Pearl of The Caribbean

Every winter my wife and I try to find a warm weather resort and golf course to break up the chilly, wet weather of upstate SC. Sometimes we have bad luck.....it snowed in Scottsdale last year and Florida can get very crowded and subject to different weather conditions. For some reason this year we decided to trade off perfectly manicured golf courses for the certainty of warm weather for golf. Curaçao provided the weather, Pete Dye provided the course. Old Quarry is a wonderful challenge, especially if your clubs have been gathering dust since November. Scenic, challenging, a true test of golf with the prevailing winds, and fun. My wife and I played for four consecutive days and each round brought out new wrinkles of the course and how to play it. I am not a fan of Dye’s courses but this one is not tricked up at all. Can’t say enough about the layout.

Course conditions remind me of other courses in desert regions....the greens are good but the fairways may have some bare spots. The greens were in great shape, well maintained and very puttable. The layout is very fair for men and women and several of the holes are truly memorable. If good morale comes from doing a hard job well, you’ll really enjoy the 19th Hole if you shoot your handicap.

The staff here is small but helpful and Curaçao is not necessarily a destination location, but if you want to play a great course in warm, even hot, February weather come play Old Quarry for a few rounds.

Destination Golf Whistler, BC

Whistler, BC has some great golf courses and outside activities that make this a great destination, especially if you are trying to beat the heat of August in South Carolina. Our first course was Nicklaus North and it was a great start to our golf adventure. Had a good breakfast in the adjacent restaurant and warmed up in average but adequate range facilities next to the first tee. Once we hit the course it was nothing but golf pleasure; an excellent course in superb condition with nearly perfect bent grass greens. The layout is simple, well marked for cart golfers and easy to walk if so inclined. It is a typical Nicklaus Signature course in that if you choose the right tee box you will have a challenging but fair and enjoyable round of golf. The Par 3s are a bit long on the back nine but we play golf to play holes like this. Needless to say, the views were beautiful with gorgeous mountains and glacier fed streams and lakes. Pace of play was fine which enabled us to take in the scenery, have a local brew on the patio of the same restaurant where we had breakfast, and to soak in the mountain air. A great experience and a must play course if Whistler is your choice of a golf vacation.

Wonderful day on the RTJ Course

What a great course for winter golf. Great greens, thick fairways with Bermuda overseeded with rye, and a layout designed to make you think. The course has everything....sand, wind, water and a great view of the ocean. Playing as two couples, we found the course to be very fair and equally as challenging. Pick the right tee box and enjoy a great day of golf....choose poorly and and dig deeply in the golf bag for another ball. Lots of play on the day we were there, but pace of play was four hours. The golf carts with GPS are a real benefit. Great staff ( actually the starter was a little cranky) and a pro shop stocked with a wide variety of men's and woman's attire. If you are in HH this is a great place to play. We'll be back next year.

Good Experience at Golden Bear

Hadn't been here in 10 years but the course is much better than I remember. Easy check in, courteous staff, and a good selection of merchandise in the pro shop. The range facility was adequate but average at best. Loved the course layout....not as challenging as other Nicklaus courses I have played, the green side bunkers were great for the average golfer and the sand in them was consistent in all five of them I was in! The greens were fantastic to putt on....firm and fast which made them harder to hold but very fair to play. My only gripe (whine) would be the fairways, which were very thin leading to some very tight lies. For February in the South, this is to be expected so I mention it only to justify several of my terrible approach shots. All in all, a very good experience and a course I would recommend to anyone headed to Hilton Head.

Excellent Resort Course

Played this with my wife the day after playing the Plantation Course at Kapalua. Stunning views and a course much more playable for the average golfer. Wide fairways, good greens and ample challenges from the various water hazards to keep you on your toes. As good as the course was, the staff was equally poor. Aloof for the most part, they were basically rude when they had to interact with us. It was a pleasure to leave the cart area and the staff there behind and meet a pleasant starter on the first tee box. The round was wonderful, the course pleasurable, but my lasting memory was basically having to argue with the cart staff to get my bags to the pick up point and leave the course in my rear view window.

TV does not do this justice

If you are more than a casual golfer, this course must be on your bucket list, it is really worth the time, travel and money to play here. It is a course with more breathtaking views than you can imagine and challenges on the course that can leave you physically and mentally exhausted. Most golfers are familiar with the back nine from the PGA Tour and 17 and 18 are wonderful holes....grip it and rip it and brag to your friends back home how you made par on these long holes.....it's doable. The front nine is a mental challenge with long par 3s and challenging short and long par 4s that really make you think. We played on Super Bowl Sunday when winds were steady at 25 gusting to 35 and had a wonderful time. My wife and I were worn out from the wind but slept well that night.....it kind of reminded us of Tralee but 40 degrees warmer. The greens were a little bare but that was not a factor. The staff was marvelous, especially the starter, and the practice facilities were excellent. Play this course, pick the right tee box and test your skill; you will get a true perspective of how good PGA professionals truly are. As an aside, to the Falcon fans in the 19th hole who rejoiced at having a 21 point lead when we left......I told you so!

Turtle Bay PalmerCourse

Played this course recently with my wife while vacationing in Oahu. Excellent course, challenging but fair for both of us. The course was in great shape and the weather was excellent. The fairways were firm and tee shots really ran in the fairway. This was good for an extra 20 yards but could be trouble as the fairways are often sloped and carry tee shots toward hazards, either sand or water. Greens were fair and rolled equally well. Pace of play was good and the starters were very accommodating. It's a resort course so they do not push guests to play quickly, but this was not a problem as we played our rounds both days in about 4:10. Additionally, the beverage cart was readily available and the restaurant adjacent to the clubhouse is the best one in the resort for the menu and value. There were some small but aggravating points, however. Like many places trying to cut costs, the golf staff is small and overworked so the check in of several groups simultaneously resembles semi organized chaos and a course orientation was marginal at best. The ride to the first tee is about 10 minutes and the practice range at the Palmer Course was closed both days. The other practice range was 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. The golf however was great and this is a wonderful course to play.
