South at Boulders Golf Club & Resort
Played On 03/08/2018Boulders North
Boulders has a friendly staff including the starter, rangers, and beverage cart personnel. The driving range, short game area and practice green were near the first tee.
The yardage map was useful in determining club selection and layups. Be sure to get one at the starters shack as the carts do not have GPS.
Our foursome liked the layout with the somewhat wide fairways and challenging green complexes. I thought the greens were a little slower than I expected and there were some patchy areas.
There were ice and water stations throughout the course, The south 18 does not come back to the clubhouse after nine but the north course does after the front nine. The north course seemed to be more manageable as far as distance for women compared to some others. It nice to play the Boulders when staying in the Cave Creek/Carefree area since it is so convenient. I like both courses and will play here again.
Quintero Golf Club
Played On 03/07/2018Quintero designed by Rees Jones.,A must play
Quintero was about 45 minutes from Cave Creek and was an easy drive. Its best to get there a little early because its a few minute cart ride to the driving range and the start of the golf course. There are no houses visible on the course and its hilly and very scenic
All of the employees were professional, courteous and helpful.
There are 5 sets of tees and combinations of them ranging from 5043 yards to 7249 yards and a slope rating of 148.
The par 3's on this course are all pretty long even though they are downhill so I would say look at those yardages when deciding which tees to play.
A ball must be hit high to stay on the greens, low balls and low chips will definitely roll out and its best to play to the fat part of these very fast greens.
Our pace slowed a little on the back but it was a 4:15 round. There were water bottles in the cart, water on the course, a food and beverage station, and a cart girl that we saw numerous times. The GPS in the cart was very useful for this course. All in all a very fun and challenging course to play.
Monument at Troon North Golf Club
Played On 03/06/2018Troon North Monument is always a nice track to play
The bag drop, pro shop and cart attendants always are friendly and do a great job here of taking care of the golfers. The practice range, chipping area and putting green were in nice shape as usual. Brett the starter did a nice job explaining some course details and we teed off on time despite the other twosome showing up there at the last minute. I find that the fairways are somewhat spacious here and the GPS system is very helpful in determining distances for proper club selection from the tee box. The greens were in great condition and the ball tracked nicely. The back nine has some wonderful views late in the round from the tee boxes.
A stop in the Dynamite grill after the round is a must for some of their great happy hour food, beverages and a view from inside or on the deck.
Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain Golf Club
Played On 03/05/2018Outlaw at Desert Mountain
This is the Last course Jack Nicklaus has designed at Desert Mountain. Outlaw was opened in 2003 and is a links design. Much of the course has views of the Tonto National Forest, and Four Peaks, The Mcdowell Mountains and Pinnacle peak can be see from this high terrain track. The fairways are for the most part forgiving but the greens and areas around them make for a real short game test. You will use every club in your bag and every type of shot here. Club selection is critical on the teeing ground. Outlaw is a truly a very fun and challenging course to play especially on the first visit.
Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club
Played On 03/04/2018Absolutely
I would definitely recommend this to a friend. We played on a sunny and windy Sunday around lunchtime.
We arrived and checked in with the friendly pro shop folks and then visited the nice short game practice area and driving range which was a short distance from the clubhouse.
We were then greeted by the starter Lee over near the practice green and first tee where he did a nice rundown of the course, markers,,GPS, bathrooms and bottled water locations. He does an excellent job over there.
The Fred Couples layout offers wide welcoming fairways, over 100 bunkers and only 1 hole with water.
The pace was nice and the round took 4 hours on a busy course, thanks to the two rangers who do their job well as there were numerous sightings out on the course.
Some of the bunker shots were challenging and its best to play to the fat part of the greens and below the hole in some cases.
The greens had nice speed and its not one of those courses with big breaking or multi tiered greens everywhere. They played very fairly .
Ak Chin Southern Dunes is worth the easy drive down to play this track that can say on its resume that it has hosted many quality competitive events
Whirlwind Golf Club - The Devil's Claw Course
Played On 03/03/2018Fun and not overly challenging
We played in about 4 hours on a busy Saturday morning. The fairways are somewhat forgiving and the large greens putted very nicely. We definitely will play here again. The lunch on the patio outside the clubhouse post round was enjoyable. Friendly staff.
