Greens are gone

Play here a few times a year. Played south course. They completely replaced the greens a couple years ago. Well, they lost them. They’re just painted dead grass. They’re hard so it takes high VERY spinny shots to stop on one. Even those shots leave very little ball mark and if you do fix it, it’s just dirt and crumbles (no root zone). Greens are the most important part of the course yet they’re still charging full rate and don’t say a word about it before ya head out. If you have another option, take it. At least for the rest of this season.

Meh

First, I will preface this by saying it was a rainy day, all day. Course had very little business. We saw three groups all day. That said, unless you discount my round, I should get the same level of service as any other day. Coming from the hospitality world (retired), this should be a standard. Here’s what I got:

No one greeted us until we got inside the golf shop. Check in was basic. Not noteworthy nor worthy of a compliment. She gave me a cart key and told me to take a cart in the breezeway. The first two rows had no windshield….on a rainy day. That’s not on her. Cart barn staff should have moved those equipped with them to the front. I went back in, asked for and got one with a windshield. Cart had a cooler and club cleaner. Always a good combo.

The course? Great tee boxes. Fun layout. However, lots of different grasses everywhere. At least it wasn’t dirt but it gives the image of a lessor course. Greens and bunkers were excellent.

Then came the 12th. I’m about to hit my approach and see at least 10-12 balls on the green. I get to the green and see ball marks and all the balls already on & around the green. I look across the water and see an employee with a club (another near him) in the cart barn doorway waiting for us to leave so they could continue hitting balls. I had to repair their ball marks and clear balls from the green in order to putt! In other words, the 12th green looked like a practice green.

Next, the return. No one to greet us at the end because they were too busy hitting onto a green from the cart barn. Then I ask if there is food and I’m told to go to restaurant and ask. Again, in the hospitality world, don’t send people to answer their questions. Shop staff is just chatting with no work….make a call.

Finally, the restaurant. Menu was as basic as it gets. Hot dog, burger, chicken strips, French dip (which they didn’t have), nachos, salads. Basic. Asked for hot dog with cheese, onions, relish. It came with a slice of cheese melted over it, including over the sides of bun. It’s literally how a 10 year old kid would do it.

Summary: course is great. Staff, even accounting for weather, needs improving. At least understand that just because it’s raining, guests deserve the same level of service as any other day since they paid the same as any other day. Not sure if I’ll be back.

DON'T GO

I don't know who's writing the kind reviews in the last month or two but they must be employees or owners. This was potentially the worst course I've played. Only Links at Summerly could compare but even that is improving fast. The positive: Staff was friendly...the end. Let me cover the general areas of a golf course. Fairways: covered with crawling weeds (native ground cover). Other areas were bare. Some lower areas (watershed areas) had extremely deep grass of 8 inches or more. Bunkers: I was in two bunkers during my round. The first was simply dirt. The second was also dirt but had an endless supply of rocks about half the size of the golf ball. Rough: The rough was like the fairways only MUCH longer. The rough made US Open rough seem short. Same weeds and long grass but much longer. Finally, the tee boxes: One was completely skinned bare. A few were tolerable (not good). Others liked like a busy driving range at closing time.

Bottom line, the course conditions make the course about a 145 slope and not in a good way. It's a joke. Word is that it was for sale and it looks like they quit spending money prior to sale. I only saw one greens worker and he was driving a tractor with no attachments. Golf shop is virtually empty. Everything stopped in 1985 here. Like I said in the headline...don't go.

Price says it all

If you are playing in the Temecula area and paying less than $80, you aren't getting great golf. This is no different. The range mats are WAY overdue for replacement. Until then, they need to at least steam clean them. No bag service. No ice in the coolers.

