Pace of Play Answers

Well, I figured out why pace of play is so slow. Played here again after vowing not to return from earlier this year where we had a 5+ hour round. The course is running 9 minutes between tee times. I know many of us have been complaining about the lack of rangers. But you can have all the rangers you want, and it won’t matter if you are stacking the course on weekends with 9 minute intervals between tee times. To management, just make it 10-11 minutes, and so what, you lose maybe 1 4some for the day? But you get people like me coming back because we can get home. And not be 3 deep waiting on the 10th hole.

Not Worth the Money

Played another 5+ hour round here. Not sure why we keep going back, but this might be it for us. For the amount the course charges, you simply cannot have 5 hour rounds be a consistent phenomenon. There were no rangers at all on the course to enforce play, and even though several groups including ourselves called into the clubhouse to ask for a ranger to be sent out, none did. It's possible one group was causing the massive backup, and it might have been as easy as having this one group skip a hole. Instead you left multiple 4somes on the course as it got pitch black.

The course itself is fun and challenging. But it doesn't help that there are multiple holes that were cart path only. This is one of the only courses that has this many cart path only holes for reasons that don't make sense.

The course needs to bring it's pricing down by $20-30 to better justify the experience.

Oh Red Tail. Where Have You Gone?

Have been playing Red Tail for over 12 years, and it's always been a great go-to destination for great golf. The layout is fun and challenging, with great views. And it's usually in great condition. But this year has been awful. The fairways have open patches all over...not sure if this is drought or some disease, but it's not worthy of a $100+ course. But worse, the tee boxes are terrible. Beer cans and litter are all over the course near the tee boxes. And why hasn't the grass range been open all year? So many other nearby courses are in much better shape and cheaper. Red Tail, you need to severely lower your prices. Just hoping you don't head down the path of Stow Acres into irrelevance.

Great Layout, Poor Green Conditions

Have been playing here a bunch last few years. Great layout and walkable course. Love the mix of par 3s and 5s, and the change from the front to the back.

My main issue is that the greens have been getting progressively worse through the last few months, to the point that the greens are not acceptable for this level of course. The fairways and rough are great. But the greens have been really beat up, and have been playing unbearably slow recently. If the course is reading this, please have the greens play at a pace that the price of this course justifies.

Never Again

How many reviews have been written about how great this course was 25 years ago, and how far it has gone down. Well, here's another one. People I play with can't believe that Stow Acres was once one of the best public courses in the Boston area. Now it's one of the worst. Played the North Course yesterday. The layout itself remains solid. But the conditions were bad...fairways patchy, tee boxes in terrible shape, many bunkers had no sand. Unclear when the greens were mowed as they ran as fast as the fairways at Red Tail/Pine Hills. But the worst part was the management. There was an outing on the South Course yesterday. So what does management do? They jam as many people as possible onto the North Course. And to make it worse, they let out multiple 2somes through the day, making it play even longer. We waited EVERY SINGLE HOLE, sometimes 2 groups on the tee. 5:15 hour round. And never saw a ranger the entire time. I get it...the season is almost over and let's maximize revenues. Just let anyone who shows up onto the course vs. turning away dollars. Why not tell people who don't have tee times that the course is full? You're already making money running a charity tournament on the South Course (which, btw, why in the world close down the course on a Sunday??). They had the nerve to tell me they were running 9 minute intervals between groups. That's a lie. What idiots. I tell myself every year to not return. This time I won't. Just for letting a bunch of people onto the North Course yesterday, you've lost 4 of us forever. Nice job.

Thank you for reviewing the course. We apologize for the conditions and delay of play during your round. This is by no means the standard we strive to achieve. With an uncharacteristically full day, we work hard to accommodate everyone who visits our course and allow our guest the chance to complete their rounds. With that in mind, we are working to best control pace and allow everyone to finish in a reasonable amount of time. We will continue to look for ways to improve. We are glad to see you rated the course conditions and layout to be great during your game. Thank you for playing Stow North at Stow Acres Country Club. We hope to see you again soon.

To management at Stow. Your canned response says absolutely nothing. You've given the same response to almost every criticism below. I could have criticized the ball washers and you would have said the same thing. To regain credibility, you need to be more specific on addressing these issues, and exactly what you are doing to fix it. When will conditions improve and how? How will you address pace of play?
