Haven’t played this course in 20 years

I was wary of playing this course after such a long time. However I was pleasantly surprised. It was in excellent condition except for sand traps having little ‘sand’. Most of the players I saw were walking which eliminate having to keep up with 3 riders in your group. The POP was about 4 1/2 hours which was fine for a group with 3 walkers. Greens were in excellent condition but some were extremely graded although not very fast.

Poor private course

I played this course as part of the Clubcorp network. The description indicated a well kept challenging course. Instead I found very mediocre conditions on a course that was extremely difficult to play.

The rough was not overseeded. In addition to the brown turf (which in of itself would be OK),, had numerous bald spots and many areas of muddy conditions. The layout had seven holes with water hazards across the entire fairway, 5 of which were blind to approach shots. Many other shots were over raised fairways so that landing areas were blind. Often the fairways were banked so that even if tee shots were hit in the fairway, they would kick into the rough and be unseen from the tee box. We spent a very long time trying to find balls the were hit relatively straight.

Better than average

I enjoyed my round here. Fairway and rough were in good condition. Bunker were inconsistent - some good and some hard. Greens weren't very fast but were extremely hard and the entire foursome were bouncing approach shots over the green. Round was $42 when I checked on Friday night but dropped to $29 on Sat morning since this tee time was now a single!!

Not a bargain

If you are looking to play a 'private' course for $60, look elsewhere. This course, while it is 'private' is no better than a mediocre muni in the area. There are numerous bare spots in the fairways and rough, greens are quite fast but rather bumpy and the fairways are lined by creeks or heavy underbrush so that any ball leaving the fairway is lost. The very narrow fairways mean - bring lots of balls.

If this isn't bad enough, POP was awful. I played on a Tuesday afternoon with a 12:00 tee time as a single ($62). I arrive at 11:00 and asked if I could go out earlier since the first tee was open. The Pro Shop guy admonished me saying that since I had bought the tee time at Golfnow, I couldn't go out early even if nobody else was teeing off. So I waited and 45 minutes later three foursomes arrived - 10 walkers. The net result was that at 4:45 with darkness settling in I picked up on hole 15. Had I played 18 holes I was headed for a 5 1/2 hour round - PRIVATE COURSE?????

Two different nines

The front nine was rather straightforward and had playable interesting holes. The last few holes on the backside were too gimmicky

Elegant but tacky

No doubt an elegant course in pristine condition, ... but

Starting at the driving range - after paying $250 for my round I don't expect to have to hit off a mat at the rang using old battered Taylormade balls that you'd find at a muni. Bunkers had no sand and were hard packed. Many, many bunkers so to save a bit of money there was only one rake per bunker, usually buried in the tall grass surrounding the bunker. By hole 14 with a 4some on our heels we gave up searching for the rake and moved on. Actually didn't make much difference since the ground was so hard there was no footprints. If $250 was not enough it cost $20 to valet your car or &15 for self-parking. Then your clubs got handed over to multiple people all with their hands out expecting a tip. Final indignity was that although I had a confirmed tee time as a single when I got to the starter I was told that the people that the twosome that I was paired with didn't want anybody else with the and I had to wait 45 minutes to go out. Not an overall pleasant experience at a fine course.

Greens awful

It gets me mad when there is no indication on Golfnow that greens have been recently punched. It was virtually impossible to put on these greens from more than 3 feet. Some courses will give warning but others just want to suck you in.

One of the better Corona courses

Course plays a lot better than it looks. Fairways are totally browned out but it's just the grass being dormant. Very few bare spots and very playable. NO ROUGH, just more brown stuff. Greens were very bumpy and pretty fast. Sand bunkers are actually dirt bunkers but not too packed down so that you can get a club under the ball.

Very few flat holes. Two par 5s play sharply downhill with LOTS of roll and two sharply uphill. The slope ofhese holes and a few other par 4s give you a variance of +/- 50 yards on your drives. On the signature 394 yard par 4 from the Whites, my normal 180 yard drive rolled out to 300 yards due to the 280 foot drop at the teebox and a wind at our backs. My playing partner drove OVER the green.

Took about 5 1/2 hours - no marshall or drink cart ever showed up. No matter how warm it is when you begin, make sure you have long sleeve in the bag if you plan to finish after 3:30. When the sun goes behind the mountains, the winds kick up and the temperature plunges.

All in all, one of the better Corona courses.

Cow pasture

Played Chino Creek about a month ago and was pleasanrly surprised - so decided to give Butterfield a chane. WHAT A MISTAKE. Fairways had many dead spots, rough was totally bare around the greens, bunkers had no loose sand and tee boxes were all chewed up. This is a truly awful course and wasn't worth the $15 green fee that I paid through teeoff.com.

Surpisingly nice

First time I have played this course (Chino Creek) in over 10 years and I was pleasantly surprised. Not an especially challenging track but Conditions were well above average for a Corona-Chino area course. Fairways had no bare spots, greens rolled true and were receptive to approach shots and teeing areas were spotless. Only negative were the dirt bunkers - sand was disguised as hardpack. Ownership has definitely upgraded the facility in the past few years. Best of all, I paid $9.00 for an 11:00 tee time at teeoff.com!!!

Hidden gem

Played this course for $30 on Sat 5/9 at 12:00. Nobody in front of me and finished in about 3 1/2 hours. Not one browned out area on the whole course. They seem to use recycled water and are able to keep up the irrigation. Fairways, rough and tee boxes were in perfect condition.Bunkers full of course sand like many other desert courses.

While the fairways are very wide, many holes have sharp doglegs which introduce trouble. Very few fairway bunkers but greens are surrounded and many are elevated which puts the short game at a premium.

This is not a course thast beats you up but isjust a p-leasure to play. It is not extremely hard but is not a pushover. Doglegs and features around the greens present challenges. The green, green grass makes the afternoon pleasant.

Hardpack fairways

Condition - Water rationing has had a big effect. Fairways and rough were browned out. Ground was extremely hard. Pitching and chipping was extremely difficult as club would bounce if ground was struck even slightly behind ball. It was like playing on hardpan. Strange condition since I played at El Dorado Park two days ago and it was still green. Needed a hammar to put tees into the ground on some holes.

Safety - Fairways are very close together and due to many doglegs, shots routinely sail into adjacent fairways. I had 4 balls sail past my cart and others in the group had similar experience. Hole orientation gave no thought to its impact on errant shots.

Pace of play - Took 6 hours and 5 minutes, and this was on Masters Sunday. Constant flow of golfers playing balls in our fairway a major reason of slowing. Of course, the large number of fivesomes didn't help. Neither does the low skill level of many of the golfers.

Last played here over 5 years ago and decided to give it a try. will be at least 5 years before I return.

Slow and sandy

As usual, pace of play was very slow. Took 5 hours and that included a speed-up over the last 5 holes.

Greens were 1/2 full of sand and the other half was extremely bumpy. Rest of course was in nice condition but greens were awful. Never told me when I made my reservation - shameful.

Cow psture?

Course condition was adequate but layout was void of any features. Water was on about 5 holes but came into play on only one. Front of greens were wide open on virtually every hole. Fairways were in good shape but fairly hard so the bals ran and ran and ran and rolled onto the greens. I can't comment on the trap since there was very few of them. All in all, this would be an average course in the LA area but far below average in the CV.