Star ratings 1-5 (5 being best):

Tee boxes - 2.(uneven, chewed up, weeds)
Fairways - 3 (weeds everywhere)
Greens 1 (diseased)
Hazards - 2 (disgusting)
Bunkers - 1 (mostly dirt)
Rough - There isn't any...just weeds

Don’t get a caddy

Got a forecaddie for a bday. It was like they got a cart mechanic and threw a bib on him. He didn’t know the range closed early. He didn’t know IF or where there was a practice bunker. The only information he gave was “you want to be on that side” and standard yardages he got from his range finder. He drank on the job when another golfer that was NOT paying for forecaddie service was buying. Stepped over green side wedges rather than picking them up. It was like paying for rustproofing on a new car when you live in Phoenix. Terrible caddy experience that affected the overall impression/experience. Too many good options in the Phoenix area. At TN prices, I expect more. Just go to Sunridge Canyon.

Only for nearby residents

First, if you have a 90 min frost delay, they need to either have a way to generate mass email or texts to let people know. Most courses have a superintendent that can actually foresee such potential. Get staff ready to make those calls or send those emails. We learned of the 90 min delay upon arrival after an hour drive to get there.

Next, they didn’t tell us before tee off there won’t be a beverage cart.

Additionally, When the delay prevented us from finishing, they just offered a raincheck.....we live an hour away. Bite the bullet and give a refund!!

Lastly, staff wouldn’t touch your bag. They move the carts around without gloves but won’t touch our bags. Everyone touches ball machine coins, cold water buckets for towels, doors without sanitizer next to it....but won’t touch your bag.

Management needs a serious makeover. As a hospitality professional, this could be soooo much more and demand a higher price. Unfortunately, it’s below average experience. Potential = 5 stars. Actual = 2 stars.

It’s gotten BAD

First, pro shop admitted they were knew and helped as best they could. No problem. Cart girl was great. Now for the rest.

1. Bag drop means leave your bag, park, then carry your bag the rest of the way and load it yourself.
2. Tee boxes were BAD. One par 3 was just solid dirt. Many were really uneven.
3. Greens were absurd. Like a cheap carpet. Cut too close and dried it out completely with many diseased areas. They were literally crunchy in some areas.
4. Good crap everywhere.
5. Upon cart return, no one greeting, wiping clubs...nothing. This was at 3p.
6. Bunkers weren’t even sand. Hundreds of rocks almost golf ball size in them.

I’ve played here in summer with better conditions. The “budget courses are running less than $50 and are in better condition. This place is now relying on the past and the resort name. Don’t think I’ll be back. Sad because the layout is fun/challenging.

Not my first time, but my last

Played two days after rain. There was still excessive water on the fairways. They need to improve drainage. Played elsewhere the day before with no problem. That wasn't really the main problem. The issue I had was that it was cart path only on the entire course but they don't tell you that on the phone. I called about 9:45 and ggot a 12:30 tee time. They should have said so on the phone. Risk losing my business for one round or risk losing it forever with poor consideration for the guest? They chose the latter. To make it worse, the include range balls but it’s tiny bucket of about 20 balls and the range is mediocre at bes. Great practice green, though. On course, the greens were mediocre. Lots of diseased spots coming out (more drainage issues?). It’s a budget course by Scottsdale standards which is u fortunate. Invest the money and bring it back to its former glory and compete with other Scottsdale courses.

Fair value

I’ve played twice. It is like they want to be a first class course but can’t get there. After round, no one offered to grab the bags. Before the round, we were ready and instead of sending us off as a two-some, made us wait for the group ahead to let their last guy show up. There was about 15 min between groups which meant by the third, we had to play through. It’s not rocket science.

Course was in great condition for time of year, except for a couple tee boxes.

The lack of an actual driving range and a practice green that is crowded with more than two makes it a show up and go kind of course. I’d still play again but only when they’re the better deal than other East valley courses.

Nice but....

This course is nice. However, three s were dreadful. They’ll be good and probably were not long ago. However, there was a LOT of sand on them. Even several large clumps of sand. We just adopted the two putt policy....everyone two-putted everything. Otherwise, it was a great course, good fairways and tee boxes. Driving range was mats only, also. Hate that. Still, for the price, it was a fair value.

Nice course

First time here. Great layout. Challenging but not punishing. Greens looked like carpet...excellent condition. Fairways were in great shape. Bunkers were better than most AZ courses that cost double....don’t worry about how I know that. Staff was great. The young English Raye was great with guests. Carts were even in great shape. Even the pace was excellent.