Wigwam Resort - Gold Course
Played On 03/02/2018Wigwam Gold Robert Trent Jones and Tom lehman Redo
We were greeted by a friendly staff here and the
pre-round lunch was excellent with a nice staff in there. The practice range tees were a little short on grass but the area was expansive. The starter was friendly and cordial and got us off on time. \We found the fairways to be very accommodating on this parkland style course and water came into play on many holes. The greens were very fast and undulating creating many challenging shots and it required high iron shots to keep the ball on the greens.`I have not played the other two courses but this likely is the more challenging of the three here.
Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club
Played On 03/01/2018Big Wick is worth the drive
Wickenberg Ranch Golf and Social club is a high desert course designed in rolling hills near Prescott national forest an easy hour or so from Scottsdale. The clubhouse and restaurant sit atop at hill overlooking the driving range and the par 5 18th hole. The layout includes 6 par 3's and 5 par 5's. The turf conditions here are superb. The blue tees played at 6486 yards and a slope rating of 134. The bent grass greens were receptive and rolled really nicely. This course will remain on my must play list for Scottsdale vacations.
The Quarry Golf Club
Played On 10/15/2017Challenging Layout and fun to play
We played on a very windy Sunday and had to move it up on the tees due to the heavy winds. The pace was nice because there weren't many groups out on this particular day. The greens rolled nicely considering the time of year.
The Sanctuary Golf Club
Played On 10/14/2017The Sanctuary is a must play if you are in the area
We played 3 courses in the area over the weekend and this one was the favorite so much we played all day. The fall rate is 38.00 and the replay rate 18.00 at this Brian Huntley design.
The friendly staff made our visit enjoyable. For this time of year the greens rolled very nicely because the aeration was done in August.
There are 5 sets of tees to choose from and if you want to play it long the back 9 is 3680 yards with the last two holes being 466 and 454 yard par 4's.
There is a hole by hole tip sheet on the website that came in handy, and like the website says you will use every club in the bag here.
StoneWater Golf Club
Played On 10/13/2017Challenging Layout
Stonewater is a golf community track that was fun to play. The driving range and putting green were right by the clubhouse and first tee. Range balls were included with the greens fee.
The greens had been aerified a couple weeks ago but still putted nicely. GPS and a rangefinder were a big help in navigating around this course.
The Rustic Grill was a nice spot to relax after the round to enjoy some of the very good food and beverages with both indoor and outdoor seating available.
Champion Lakes Golf Course
Played On 10/07/2017Challenging track
Champion lakes is a very challenging track with fast, undulating greens that rolled quite nicely. It feels a little more difficult than the 126 slope rating from the white tees.
There are forced carries to a lot of the flag sticks and the bunkers were well manicured. The fast greens make for putting with a lot of break with few putts that you could say were on the edge of the hole or a ball out.
Our round was five hours and a good deal of waiting due to slow golfers so i recommend playing during the week or early on the weekend.
Cranberry Highlands Golf Course
Played On 08/12/2017Muni links course
Cranberry highlands is a well manicured and challenging municipal course.
We played on a Saturday morning on the back Cranberry tees as the regular tees play a lot shorter at around 6000 yards. The driving range is on top of the hill so only irons can be used there for practice.
The course was in real nice shape but the consensus among the foursome was that the 66.00 was a little pricey. There is however a senior citizen discount available during the week.
The cart girl came around a few times but we never did see a ranger on the course. Play can be slower because of the heavy fescue surrounding much of the course but the local rule is that you play it like a lateral hazard.
Upper at Peek'n Peak Golf Course
Played On 07/29/2017Bring your A game
We were greeted by a friendly and welcoming staff prior to our round.
We planned on hitting balls before the round because the website says driving range but found out the range is at the lower course. The lower course is closed. Its best to drive down there first to hit balls before going to the upper course. Exact change is needed and there is a putting and short game practice area.
The pace of play was great for the two days we played although we played before 9 am both days and I do recommend playing early in the day. it will take a little longer playing the course on the initial visit but the GPS was a big help and so was the Bushnell with slope we had along
The course plays shorter than the yardage because of the number of downhill holes. Be sure to check out the view from the back tees on number 4 as its the highest point in the county. Be careful with the yardage from the tee on 4 to avoid the gully, about 200 yards from the blue tees and there is a split fairway for the second shot
Its definitely a placement type course with the bunkers, sloping greens, and undulating fairways.
