Fun Links in Florida close to Disney

I played here on a trip to Disney with my wife. So getting out early was important as I wanted to play at a reasonable pace in order to get back to Disney Springs for the day. Let's say I was more than lucky in terms of pace of play. The starter was great and asked if I want to go by myself or with the twosome behind me. Since they weren't split tee I chose to play on my own and finished the entire round in 2.5 hours!!!

I played quick but the fairness of the golf course's layout was helpful with the pace but it was still challenging. There is trouble of the tee but the fairways are wide and inviting. Other than maybe two holes you really have to miss poorly to be in trouble off the tee. It was a windy overcast day so with it being a links style have to account for that most of the round. Greens were in perfect shape not super fast but they were firm and rolled out well.

The course is very picturesque and plenty of wildlife to see throughout the round. My favorite two holes on the course are probably the Par 5 18th coming down the fairway looking at the Omni is very cool look. And the other is the 12th Hole which is a drive-able par 4 if you are willing to be aggressive and cut the corner on the left side.

Aside from a fast pace and that I played well the final reason I loved this course was the service. As you enter a valet service takes both your car and you golf bag. The staff from the bag drop to the pro shop to the starters are extremely friendly and hospitable. It was also worth the money from the conditions, the layout and the staff.

I will definitely be back!

The Hidden Gem of New Kent

Traveled to the Richmond area for a wedding and found this place a few weeks prior on this site. Based on the layout and the price I figured it was worth a shot and it did not disappoint.

For starters, when we arrive the Head Pro was there and extremely friendly and outgoing. We spoke with a few members on the practice area and they mentioned that the course was in the best shape they have ever seen and they didn't lie.

The greens were in perfect shape and rolling quick and true. The layout consists of doglegs and various blind shots so I suggest using a phone app or buying a yardage book. Additionally, the course played long from the 6700 yard tees as it was windy and there are various elevation changes.

The course was not very busy so we played in about 4 hours but we took our time if we hustled probably could have finished in 3.5. They are in the process of building a nice clubhouse so there was not a ton to offer amenities wise but the new building looks like it will be a great addition. There is also a winery next to the course so if you are in the area with others that don't play golf send them there and meet them afterwards.

Overall, this place was well worth the trip and the 38$ price on golf now made it even better. I highly suggest this hidden gem. I will be back in the near future.

The Dye Mind Game

Pete Dye's mastery for mind games is on full display here. The opening three holes ease you into your round but present previews of the challenging angles to come. The only hole in this layout I real felt was unfair is the Par 3 17th hole as the overgrown marsh in front blocks a fair view of the small green complex and the trouble located next to the green is a but much for a longer par 3 with a small green. Aside from that the layout challenges you to take on trouble and blindshots like any Dye course does.
From a course conditions side the course was in good shape considering it is the summer off season here and the winterkill issues at this point in the recovery process were minimal. Greens were very receptive and not in perfect shape but definitely good to play on.
Value and Pace of play: We were a foursome of 2 adults and 2 juniors. Barefoot has afternoon discounts that are totally worth it if you can stand the heat. We paid 58$ after 12pm and our two juniors were free since there were two paying adults in the afternoon. There was not a ton of play on teh course so we played in about 4 hours which is great for a tough layout with juniors.
Staff: Was super accomadating and friendly from the start. We didn't use the the resturant and bar except to buy drinks at the turn but we were treated well by the staff there as well

13 Holes due to Rain but still worth it

So we only got through 13 holes before thunderstorms ended our day but the 13 holes were just perfect. I try to play here at least once a year specifically in the summer when rates are at their lowest. The course does not play long but like many Strantz courses it pays to know the course and to play smart. The greens were absolutely pure all you had to do was roll it on the right line and it would be in. Aside from course conditions I comeback here for the beauty of the grounds and the friendly staff. Driving down the entrance road every time is a cool sight every time.

What's not to Love

Played this course for the first time in a few years. Over all the greens like many area courses have recovered well after the winterkill issues. The tee boxes and fairways were a bit lush and fluffy and probably needed to be cut but that was likely a result of the good bit of rain that came down the previous two days. This also caused cart path only but we got out first and had no issues with time. Played in under 4 hours as there were few people on the course ahead of us. My favorite part about this course is that the layout plays fair but is challenging. Additionally, it has a quiet beauty too it and the ruins on holes 4 and 6 add a wonderful touch to the character of the grounds.

Recovering Nicely from Winterkill

This early summer season in Myrtle Beach "Winterkill" has affected many courses including the Fazio design I played the course in mid-june and it was 2 weeks post-seasonal/winterkill maintenance. Many of the greens were still patchy and soft from the combo of aeration and sod patching. So when I went back two weeks later I was ready to see how quickly recovery was moving along. To my surprise the recovery was very quick if I had to put a number on it I would say the greens are 90% healed. They were rolling well again and ready for normal play. So for those coming to play know that this course like others is close to a point where you wouldnt even notice the difference compared to two months ago. Aside from the conditions coming back the course itself is a test. The layout makes it play 200+ yards longer than the scorecard shows. Typical, Fazio placement is key throughout the round. Barefoot service is outstanding. The Weather was perfect and made for an enjoyable round.

