Hidden Creek Golf Club
Played On 07/19/2019Very pleasantly surprised.
I have been driving by this course for years and just finally got around to trying it out. To be honest I was not expecting what I found. A tight, highly varied, and challenging course. It was in perfect condition, but I was told there was a city championship tournament being held the next day, so I assume they were peaking the condition. Plus it has been a very wet spring so pretty much all the coursed in the area are in excellent condition. I will be interested to see how it holds up as the dry summer heat sets in. This course offers of risk/reward situations. The par 5 first hole requires a long carry well placed drive, or a layup (forget trying to stay in the extremely narrow fairway between the hazard on the right and the sand trap and woods on the left. Not even Ben Hogan would be able to hit it with any consistency. There is pretty much serious trouble in play on almost every hole. The greens were very true, but had and interesting characteristic of being quite fast but with little break, however, my approach shots held well on these greens, so you could go after the pin, though there were a lot of challenging pin placements this day.
The only minus was the condition of many of the sand traps. Luckily the one I got in was well groomed, but I saw several that looked muddy, rocky and hard baked.
The layout is also conducive to someone who likes to walk the course, like I do. It is efficiently laid out.
This course will definitely go into my rotation of courses I regularly play. Very nice to find another very good, well priced public course in the area.
The Cliffs Resort
Played On 06/07/2019One of the Great Courses
I own property in the Resort and get 35 free rounds a year, so I get out whenever I can, but it is usually on 3-4 time a year. Of all the courses I have played around the country, this is one of the unforgettable ones. The views are spectacular and the course is challenging and interesting with many forced carries risk/reward approach shots. Even better the course, always in good shape, is under new management and is in the best condition ever. The wild fires a few years ago did affect the course, thinning out some of the trees on some of the holes, but it has recovered nicely.
This is a bucket list course, and I highly recommend every serious golfer in North, West, or Central Texas make an effort to play it. Also the resort has good accomodations and an excellent restaurant if you want to make a golf trip out of it.
