It's hot!

The greens were in good condition and most of most of the fairways were good too. The heat is hard on the fairways. I like the course.

Always fun

If you pick your times and temperatures you can pretty much play as fast as you want. I played as a single yesterday and finished in 2 1/2 hours. thanks to courteous 4somes letting me through. Few players when it gets very hot in the afternoons.

The carts were the highlite

I've played here many times and never do well. It's not an easy course with lots of slope in the greens but in spite of that it's enjoyable. What made this particularly special was that they have gotten new carts and the seats feel like they are made out of soft leather with bolsters to hold you in place bouncing around looking for your golf ball in the woods. I've never ridden in carts with seats this plush.

Another hot day at River Oaks

Played again ad joined up with a couple guys of my skill level that made the day pleasant even if very hot. No drinking water on the course and none I saw available at the check-in which in this heat is a must. That is the only negative I can think of. I've played the course since it opened and always enjoy it. I shot better than the high temperature today which is my current standard in this heat and watched the monstrous fire near Paradise blow up.

I shot the new standard for my age

The course isn't long from the white tees at 5374 yards and it's been described as not being a hard course but I find it challenging at my skill level. Being 77, the standard at my age is to shoot your age if your a good golfer. Since I'm not, I think the standard should be to shoot the high temperature for the day. Since it was 92 today, I'm happy.
I like the course and it's seldom crowded and backed up in the summer because of the heat..

Still fun after a layoff

The course was in good condition and the greens were above average. The course's Chat feature didn't work the two times I tried it and nobody at the pro shop answered the phone when I called.
That said the course was as good or better than I've ever seen it and I had fun after not playing for over a year. I've played here many times and enjoy the course as long as the pace of play is fast which it often is. If it's slow and it's as hot and windless as it can get in the summer, it can be brutal.

Excellent value

I live about 2 miles from it and have played it more than any course. It is an excellent course that isn't easy or boring because it's a 9 hole course. I've been told it's actually the hardest 9 hole course in Northern Calif.

One of my favorites

The Course can get tattered after a summer of a lot of play but I found it to be in excellent condition with the greens in great shape and fast. It seems like a simple course but a number better players than me find it difficult. They have trees there from all over that are hard for knowledgeable people to identify. Lots of beautiful Cork Oaks if you've never seen where your wine stopper comes from.

Hot and smokey

I've played here since it opened but not for a couple of years. The course is the best condition I've seen as far as being green however the rough is often mowed orchard grass that even Rory couldn't get his club through. The greens are beautiful but very soft and slooow. Feet leave depressions that makes the putting inconsistent. I'd guess they are either recovering from being plugged and haven't been cut to putting level or they are being left long to combat the heat. All of the water hazards on the back 9 are dry or are now grass depressions.

Poor scheduling of play

We played as a two some at noon and got there to find there was a foursome in front of us playing in a match play play off . I expected it to seem slow because of us being just two but their play was so slow that by the tee off at the 3rd hole an employee suggested we skip the next 3 holes and play from 6 on coming back to pick 3 thru 5 up at the end. He assured us we'd zip right thru then. Even with that cut off of 3 holes it was over 4 1/2 hours before we got back to where we could pick up the three we missed. We found that by then local high school teams were playing matches when the course should have been empty. We gave up and left.
Some of the course trees have been allowed to become over grown to the extent that using the second hole as example you can only see the pin location for your approach shot from a 50' circle 200 yds from the tee. Any other place and the green is invisible requiring a shot dropped vertically onto a narrow green hidden by tall willows.
I've played here many times since it opened but not in more than a year. I won't be back soon.

Good group of people play here

The most important thing I want to get across about Cherry Island is that although for some reason there are courses that seem to attract pretentious and rude jerks Cherry Island does not. I've played here a lot and almost without fail the people who play here are courteous and place having a good time without a lot of drama above playing like it's for the championship of the world. Make no mistake, there are good players at Cherry Island but they're free with a "hello" and "how's it going" instead of a scowl from Mr. Important as he plumb bobs his 3' putt. All the staff are friendly and the course is in very good shape considering the amount of play it gets

Bring golf balls

For me and the current state of my game, Dark Horse is a difficult course. There are traps, water, and tall grass just at the distances and locations to grab my ball. It's got a lot of elevation changes too. All that said, if I were playing better I would have found it more fun but the day I played it was too hard for me to enjoy. That's my problem and not the course's. It's well maintained and the carts are trouble free with GPS. I'll play it every time I can.

Tough day

I've played here probably 20 times and always enjoyed the course. This day the wind was blowing at 20 mph with gusts to over 30 mph so not a typical day. Slow play and lost balls were the rule but to be expected. I've had a number of issues with carts dying in the past but it looks like they may have solved that problem.
Pretty much exposed to any high winds and can be blistering hot in the summer but overall a challenging, fun course.

Unique course

This course is on Beale AFB and given the current world's conditions requires some extra effort to gain access. You have to show up an hour prior to tee time at the entrance gate with a photo ID for everyone in the car, proof of vehicle insurance and registration. You will then have to call the pro shop yourself so have their number handy to arrange an escort to the course. You will sign an authorization allowing them to search your vehicle as they see fit and I've seen another persons vehicle being tossed before they left the base.
After all that, it's not too much trouble and a great value when the course is in good shape. It isn't right now but they're working on it. Plan on a lot of wind in the spring and blistering heat in the summer but maybe you see Chuck Yeager driving through as he lives just up the hill toward Grass Valley. You'll also see a YF-12A fighter interceptor and the missile that they strapped on its back across on static display across from the club house. It was the precursor to the SR-71 Blackbird recon. aircraft.
As far as the course, big trees some water and the need for TLC but the exotic setting makes it worth it as TR-1 spy planes do touch and go practicelandings on the strip near the golf course.

Great pace of play

I've played here a lot since it opened and it rarely has slow play due to relatively high non discounted green fees. The course is a little rough right now which is to be expected coming out of the winter season but they take good care of it so it will green up nicely in the spring weather.
Lots of trees, sloping greens and fairways make it difficult based on the days pin placement. You can see why the LPGA had events in the past here.

This is to correct my previous review

I posted a very negative review of Sunset Whitney when in fact that review should have described my experience at Woodcreek . I played both courses a day apart and got them confused and said Sunset Whitney was a bad experience. It wasn't. The course and staff were excellent and pace of play was quick with no waiting. I apologize for listing Sunset Whitney by mistake instead of Woodcreek. I would recommend Sunset Whitney without reservation. Please disregard my previous review of this course and apply that review to Woodcreek instead.

Impossibly slow play

We played on a Sunday afternoon and it was so slow that by the third hole one group was teeing off while three others waited. The marshall made one pass of the course with no effect and left. It took us 2 hours and 40 minutes to play 9 holes which is almost 5 1/2 hour s for 18 holes. When we went into the pro shop to get a rain check/refund for 9 holes we were told that they don't give refunds and that we had to talk to the head pro about any accommodation. Two members of our group called and he's never called back. Although the pro shop personnel were pleasant the course pro did nothing for or about the slow play although like most courses they acknowledge they have it with a sign encouraging a faster pace in every cart. Not calling back is inexcusable. It's a city owned course but you have no way to contact anyone if they don't want to talk to you. I don't recommend this course as it's currently run even though I've played it a lot in the past. It was NEVER this jammed up.
