The Links At Overlake
Played On 09/10/2019Unassuming Wonder
This was my first time playing here. I typically default to Stansbury Park, but not anymore. What a fantastic course this is! It's clear the money goes to the course, maintenance, and playing enjoyment.
1st impression was concern, because of the road leading to the "clubhouse" is essentially a single lane farm road quickly paved over. That leads to a gravel parking lot. The clubhouse building looks like a double wide modular, and the surrounding grounds are quite bare. Inside, the staff is AMAZING! Very friendly and accommodating. There's a decent merch selection for such a small building. No snack bar, but some drinks and counter snacks are available.
The practice area is well maintained, open, and mimics the course conditions very closely. Newish range balls, and a wide, deep range. Bunker and chipping green, plus normal putting green.
Now onto the course...! WOW! For such a quiet, unknown course, the conditions were outstanding! Tee boxes were flat, full, and cut to a nice depth. Markers were easy to see from the path, and aligned perfectly with the hole layout. Fairways were soft, but still firm enough to get a good compression on the ball. Rough was cut long but manageable. The local grass beyond the rough is a black hole... Stay out of it at all costs! The bunkers were soggy from recent rain so no real comment on them. They looked good though. The greens were recovering from a fungus so there was some discoloration and a few bumps from that. They were very soft and receptive, even with long irons. They rolled very smooth and true, especially considering the fungus. I can't wait to play them once they're healed!
The layout is demanding. Links style, no trees, well positioned bunkers and water. Concrete paths run 90% of the track as well.
I would play this course daily if I could! It is absolutely worth the cost! Don't let the underwhelming clubhouse and parking lot detract you. This course is definitely a hidden gem. A must play course for sure!
Arizona Traditions Golf Club
Played On 03/09/2018One of my favorites!
I have played AZ Traditions quite a few times. It is almost always in good condition. Greens rolled smooth with a speed fitting to the customer base. Not too slow, not too fast. Bunkers are decent, the two I found had an adequate base and good amount on the top layer. Fairways were a little soggy in places but good overall. Rough was long enough to create a challenge, but not punishing.
My only complaints would be the carts are on the older side and could use an upgrade; and the tee box on the range was in rough shape. Not at all a dealbreaker.
What keeps me coming back is the friendly staff, and the course layout. Several holes offer different levels of challenge depending on your length and accuracy with the driver, and how you attack each hole. Everyone on staff is very friendly and helpful and makes me feel right at home.
I recommend this course, and will certainly be back again for another round!
Cimarron Golf Club
Played On 10/14/2017Very Fun Course
1st time here. The course was in really good shape, even with the prep work for their over-seed. Greens were smooth, receptive, and decent speed. Fairways are starting to dry out, but still soft enough to really attack the ball. Bunkers were soft and playable. A very fun course layout with some beautiful holes.
Only complaint is with the members. As a non-member, I was treated very poorly by other members. They continually hit into our group, rushed us off tee boxes and greens, even though we had no room to move faster due to slow play ahead of us. Completely unethical golfers, with absolute disregard for me and my friend.
Nonetheless, If not for the great staff and fun course, I'd never come back.
I recommend this course to anyone, however beware the members, as they seem to be very aggressive and disrespectful to public players.
Great Eagle Golf Club
Played On 10/08/2017Fun Course, Needs Attention...
I have enjoyed playing this course over the last few years. It is a bargain course, so I don't expect too much. However, I was sadly disappointed in the conditions.
Following the annual overseed, I was expecting better greens and bunkers. I understand it takes some time for the turf to fill in, but what is stopping the superintendent from giving the bunkers some much needed attention? The greens were very inconsistent. Some fast, some slow. Some were perfect, some were filled with spotty grass and extremely bumpy. Pace of play was awful as well. Cart path only explains some slow play, but 3 hours to play the front 9 is ridiculous.
I am also a bit of a stickler when it comes to practice areas. Their practice green was closed. The chipping green was half decent but the practice bunker near it was hard as a rock. The range balls need to be replaced as well. They are pure garbage. Finally, the range itself is terrible. Tee box was uneven, overgrown, full of divots, and inaccurate to the yardage flags.
The main things that will keep me coming back are the amazing staff, and the fun course layout. I still enjoyed my round there, but the course conditions leave much to be desired.
I still recommend this course, however be prepared for substandard conditions on a really fun track.
Pueblo El Mirage Golf Club
Played On 08/18/2017Hidden Gem
I absolutely love this course! The fairways were in really good shape. Rough was just long enough to make things interesting. Greens were a little bumpy but still rolled pretty good. I managed to avoid the bunkers so no input on them. Considering the time of year, this course is in fantastic shape! The layout is one of my all time favorites. There isn't much for elevation changes, but the hole layouts, trees, bunkers, and lots of water give the course plenty of character and obstacles. Only 2 complaints... The Pro Shop is tiny. Not much bigger than a walk in closet. And, having to drive through the surrounding neighborhood to find the nest tee can be a bit confusing the 1st time. Minor complaints though. I love this course! Playing again tomorrow. If you haven't tried it, do yourself a favor and check it out. It is a really fun, well maintained course for bargain basement prices!
Tres Rios Golf Course at Estrella Mountain Park
Played On 07/17/2016Solid course
Played this course for the first time today. Most in the area are dried out and in poor shape from the Arizona summer. The fairways are in pretty good shape, especially for it being mid summer. Highlight is by far the greens. They must be working on a new maintenance plan because the course is much better than reviews told me. Pin placement made a nice challenge and putting surface was immaculate. Best I've seen in a very long time. It's a fun layout that can be a bit confusing if you're not paying attention. The scenery is great. No houses lining the fairways, or anything else. Difficulty was a bit high for me because my drives are inconsistent so I was dodging trees a lot. Again, not something I'm used to seeing much of in Arizona. House staff is fantastic and the grill makes a mean burger. All around it is a gem. Prices are awesome, especially considering the good condition. Will play here again for sure!
