Bandon Trails
Played On 05/17/2018A true hidden gem
I was waiting to play this course last and had heard varied reviews but I’m fan of Coore & Crenshaw courses. Teed off with my dad just the two of us and it was an amazing stroll through the forest. The par 3s are very strong, the start & finish coming back to the dunes felt natural. We asked every staff member we could what course was their favourite and at least 90% said Trails. (And many without hesitation). I had my best round of the trip so I’m sure that probably biases me a bit. Don’t snooze on this course, it’s great to play in the afternoon when the wind is up as it’s sheltered.
Pacific Dunes
Played On 05/16/2018You won’t play a course like this often
This was my 2nd round on the trip and had read about how it was so highly thought of. The routing, the greens and the sight lines off the tees make this a truly unique course. Doak gives you room off the tee but there are humps in the fairway that can shoot the ball sideways making the fairways narrower. The back 9 routing starts with back to back par 3s. The fact they both play near the ocean takes advantage of the land they were working with. Overall the back nine has 4 par 3s, 3 par 5s and only 2 par 4s. (13 is a visually great par 4). The green complexes are tricky but not unfair, it’s a great defence on some holes (1&2 come to mind). Bandon Dunes is a more fun, less penalizing course but Pacific Dunes is more of a test with lots of unique holes and views thrown in.
Old Macdonald
Played On 05/16/2018Play as a replay
Decided to try Old MAC as a replay round. Had great weather (can only imagine playing when it’s rainy/windy). Took me a few holes to figure out that the greens since they have bigger slopes were a bit slower speed wise than the other courses. The front 9 had some interesting holes - #3 is an interesting hole tee to green. #5 has a massive green and the best spot on the course is the 7th green/8th tee. Great views of the ocean. Back 9 was bear, almost every hole played uphill it felt. Played on its own it’s not a bad course but in comparison to the other courses it falls short. I’m glad I played it but it’s not at the top of the list to play again.
Bandon Dunes
Played On 05/15/2018Starting @ Bandon
Father/son trip started at Bandon Dunes and we found this to be the most fun of the 4 courses. The greens were in amazing shape and you could spray it without getting into too much trouble. Holes along the ocean were great (especially 16). Playing late in the day the finish is great for views/photos etc.
A word about the facility is it’s truly first class without seeming pretentious. Food is great, portions are generous and it rarely takes more than 10 minutes after ordering. The prices are reasonable (you can get a steak or fancier dishes but there was enough variety that we didn’t have to go).
Shuttles were great, everyone goes out of their way to get you where you need to go quickly.
Bandon Preserve
Played On 05/14/2018One of the best par 3s in the world
Played the Preserve the day we arrived. Took the flight from SF to North Bend and was warned it rarely ran on time. Checked in and wandered over for some practice swings. It was $100 for the round which was a bit pricey but proceeds go to wildlife preservation. Great course to warm up on. The views are fantastic we stood and looked at the ocean between shots. Making a couple of birdies helped too. This course is great to play as a replay late in the day. (If you play 36 already if you have the energy it’s free to play the same day). Don’t overlook this course some people like it more than some of the full length courses.
Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club
Played On 03/17/2016FUN
Had read online about this course and had a free day on vacation so our family decided to make the drive and try the course. (The free shirt/hat included in green fee for $115 sweetened the deal.) Played on St. Paddys day and the course had a few extras which helped. Practice facility is huge and in great condition. After getting beat up at some other courses and not knowing what to expect we teed it forward and had a blast. 6 par 3s and 5 par 5s added to the variety. The fairways were great and the greens rolled very true, we made more putts this round than the previous 3 combined. In response to previous posts yes there are a few greens on the front nine that may repel a good shot as there is more than one level on most greens but you can also play away from some flags and they can funnel back. No GPS in carts but there is an app available. Holes 2-7 are a good stretch (6 is a great risk reward par 4). Holes 13 & 14 are great camera opportunities. Its a bit of a drive to get there but you are playing ,a course that compares favorably with almost any $200+ in the area.
Quintero Golf Club
Played On 03/16/2016Par 3s worth the price of admission
Course conditions were immaculate, played 2 years ago and thought maybe I overhyped it but the fairways & greens were awesome. Holes 6 & 9 are 2 of the best par 3s I have played.
Best advice from starter when choosing a tee is that a significant number of approach shots play uphill so add 100-200 yards to the overall yardage so the 6400 yd tees play closer to 6600 and so on. Our group teed it forward and enjoyed ourselves more especially hitting shorter clubs into very fast greens.
Not as much for food/beverage once on the course as pro shop/restaurant is so far from 1st tee. Great variety of holes, a few shorter par 4s that play uphill. Bring your camera as there are many holes that are worthy ( see below). Bit of a drive and we played during high season but course definitely lives up to rating as a top course in Arizona.
Saguaro Course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club
Played On 03/15/2016Saguaro
Favorite course in the valley as its a walkable course, forgiving fairways and stunning scenery. One of few courses where when waiting to hit or to putt you can stand back and just look around at the landscape for miles (or if an apache helicopter flies by or this time a couple of jets). Greens aren't the fastest but roll nicely, at least 3 holes are risk/reward par 4s, par 3s face all four directions and play different distances. (Hole 15 I could stand on that tee box and hit shots all day.) Booked using the We Ko Pass while its tougher to get a tee time we paid $99. Have played courses (including Cholla) at least a dozen times and we always know what we are going to get which is a great facility and a great golf experience. My only criticism is the sand in the bunkers was sparse in some areas which caused the club to bounce off the bottom of the bunker. Our family looks forward to playing this course every year. If you are looking to play a great desert course this it!
Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club
Played On 03/12/2016Greens are the real hazard
First time playing, had heard this was a must play. Teed off 1030 am on a Saturday for under $100. The GPS does a great job identifying yardage to and carry of the bunkers out there. Yes there are a lot of bunkers but the fairways ones in particular the sand is great. I sometimes struggle out of them but by the end I was getting out with solid strikes. The greens were smallish and of course fronted a lot by bunkers meaning that you really need to flush your irons to hit and hold the greens. Shots that were hit well did stop but those not hit well will bounce off into bunkers. Course conditions were above average (fairways, greens etc). The bunkering was great at framing some holes. The pro shop/clubhouse had a unique look (in a good way). Was a bit breezy when we played and mostly into so be aware when picking a tee. Course does try and keep people on time (more so than other daily fee courses). Just outside my personal top 5 in Phoenix but a very solid option (would give it the nod over the Whirlwind courses) if you are able to get a good rate and don't mind the drive.
TPC Scottsdale - The Stadium Course
Played On 05/14/2015Feel like a tour player for a day
Played with my brother for his bachelor party. We booked the first twilight tee time as we flew in earlier that day. Paid about $110 and we played through one group on the front nine & basically had the course to ourselves. Holes 15-18 we hit multiple shots as there was no one behind us. When the stands aren't up 16 is a pretty average par 3, but 15 & 17 are a lot of fun.
Fairways were immaculate, were cut tight & were like trampolines off the drive.
As a bucket list course where the PGA plays a lot of fun but for anything around peak season rate tough pill to swallow.
South at Boulders Golf Club & Resort
Played On 03/19/2015Front 9 fantastic
Had heard good things about Boulders & I try to play courses with great scenery. Front 9 did not disappoint, great views, got some great photos. The back nine was good but well... plain. Course in great shape, greens rolled well. If you can get a deal play, but anything above $175 you might be disappointed.