The sloping greens were pristine and had nice speed. Putting and chipping from beyond the hole is tricky. I recommend the lunch on the patio overlooking the 9th green afterwards. Replays are 20.00 per nine but 18 holes was enough grinding for us
Peek n Peak is definitely a must play if you are in the area or are looking for a weekend away.
Iron Masters Country Club
Played On 06/10/2017worth the trip
We played on a Saturday the course was busy but the pace of play was fine. Enjoyed a nice breakfast before hand in the restaurant that overlooks the course. Thje track was well manicured and there were no real surprises being that it was our first visit. There is a bunker the whole way across the front of the green on 6. Hole 11 had a pond guarding the green. Had some issues with the ball bouncing when it hit the greens, but its a fun track and we will be returining
Sinking Valley Country Club
Played On 06/09/2017Stay below the hole here
Our foursome was in the area playing for the weekend and decided to try this course for the first time. We were welcomed by a friendly staff and even given some free tees prior to our round.
There is a driving range , practice bunker and a sand trap to prepare for the round. The bent grass greens rolled much nicer than a lot of public courses out there and its best to stay below the hole especially on the back 9 that goes a little up the grade to the ridge. There is a par 3 up there with a green like a ski slope. Yes i 4 putted for double bogey.
The wooded course was quiet and peaceful.
It was worth the trip and we are planning to return for another visit
Lodestone Golf Club
Played On 06/03/2017Great Hale Irwin designed mountain course
If you like mountain courses add this one to your list. We played this track on a Saturday and Sunday in early June.
We were welcomed by a friendly staff in all aspects including the cart attendants, pro shop, starter, ranger Joe and the cart girls. We were playing on a early season package that was booked through the resort thus we received a reasonable rate compared to the regular season greens fees.
The very challenging course has 6 sets of tees ranging from 5185 yards to 7475 yards and a 142 slope rating so there are many options for all types of golfers.
The cart path through the entire wooded course is done in cement and there are some sparsely located mountain homes and gorgeous views.
The many bunkers were very playable with a fine sand. A yardage device is a big help especially for club selection from the there are opportunities to hit 3 woods and 5 woods from the tee.
The large greens are full of slope green, providing for some interesting up and downs and risky 3 putts if you end up on the wrong side of the green.
There are a couple split fairways, a
biarritz green with a swale in the middle, a long downhill par 5 with a Deep creek lake view, and there is the par 3 17th green that sits atop a rock ledge.
There are some videos of the holes available for viewing on the course website so you can get a feel for what you are in for. All in all its a favorite mountain track that one can look forward to playinh.

Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club
Played On 05/05/2017Fun track to play
We played Blue Ridge Shadows on a rainy wet Friday in early May. The course design was challenging and well laid out but any level player would enjoy this course as there are 5 sets of tees to choose from.
They had to close the back nine while we were there because there had been so much rain recently
so we played the front 9 twice.
The slope rating from the white tees was 131 at 6204 yards. If you like playing from the tips a 144 slope rating and 7315 yards await you.
The clubhouse was a nice place to hang out in the spacious clubhouse after the round for some beers and watch golf on TV. Only drawback was some of the many bunkers are in need of some upgrading, but i do look forward to returning and playing the entire course.
The Phoenician Golf Club
Played On 02/25/2017Right next to Camelback
The Phoenician is a fun course to play with the desert and canyon nines playing like 2 different tracks. The desert nine has some holes right at the base of the mountain and there a couple wedge par 3's that are downhill. Seems like all the putts break away from Camelback. The canyon is a little flatter but still has rolling terrain. The relish burger bistro is a nice place to eat after the round. The staff and facilities are great.
Quintero Golf Club
Played On 02/24/2017Great Track
Although the course is a bit of a drive compared to most if you are staying in Scottsdale it is worth the trip.
It is a must play if you are going to be in the area. More challenging and hillier than most you will use every club in the bag
Thanks for your review of the golf course conditions, layout and overall experience. We hope we remain on your must play list for Scottsdale vacations and look forward to seeing you again soon!
Kind Regards,
Steve Outlaw, PGA
