It is a pretty forgiving course. Almost all the greens were sanded because of what appeared to be a loss of grass and it appeared the back 2/3 of #11's green was being replaced. However, the greens rolled well enough, and they'd posted a sign at the clubhouse about repairs to the greens taking place. So, maybe the problem is seasonal and the issues with the greens will soon be resolved. It was a very enjoyable round of golf.
Country Club of Gwinnett
Played On 04/18/2013A short course that rewards strategic play and the long ball on the par 5's.
A mostly tree lined short course with hills, dog legs, creeks and water hazards that requires a fair amount of strategy. Placement of your shots is more important than distance on most but not all holes. The par 5's are reachable in 2 for many players. The condition of the course is OK but could be better. The bunkers are many and well maintained. The facility offers a putting green & practice range. The clubhouse offers a pro shop and dining area with fully stocked bar.
Reunion Country Club
Played On 04/12/2013Private club experience.
Full service pro shop and clubhouse. Practice range, putting green and chipping green with a sand trap. Hilly terrain provides for many elevated tees and greens and several ravines to avoid. Liberal drop areas at the par threes and red lateral hazard stakes along the left and right sides of most holes take the sting out of errant shots while speeding up play. (I wish they'd toughen up the drop areas) Yardages are well marked. A GPS or laser will help with navigating around the hazards. Large greens with ridges and slopes make for interesting pin locations that call for special attention. A solid layout/design that allows for multiple styles of play. One of the best tracks in Metro Atlanta. I'll definitely be back to try my luck again.
