2024 Springtime Golf

I've enjoyed playing High Bride Hills but they have gotten pretty expensive. When I saw a deal on Tee Off I jumped on it. The course was a little wet from all the rain we've been having but in more than playable shape. The course is still coming out of winter hibernation but the greens were rolling pretty well. They greens weren't aerated so I expect this is coming in the next week or so. The course's main defense is the Fescue that lines the fairways. The grass is still short so if you spray it around, now is the time to come out to play!

River Ridge rocks

Light on river and heavy on ridge, this course is a fun challenge. It doesn't have length (6300yds from the tips) but the routing and green's defends par. There might have been 2 holes where you weren't asked to work your drive right or left. I played in early March and the grass was still dormant. The greens have a ton of movement and slope. Not excessively large and there are well defined pin placements. I'd come back in a heart beat.

Wendell CC - Punches above its weight class

My expectations for Wendell CC were moderate. What a pleasant surprise that Wendell CC over-delivers! I could tell that this used to be a private country club with nice amenities. I was here for the golf, not lounging by the pool though. The Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Even though this is "The South", I will always shout-out high level hospitality. I was paired up with a couple of guys my own age. I liked the layout almost immediately. On the 3rd hole I drove my ball up the right side.
I definitely Geeked out when I found my ball in the middle of Church Pew Bunkers much like the venerable Oakmont. There are a number of unexpected design features that made playing here a bunch of fun. We were having fun until the 7th hole when one guy pulled something in his back and had to quit. We carried on as a 2some until a young guy joined us on the 10th. The front and back are very different and both enjoyable to play. If I lived around here, Wendell CC would be in my Rota.

A Gem of a course

Wendall punches way above its weight. WCC looks like its been here forever. Nice layout with some surprises. I played my drive up the right on hole 3. I never imagined my ball would end up in the "Church Pews" a la Oakmont! What a cool design feature! WCC continued to delight with interesting green complexes. I would play here a lot if I lived close by. I could tell that this was a private club at one point. As one of the Hoi Polloi I am grateful. My rating would be higher, but WCC isn't Bethpage or La Jolla.

Lochmere is a solid choice

This was my first time visiting Lochmere. The immediate vibe I got was that the people here take their golf seriously. Lots of people on the range on a Tuesday. I was hooked up with a flat-belly and an retired FDNYC captain. We played from the same tees and we all had fun. The layout is a nice mix of challenging and easy holes; if any golf hole can be called easy! The course condition is in the top 80% of those I've played. Super friendly staff. If I lived around here, Lochmere would be on my Rota.

Rutgers GC is holding up well

Did my graduate work at Rutgers in the 80s and played here a lot. Had a day off so I decided to play the old course. Much the way I remember it except my approach shots are starting 25+ yards further back. The course is short by modern standards but you need to play strategically and not just bomb it. There is a lot more movement to the greens than I remember. 3-putts are a real possibility if your ball ends up on the wrong side of the hole. Conditions were better than most with the bunkers being in stand-out condition.

Rutgers GC 05Oct23

I did my undergrad and graduate studies at Rutgers and played it a lot as a student. I couldn't remember the last time I teed it up here so I booked a tee-time through GolfNow. I'm glad I did. Its been 40 years since my school days but Rutgers GC has withstood the test of time. I may not be able to drive the 1st green anymore but there is still plenty of challenge to go around, especially if you spray it here. Most holes are pretty gettable even with a fairway metal off the tee. That hardly diminished the fun or enjoyment of playing here again. The greens were running fast and true. I was reminded about some of the server slopes on the greens by being on the wrong side of the hole. Still having to go to school here but lots of fun! I will have to make it a point to play here more often.

BRT delivers

Anyone who lives within 30 minutes of BRT should play this course once a week. I drive ~1.5 hours to play here, and gladly do so. Its a treat to golf this track, though in the 4xs I've done so, I haven't been able to play the Trail course. The Pro shop said they got 0.7" of rain the night before my round. The course drains beautifully. A little squishy in places, but acceptable. No faking it with ball striking. If you didn't make ball contact first, you got immediate feedback. The staff is friendly and accommodating. An overall enjoyable experience.

Community Golf Course

Much like LACC (2023 US Open) CCP has short par 4s and long par3s. The only forced carries you will find on the course are the par 3s and some wetlands through the fairways. If you're spraying your drives plan on bringing lots of balls. It is tree lined on the side of a mountain so you will no doubt have challenging lies. Its score card may indicate a lap-dog, but it has teeth for those who don't golf their ball.

Fall from Grace

I look forward to playing High Bridge Hills every year. You can hardly call it a muni in that it is usually maintained way above average. The Front 9 played well and my foursome commented on how well the greens were rolling. The back 9 showed very differently. We were all struck by how poorly the fairways were being kept. Lots of crabgrass and weeds throughout. One of my playing companions quipped that HBH must've run out of money. The saving grace was that the greens were still being looked after. A bit disappointing but it really didn't affect our play....mostly aesthetics.

