Omni La Costa Resort & Spa - Legends Course
Played On 05/15/2021Somewhat tired like the surroundings
Southern California suffers from a lack of quality golf courses for the amount of people who live there. Which is why you go to a place like La Costa in order to play a nice track when you can't get on Torrey Pines. Overall I thought it was a mediocre experience. Not bad, mind you, but nothing outstanding. The course is in fine shape, albeit the greens are recovering from a punching, but there's nothing really outstanding about the place. The routing is adequate but, like the surrounding villas and apartments which are showing their age, the course struck me as dated and in need of something to make it greater than the generally flat track with numerous hazards which are more distractions for the eyes as they rarely come into play for most golfers under a 13 handicap. GPS on the cart failed and it had to be replaced at the turn. Otherwise the staff was good, the starter was a pleasure, and the pace of play, despite the group of hackers in front of us, turned out to be adequate as we finished what should have been a 3.5 hour round in 4 hours. Again, the choices in this area are limited but for $145 this was, unfortunately, an average round of golf.
The Golf Club At Fossil Creek
Played On 03/28/2021Needs some TLC but still a great layout
I play Fossil Creek a few times every year and it is still one of my favorites in the DFW area due to the variety of holes, the challenge of the creeks and lakes which run through the course, the need to shape shots in every direction, and the mixture of short and long holes that require more than just bomb and gouge. Since we're just coming out of winter the course conditions are less than ideal with some greens showing small to large repair areas, the bunkers being marginal at best, tee boxes being marginal, and the fairways needing more grass but you can't get what you can't grow until summer. One of the few times I've played here in a north wind and it was a completely different experience but a good challenge. Worth the play in my opinion just because there's so much that is natural about this course instead of the bulldozed, manufactured tracts that inhabit much of DFW.
Oyster Reef Golf Course
Played On 11/26/2020Very enjoyable course
While others have mentioned that other than the par 3 which overlooks the sound that this is not the most attractive course this turned out to be one of my favorite rounds on the island. I enjoy the way the trees define the shape of the holes and the challenge of working the ball both ways. True, as others have stated, the greens were slow but generally rolled true once you got used to the speed. Conditioning was good overall. The price is higher than some of the other publics on the island but that probably ensures that pace of play is not an issue as we got around in well under 4 hours despite having to continuously search for balls for one player who hadn't golfed in 2 years. Easily better than Shipyard and I probably enjoyed it better than Port Royal as while there's some water on the course it wasn't a major factor on most holes. Will be back.
Rose Hill Golf Club
Played On 11/21/2020Supposedly improving
Played with some members who described the course conditions a few years back and based on that you can sense that there has been improvement over time. Still, more work needs to be done, particularly on the tee boxes and some of the fairways. Greens were generally good, albeit slow, but in adequate shape. The variety of the holes is nothing special but varied enough to be a challenge. Huge gators on a few holes on the back and overall, despite the numbers of people playing, the afternoon pace of play was quite good.
Thank you so much for leaving us with your feedback. We value our customer experience, so your review is important to us. We will make note and we hope to see you back at Rose Hill Golf Club!
Galleon/Brigantine at Shipyard Golf Club
Played On 11/20/2020Typical Hilton Head course that will improve
This is an average course for Hilton Head which still makes it better than most daily fee public courses anywhere else. Still, it is very typical Hilton Head where some holes are mostly tree lined where others have water, some bend while others are straight, and the greens fees are higher than you'd expect. Downsides are that the bunkers are being re-done and are GUR at present and that it's, per the clubhouse staff, the busiest public on the island so play can slow during peak times. There's others in the Heritage portfolio of courses that I prefer such as Oyster Reef or one or both of the Port Royal courses but it's still an enjoyable day particularly if it's great late November weather.
There's only so much room on the island, so the majority of course tend to be narrow tree lined hole that wander through developments. Our bunker project is nearing completion and the course will be much better for it, as for comparing us to our sister courses we do cater more to the resort style golfer. We're happy you enjoyed your day otherwise!
Coyote Ridge Golf Club
Played On 07/20/2014OK
As noted in other reviews, the greens are having some conditioning issues. Quite hairy at present, bumpy at times, and discolored. Fairways are also hairy with little roll. Bunkers were, as with many public courses, extremely inconsistent with some being packed done and others having ridges and valleys that catch the ball and make escape more difficult than it should be. First time played and the back 9 seems to be a case of trying to put 9 holes onto not enough land as while the elevation changes were great, the combination of long par 3's and short par 4's was unappealing after a while. Front gets the noise from the nearby highways and back gets a view of the landfill. Again, the course may grow on me with repeated playings as course knowledge greatly increases the choice off the tee for many holes but I'm not rushing back anytime soon. Staff was great, practice area was good and the facilities were nice but the course has its limitations.
Tradition Golf Club at Oak Lane
Played On 07/13/2014Nice Course
Can tell that this course has been around for a while as it has uphill par 3's, which are not being built on modern courses, apparently. Nice use of the elevation changes. Course was in good shape. Some tee boxes need work but the greens were great and rolled true, although they should give out a free green repair tool so players take the hint. Only downside were the bunkers which were either full of footprints or pretty packed and the quality of the sand would both keep the footprints intact and also bounce a wedge if you're on a flat spot. Eventually just played the sand shots as chips after I got tired of watching the shot go 10 yards past the target. Still, a fun course, nice design, plenty of length but still numerous holes you have to learn the proper landing spots when you couldn't pull out the driver. Having a few rounds under your belt at this course can save you some serious strokes.
Brattleboro Country Club
Played On 07/12/2014Greens are gone
The website warns about the greens being damaged but it does not do justice to the extent of the damage. They are not playable at present as the amount of grass on each green is probably 20% or less. Despite this the staff in the pro shop would not let me out anytime earlier than my appointed golf now hot deal time without extorting an additional $20 cart fee for the privilege of playing their winter destroyed course. Great layout, nice elevation changes, but no fun to be had until the greens recover.
Country View Golf Club
Played On 07/12/2014Great greens
This is a typical muni, perhaps above average thanks to the back 9. The tees are pathetic and talking with one of the workers he said they are trying their best to bring them up to speed. The bunkers are also poor as they are rock hard and need to be played as a chip shot since you'll bounce your wedge trying to take any "sand". Fairways are ok but the greens here are what make this course. Hard yet accepting of shots, roll true, and the members generally fix their ball marks so you really have a shot when you get to the green. The front 9 is pretty pedestrian and the back is much more enjoyable as it has elevation changes and a nice mix of holes. Truly the meat of the course.
Thank you very much for your review as we do appreciate it. hope to see you back again soon!
