Mallard Golf Club
Played On 11/06/2022Great Value
First time playing this course...
The course has been open for about seven months. The greens need to mature a little but they still have decent pace and roll pretty true. They are still pretty firm - it's new tifeagle and they will soften as they mature. Fairwarys are coming in well. Not a lot of rough but it's bermuda in November.
So course conditions were pretty good. Maybe not great but for being less than a year old, they are doing a great job with the course and it is only going to get better.
As for the layout, it is a traditional links style course with very, very few trees. Hazards and brush waste area (much of which had recently been cut down) frame the holes well. It's a challenging course, especially given there is nothing to block the wind. .
Green fees before noon on a Sunday were $42. I would say for this area that's an exceptional value.
The staff was great!
I recommend the course and look forward to playing it again.
The Golf Club at Chapel Ridge
Played On 03/24/2022Great Layout
First time playing this course and I enjoyed it. Nice layout with quite a few good holes. Visually appealing. Greens were slow but they were smooth and held well.
Bunkers definitely need some work. But it is still March, dormant, and I think they have had some recent strong rains which could contribute to the bunker conditions. Overall, though, the layout more than makes up for everything else and I can't wait to see it when the bermuda is out of dormancy. It was a great value and I look forward to playing it again.
Tot Hill Farm Golf Club
Played On 04/24/2021Nice to play once
I equate this course to the poor man's Tobacco Road. It's an interesting course with elevation changes, rock outcroppings, wild greens, and lots of blind shots. Course condition was average at best but I don't think you play this course for it's condition. It's nice to play once in a great while as to play a course unlike just about any other golf course around. Visually, it's a very attractive course. There are a wide variety of holes. Use a range finder for sight lines off the tee because the elevation changes will confuse depth perception. in another month I'm guessing the course will be more attractive and in better condition.
South Riding Golf Club
Played On 10/07/2018Nice course
First time playing here. Probably a little better than expected. Course condition was okay but I'll give them higher marks considering the type of summer it's been and all the recent rain; lots of places have struggled with condition. Nice layout for the most part. Rough was high and tough. fairways were decent and firm. Greens were soft and had good pace. Greens are bent and they were recovering from stress of summer heat and too much rain.
Overall, I enjoyed the round and would play there again.
Thank you for playing South Riding and your review!
Southern Pines Golf Club
Played On 02/01/2018Worth a play
Southern Pines is a nice traditional Donald Ross course. The non-essential parts of the course could use some TLC but the important parts (i.e. greens, tees, bunkers and fairways) were well maintained for this time of year in NC. The green were smooth with decent pace. Overseeded fairways were good. Bunkers were well kept and, from what I saw, consistent. It looks like they apply their limited budget in the right places.
Pace of play was a little disappointing, but it is a nice little course and it was the first decent weather we've had in a while so there was a lot of traffic on the course.
The $40ish off-season rate is an okay value for the area making is an acceptable option for occasional play.
Red Hawk Run Golf Course
Played On 09/02/2017Great Course
Redhawk is a very nice course and a great value. The staff is outstanding. There are no negatives about anything associated with the course. Most impressive were the greens. They had good speed and were smooth as smooth could be. I thoroughly enjoyed playing there and will do so again whenever I am in the area.
Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club
Played On 04/16/2017Still Good
Used to live in the area and always enjoyed Raspberry Falls. It's been a couple years but is still a nice course to play.
It's a little pricey, but very much in line with upscale golf in the DC area on the weekend.
Greens had been punched some time back and were mostly healed but they were still bumpy. That's about it for the negatives on the course. Fairways and tees were in very good shape. So the course is in good shape but considering it's mid-April in Northern Virginia, I have to give course condition high marks.
The course layout is great. Spread out, but great. Not a fan of houses on a golf course but the houses here are so far removed from the golf course that none of them are in danger, even from the wildest golfer. And it is a beautiful track with scenic views...
The Pearl Golf Links - West Course
Played On 02/15/2014Nice place to play
Overall, for February after an ice storm, the course was in great shape. Layout is above average. Greens are excellent - quick for this area, especially this time of year. Course was pretty empty due to cold/wind so I breezed around quickly. Pro, starter, cart guy, etc. the entire staff was great! Looking forward to going back!
Thank you for your kind words! We hope to see you again at the course very soon for another 5-star experience. Thanks for choosing Mallard Golf Club.
