Rocky Bayou Country Club
Played On 10/10/2023Good, but overrated
We made the drive to Niceville from the beach to play this course, because of the price and high rating (4.6 or higher). While it was fun, many of the reviews were exaggerated. Some said "immaculate", and that's not even close to accurate. It's like a nice park course. The greens were the best part and it didn't have any major weaknesses, but immaculate? Cmon. Long story short, we thought we had found an inland hidden gem, and while it's a good course in good shape, it's not any better than the Sandestin or Destin courses that are rated lower (more in the 4.2 range). Still, for $70 it was good value and a good time. Just temper your expectations.

We grabbed the first Twilight round at 3:00 and it was just two of us and we barely saw anyone else on the course. I am around a scratch and my 12-year-old son shoots in the 80s. Overall the greens were in great shape but a little slow. The fairways were in great shape. The tee boxes were pretty terrible, but that doesn't bother me so much. Overall we had a great time and really enjoyed the latout. Tom fazio delivers once again!

I'm a scratch golfer from out of state who dropped in on this course with my 11yo son. We both rode 18 for about $60 total. The course is short but pretty fun with several doglegs and some interesting slopes and elevation changes. Greens are pretty nice - they roll true and I'd say they were around 10.5 or 11. Would come back if in the area again.
Mountain Ranch Golf Club at Fairfield Bay

It's pretty difficult the first time you play it. Tee boxes and greens were consistent and good. Fairways were really good. Decent driving range and putting green. Compared to nearby Indian Hills, this is a pretty significant step up in quality and layout. I'd definitely pay the extra $10-$15 to play here.

Staff was great. Price was great. Only saw a couple other groups. Course just wasn't maintained all that well. Several tee boxes had just been re-sodded and were very wet and uneven. Greens were about as slow as I've ever played on. Fairways and rough were decent. But what can you expect when you're paying $55 for two players to ride 18 holes. In that regard, it was good value. There were a few memorable, scenic holes.

We were a little spoiled. Went off at 9am on a Monday and never ran into anyone in front of us, never saw anyone behind us. Just my dad and me, we played in 3.5 hours. Had a great time. Both played well. All aspects of the course were in good condition. Certainly not Augusta, but nothing was so bad it was deserving of a complaint. Greens were a little slow (probably a 9 or 9.5) but putted true.
