Could be so much more

Virtually impossible to find a weekend tee time in Northern Virginia these days so I tried Locust Hill. I agree with many others that the layout is really intriguing. All of the holes are fair, the fairways are wide and the hazards are places in reasonable spots. It's not easy, though. Multiple forced carries off the tee or on the second or third shot. Unfortunately the course conditions are only fair. The tee boxes were bad. Not the worst I have seen but down in that lowest tier. The greens were fine. Not perfect but reasonably good for a public course. The sand was mixed. A few bunkers were in good shape with nice soft white sand. most had a thin layer of brown sand that played almost like sandy dirt. The fairways were pretty sad. Mostly clumps of grass surrounded by dirt or weeds. If you play here, just plan to take preferred lies in the fairway. I walked and mostly that was OK (I'm over 60 and in reasonably good shape) but there are about 5 or 6 times where it is a bit of a hike from green to tee. The price is right and I recommend it for a "practice round" to get out and enjoy the outdoors for a few hours.

Worth it

Course was in great shape. Greens are true, if a bit slow. Rough was punishing, though. It was more than twice as thick as a golf ball diameter making it hard to find your ball and hard to get out. Lesson learned - stay in the fairway! Course layout is good with some challenging but fair holes.

Any Course in a Storm

It was supposed to be a 60 degree day in February and I found a good price so I went to my favorite bargain course. Nice surprise when I arrived and they gave me a senior discount. Bad surprise when it never got over 50. The layout is good but the course itself is only fair. Consider it a practice course, keep your expectations low and you will enjoy yourself. Carts included in the greens fees. You don't want to walk this course - too many hills and tees well apart from greens.