Fun course in the Poconos

I've driven by this course many times without realizing there were 18 holes tucked off of Rt209. Staff was welcoming upon arrival. No practice/putting areas; just chipping in the grassy areas around the 1st tee. I would consider the 1st three holes as warm up holes as they are short and not very demanding. The following holes ratchet up the difficulty and visual appeal. Keep in mind that the ball will break away from the mountain and you'll do just fine. I'd have to say that the par 3s are the foundation of this course. except for 2 holes, they all played over 200yds from the blue tees. Driving areas are tight but less than driver can pulled for most of them. Poconos Hills is a fun course that should be on your play-list.

Donald Ross Gem in the Peidmont

The front 9 is a Donald Ross design with deep greenside bunkers and smallish greens. Elevation changes are prominent on most holes. The green complexes really shine with no 2 alike. Greens pitch front to back and back to front and all manner of sideway tilt-keeps you guessing! The inward 9 is fun with ample challenge on your drive to work the ball both ways. Overall an enjoyable round of golf.

27 hole facility worth playing

Blue Ridge Trail (BRT) is a 90 minute ride for me. It's worth the car time once or twice a year for me to play here. It's a pretty golf course with a good layout. Long hitters won't be challenged at BRT but the average hacker will find ample amounts. Greens were aerated 3 weeks before I played and they had healed
nicely. You can tell the owner takes pride in maintaining the course to a high standards. Enjoyable to play.

Gem in Central PA

I live on the west coast of NJ and believe it or not, there are an abundance of golf courses within a hour's drive. The Blue ridge Trail is about a 90 minute drive on 80. How does a course amass such a high rating in the wilds of PA? BRT is a SPECTACULAR golf facility. Grass practice facility and a modest clubhouse but over delivers on GOLF. I didn't get to play the 3rd nine, Trail, but judging by Ridge and Blue, it no doubt will exceed expectations. The ONLY nit I would Pick is the Pace of Play. REALLY slow. 18 took close to 5 hours. No good with Standard-time prevailing. Good thing I cleared my calendar and enjoyed a perfect Fall day.

You have to drive well

At times this round felt more like a real estate tour than a round of golf. Miles and miles of cart driving. That added up to a round over 5.5 hours. Even though we had excellent fall weather and CCP is in a beautiful place in the world, it felt like a long round. The Staff were super friendly and accommodating. There was a frost delay that morning but slotted me in as soon as they could. The course is a nice mix of short and long holes. IMHO, the par 3s is where the challenge is at CCP. Overall, the conditions were very good. The greens rolled slow and not because there is a lot of slope on them. This is a tree lined course and you can't spray it without penalty. CCP is a short, sporty course that you should play at least once.

A we bit of Links in Maryland

It was work finding this course but worth the effort. My 10:40 tee time was pushed back 35 minutes due to a frost delay. Would've been great if a push notification went out there was a delay. Maybe these guys don't believe in technology. Fun and challenging course. Nice mix of stretch holes and sporty short par 4s. Greens are generally large with lots of movement. The guys I joined said somehow the wind always blows here. It was gusting over 20 mph. Just some added challenge. The only problem is that the round got close to 5 hours. Rangers tried their best but could move things along. I would go back though!

Thank you and our sincere apologies for not providing the frost delay notification, as we normally do. This was an oversight on the part of new staff, as it was the first delay of the year. It won't happen again. Cheers,

Good agronomy Practices are showing

Disclaimer: I've been a fan of Harker's Hollow ever since the new owners have come on board. The course has flourished under there stewardship. The greens were aerated within 2 weeks and they putted extremely well. The fairways are in great shape after a long summer season. The tee-boxes have shown a lot of wear consistent with the amount of play they have and should be on the Super's to-do list. We teed off at 8am and were done by 11:45 - not bad for a Sunday in Sept in NJ. The most glaring problem with the course are the cart paths. The slope found on many of the holes necessitates the use of a hard surface and not loose material that would be flushed away in a heavy rain. The capital expenditure would be considerable for an improvement like this but my kidneys would thank the management.

Failure to maintain

My first time playing here this year. The owners have not kept up with maintaining Mine Brook. Many of the fairways were not fair. Eroded and weedy was the usual. The Greens were barren and have weeds throughout. I played as a single on the Saturday before Labor Day at 8:40. By myself. No one wants to play here because of the poor conditions. The Staff was very friendly though. The neglect felt like the owners are looking to sell the place. What a shame if more condos go in.

Greens are green (not barren) and traps are improving. They are short handed there, hopefully that will improve.

Harkers Hollow - Recommend

HH has made great strides in bringing this course back from the brink. The superintendent is the MVP of the organization. His course stewardship and agronomy skills are top shelf. The staff is friendly and accommodating. You will have an enjoyable round at HH. If you have time, stop by the Uniontown grill. The food is well crafted and elevated beyond bar food.

Bulle Rocks

I can understand why Bulle Rock has had golf championships held there. Pete Dye's vision fit the contours of the land just about perfectly. The course's main defense is the elevation changes found throughout the layout. The greens are huge, at least to those I'm use to playing, requiring thoughtful approaches/club selection. The proximity to the bay.oacean made the day humid, and combined with the heat, we were all soaked by the end of the round.
