Kapolei Golf Club
Played On 04/27/2015Playing in Paradise at Kapolei
I played Kapolei Golf Course as a single with my wife as a rider (extra $22). We arrived at a beautiful club house that is designed to be like a glass house - something you might see in an Architectural Digest magazine in the 1960's for mid-century modern style. We were greeted by a friendly staff member in the parking lot, who wanted to help me with my bag. Their pro shop was fully stocked with an abundance of inventory, and the bathrooms were really clean.
We ate at the restaurant prior to our round (great food and service). My wife had a burger, I ate fish and chips; both prepared to perfection.
Afterward, I hit a small bucket at their range. They offered some worn mats to hit from, without rubber tees to use (I saw some locals using their own - I had to fabricate my tee from scrap tees and golfer tape I carry) - a bit disappointing for such a high end place.
The course is beauriful with well maintained tees and greens. Fairways roll well, especially after an overnight shower. It was windy though as you would expect from Leeward Oahu. Followed a pair of Japanese tourists who played a bit slowly, but tried to hurry (always running between shots). Round took 4.5 hours. All in all a great golf experience.
The Dunes At Maui Lani Golf Course
Played On 01/15/2014A diamond in the rough
For the last fifteen years, I have visited Maui twice a year. Each time, I try to play The Dunes at least once. The course is well maintained, has some very long holes, a scenic setting with views galore from many holes. There are lots of elevation changes and blind hazzards so playing multiple times would give one an advantage. Even though the tee sheet was full on the day we played (wife and me) we only had to wait on one or two holes. Most of the golfers here are locals. The staff treats you well with a cool towel to greet you after the round. The range is lit for use at night. A fun place for the avid golfer on vacation. The 19th hole is the famous Cafe O'Lait at the Dunes - serves a fantastic dinner by Maui standards.
Makaha Valley Country Club
Played On 9/16/2013The North Shore of Oahu
I have played he many times and the course is always fun. The layout is very challenging and the tees/fairways/greens are all pretty well maintained. My only complaint about the conditions is that when cruising on the paved cart paths, it feels like I'm doing a test run for Range Rover! C'mon Kapolei golf, put some more money into this gem of a course. Otherwise, this course is fun, fast, and a fair test of golf for all levels if you pick the right tees.
Wailea Golf Club - Emerald Course
Played On 8/10/2013Scenic course with challenging layout
Wailea Emerald has always been one of my favorite courses on Maui. It features a challenging Robert Trent Jones layout with unmatched scenic views of the ocean. The lush greenery and landscaping is very well maintained as well as the placement of natural lava rock formations that make for easy carries to forgiving fairways. The day we played the course it had been aerated just four day prior, so the putting was not as easy as it normally was in the past. It had also been raining lightly this day, so the ball did not roll as much on the fairways as it normally does here. How ever, with the rain, the course was less crowded so only serious golfers came out making the round's pace very fast - less than 3-1/2 hours!
This course is one of my favorites here. The staff is really friendly and the pro shop is one of the best anywhere. The only thing wrong with the day was that the course was cart path only and the range was closed due to the weather, which is understandable.
Kahili Golf Course
Played On 8/9/2013Excelelnt value golf on Maui
Having played this course many times on our biannual visits to Maui, my wife and I have always enjoyed our rounds at Kahili. Located centrally on the island on the windward side of the mountain, this course gets plenty challenging by bringing the factor or the strength of the wind into play. The course itself is well maintained with greens that are typical for the island - you have to pay attention to the grain to putt well. Fairways are well groomed, and the tee areas are in good condition.
We have noticed that this course gets less play than many of the other courses on the island, probably due to its location away from the tourist areas. This is a benefit for the golfer who likes a course that plays quickly. We played the course a couple of days before they were hosting the Hawaiian Junior Golf Championship.
The restaurant at the clubhouse looks inviting, with a prime rib and seafood buffet that was given many awards for its quality of food (Thursday evenings).
This course meets our "Three F's" - Fun, Fast, and Friendly.!
Wailea Golf Club - Gold Course
Played On 8/7/2013Great views, great golf.
Wailea Gold was probably one of the most scenic courses on Maui. On almost every hole, the views of the ocean and Molokini are a distraction to your golf. The layout of the course is challenging with the course designer, Robert Trent Jones II, making use of the natural terrain and prevailing trade winds to make the golfer think before selecting their club.
I have played the Wailea courses many times and have always had that satisfied feeling of golf fulfillment afterward, wanting to come back for more.
Maui Nui Golf Club
Played On 8/6/2013Friendly course. Good for couples golf.
Being visitors to Maui, my wife and I have enjoyed this course on almost all of our trips here, along with other courses on the island. The course conditions are always in good shape with fast greens and well maintained fairways. Staff is friendly but not to the point of being "kiss ups". Pace of play seemed slow due to a family with two kids in front of us from Japan (we had to tell them they can drive their cart to their balls in the fairway) but completed the round in three forty five. Good value on Golf Now for Maui.
Hawaii Prince Golf Club - A/B Nines
Played On 9/17/2012Golf at the Prince
My wife and I played this course for the fourth time. This time, we Played b-c combination of the 27 hole layout. The A course was being aerated. The round took a quick 3 hours 15 minutes despite having a couple of Japanese tour vans of players on the course.
The conditions were nice with the grass well groomed, cleanly sharp cut edges next to the paths. Greens were fast and true. I just wish more players would learn to fix their ball marks!
Fun experience. Would do it again.