For the Price its a good deal

Eagle Nest is one of those old time Myrtle Beach course that is somewhat forgotten about. I haven't played it since I was a junior over 15 years ago. A group of 8 guys we were looking for a cheaper early morning round before my wedding on a Friday in April the heart of peak golf season down here. So 43$ we found Eagle Nest.

Let's just say the value was amazing for a time of year normally people are paying 90$ plus for rounds. Add in the winter kill issues courses down here have had an you have some disgruntled golfers.

Eagle Nest, however, was the exception to that this golf season. Quick points, older course layout is nice, not super long, small greens, and tighter fairways. They have new tips setup on every hole presumably waiting to open those once the ground is ready. Staff was incredibly friendly. Pace of play was average for peak season 5 hours. Mind you we were first two groups out on the back side and played that in 2 hrs and 3 hrs on the back with split tees is to be expected.

Conditions, were really good for a value course like this one. Some spots on greens and fairways struggling but seldom. Greens were decent speed and fair. I was impressed.

Overall, this place is a great value. A wonderful spot to take a Junior out. They charge 15$ for ours. Only negative I would say is lack of a starter jammed things up a bit out of the gate but hey not the worst thing in the world.

Recent Reno's nice but still more to do

I played this course for the first in a few years. They recently put a good chunk of money into the course and the clubhouse. On the course it was mainly the greens is my understanding while the clubhouse was a complete rebuild. The clubhouse is much nicer and the grill was open early in the morning they even made a burger for a friend at 8am. Odd choice for 8am food but hey who am I to judge.

Anyhow from a course conditions stand point the greens are definitely nice they weren't overly fast but with them being completely new surfaces that's understandable. Off the greens fairways were in decent shape with some patch areas but the Bermuda rough was struggling. Given the winter we have had down here (lots of winter kill of Bermuda) its hard to judge if its lack of maintenance or weather related so have to wait and see on the rough and fairways. From a layout standpoint its a strong older layout with dog legs and smaller greens. Its not long depending on the tees you play from and if you hit em straight you can score and if they are crooked you have chances to recover. Pace of play was decent for it being peak season waited on some holes and other times it moved along.

Staff was on the quieter side but friendly.

So final assessment its a decent place to play but for 92$ peak season its a little on the high side but if they continue to improve conditions then this place can become a solid spot to play. Its worth paying attention to how it goes.

A wonderful design in need of some TLC

Growing up I always wanted to play Heather Glen on my trips to Myrtle Beach. It was one of my favorites on the strand. So when I played the other day I was expecting similar feelings to remain, however, I found myself a bit underwhelmed.

The course design and layout are still fantastic as the layout forces you to hit the right spots and the smaller greens place a premium on accuracy. Your short game will need to be sharp.

The conditions are not up to par compared to my memories. Having lived in the area the past several years conditions this winter were prime for all courses to be in wonderful shape, yet Heather Glen is lagging in this area.

The fairways are not barren but they are far from pure. Green wise the white 9 are slower and not as great as the blue 9. However, the greens were firm on approach shots.

The value for what we paid is there and if you are someone coming from the North you will see conditions similar to what you are accustom to in April in the North.

The clubhouse and the pro shop are a bit unwelcoming. The exterior could use a paint job and some grooming. The pro shop is rather empty and lacks large merchandise choices. Its almost as if they are working under the idea that the land is going to be sold in the near future.

Overall, the course layout and the value are still there and worth playing if you are looking for a Scottish influenced course. We paid around 60$ I wouldn't pay more though, so keep an eye on price when booking. My hope is that this course will not disappear and with a little TLC can return to its formidable self of years past.

This place is the real deal

Full Disclosure: I am a local and I am a member at TPC that being said the course is a wonderful place and in great shape right now.

For starters from the time you arrive the staff is extremely helpful and positive and the facilities are well kept. Range balls are included so arrive early to warm up and make sure you roll a few putts because the green speeds and conditions are some of the best on the strand. They are usually rolling at about a 11-12 on the stimp. Since they are bermuda accounting for into the grain or down grain putts is needed.

The fairways and greens are lush and in incredible shape right now. The only thing that has yet to come in is the bermuda around the sand traps. These areas are still coming out of dormancy so you will get some odd lies around the traps but nothing unmanageable.

The Fazio layout will test all parts of your game and if you put yourself into the wrong spot off the tee you could pay the price. I highly suggest if you have never played the course that you play from the correct tee boxes maybe even go one ahead of your normal tee grounds just to make it more enjoyable. You shouldn't be fooled by the distances on the scorecard as Fazio's design sets up in a way that par is protected well on each hole regardless of distance.

Value wise given the conditions this course is worth it. It is definitely one of the top 10 places on the strand and maybe the most affordable of that group.

Pace of play is usually very good there are times were it can get a bit slower. This is depending on what part of the course you are on as some par 3's are followed by reachable par 5's.

You will also enjoy the wildlife throughout the course as there are some scenic areas where you may come across alligators, turkeys, deer and various water fowl.

Final thoughts TPC has a bit of everything and is a great flagship course for the area's golf business. Definitely, play here!
