Slipping

I’ve played this course maybe 50-100 times. It’s never been what I would call a spectacular course. But is has ALWAYS been of a consistent quality. The greens have always been in good shape (other than when aerated twice a year). Medium to medium-fast speed, rolling true. Maybe a few thin spots but decent fairways with good enough grass to hit off. You could RELY on this course being at least being of solid consistent quality. You could use this course as a baseline for your putting and adjust from there for other courses.

What I am seeing now concerns me. The greens are tamped down, hard as concrete, and super fast. This is not fast in a good way. It’s like they couldn’t afford to aerate, and didn’t cut for lack of rain, but rolled them anyway. There are “buds” of foreign grass all over them. There are brownish spots. One green actually had two holes about 1’ x 2’ filled with sand. Tiny “bunkers” on the green lol.

The fairways and tee boxes are worse. Several holes on the back nine have always been.a challenge keeping it on the fairway because of the slope. But a well placed proper shot would stick. Well now, often with no grass to hold the ball, forget it. 14 is a great example. 200 yard shot left center gets you a 100 yard approach form the “bowl” right center. Not anymore. It rolls right into the ditch. I’m not sure WHAT shot would hold that fairway now.

It’s sad. But the management of this course needs to decide if they want to maintain the quality they have had for YEARS, or devolve into a goat track.

Nice course poorly managed

Played on a Friday afternoon. It was full. I’ve played this course at least 50 times. First I want to say that the quality of the greens and maintenance on this course is always solid. Next I wanted to say that as long as I can remember, it’s been poorly managed. This Friday was no exception.

Front nine was great. It was slammed full, maybe a little slow, but moving consistently at a decent clip. We made the turn *without* stopping at the clubhouse. We get to the 10th tee and a there are two groups, the foursome in front of us and another twosome who jumped us playing out of one bag.

After waiting 10-15 minutes, with the 3rd backed up group now approaching the 10th tee, we called the clubhouse to see if they were aware. Not only were they, the explanation sounded like they actually moved this twosome from somewhere earlier in the front 9. I guess they complained? This little maneuver totally disrupted the flow of every group on the course and the back 9 played as a total logjam.

Solid course, crap management. Oh, btw, don’t plan on hitting a quick bucket on a late afternoon for practice. The range requires a tee time. Never heard of such.

Still the best in town for the money

Played the Run again on a Sunday. Although it was very crowded, and pace a little slow (4.5 hrs), the course once again showed why it’s the best value for the money if not in the entire ATL area, at least on the east side.

Greens were fast, smooth, and true. The bunkers, usually a weakness with this course, were in excellent shape. And of course Palmer’s brilliant risk reward layout shined as always.

This is not a course for the faint of heart. There are blind shots, forced carries, and places where the layout forces your hand on the type shot required. There are places above the hole where a 2-putt is near impossible. But if you know how to attack the course, and make precise shots, you can score well. This course bodes repeated playing to learn how to do that.

Fantastic value

Out of town in the Durham area and found this not so little gem. 27 holes, great layout, excellent condition, and absolutely stellar greens. The greens were as good as any I’ve played anywhere. Fast but not unputtable and rolled VERY true.

The bunkers were a little hard packed from recent rain, but had plenty of sand and were quite playable. The grainier sand In this area requires a little more agressive stroke.

The layout on the last few holes on the “Black” 9 was gorgeous. Very strong finishing par 5 skirting the lake.
The course is a little out of the way, but you’d be hard pressed to find a better sub $50 round ANYWHERE.

Conditions have slipped

I played Crystal Lake several years ago when it was one of the finest southside courses. We were excited to return, but somewhat disappointed in the deteriorated conditions. The range looked awful. Bunkers hard packed and devoid of sand. Little fairway grass. Tee boxes sporty. Greens patchy with sand from a recent punching. This is still a *stellar* layout, but not what it once was.

Still, all this could be somewhat excused If they’ve had a couple down years. But the lack of simple signage from hole to hole is inexcusable. It’s often a few hundred yards from one hole to the next, and we were completely lost more than once driving 1/8 mile only to arrive at a hole we’d already played, doubling back, and back again, unsure of where to go. Please guys, get a teenager with some 2x2s, a can of paint, and a few squares of plywood or something. The sequence of holes is COMPLETELY confusing.

It wouldn’t take much to make this a great course once again. Unfortunately, it’s just not right now.

Winter conditions but still a great layout

We've played Legacy before and it typically is in excellent shape. I would say this round it was not quite up to that level. But this is understandable due to the winter and the inconsistent temps and rain we've had. This is still a fine executive length course and a great layout..

The fairways were a little thin on the handful of Par 4s, tees a little bare, and greens maybe a little spongy and inconsistent. But the weather was perfect, the staff was great, and we actually played another nine because everyone was just hitting a groove after 18. Good times!

First class place

Really love this course. Excellent value for the money. Great layout. Challenging, but not brutal. Fast true greens. Spacious tee boxes which are important to navigate the angles on the many doglegs. Possibly the finest bunkers I’ve ever played out of. Perfect sand. Not too thick or too thin. Nice spacious clubhouse with fabulous hand made bloody marys at the bar. We drove an hour from Durham but it was WELL worth it.

Nice course could be even better with a few extras

Played Ashton Hills for the first time on a perfect day. Very interesting and challenging layout. The challenge mostly comes from the number of hills/doglegs and the speed of the very fast, true greens. But I really liked the design overall and that is always my FIRST criteria for rating a course.

The design has several of what I would call "memorable" holes. These are unique holes that you remember well the FIRST time you play a course. This includes a tough uphill par 3 across a lake with almost no bailout. Also a very cool but tough par 5 diagonally across a lake on the 2nd shot. They also have a beautiful par 4/short par 3 double-green combination on the back 9.

The course was in very good shape except the bunkers which were a little inconsistent. But with the recent crazy weather I'll grant them that. The greens were fast and true. I'd think about a 11-12 maybe.

Indoor bar/grill was closed probably due to covid. Outdoor snack shop was convenient, but the lack of availability of ice (other than to members) is not a good policy. Fortunately, I read this in reviews beforehand and brought my own. This is the South. PROVIDE ICE.

The only serious problem was the lack of sufficient course markings. They have no yardage book, no 150 posts, no cart GPS, and very sporadic sprinkler marking that only shows middle of the green. Keep in mind this is on a course with a lot of hills, blind shots, forced carries, and elevated multi-tiered greens. Fortunately the pro-shop was kind enough to loan me a spare flag "shooter" which helped some. But I've never been able to hold those things still enough to get them to work well.

Other than the markers issue I'd give it 5 stars. It's a bit of a drive for me, but I would play it again. It's one of those courses you really have to play a few times to know where your ball will end up because of the way the fairways "feed". It reminds me a bit of CC Gwinnett. A solid, challenging consistent course OTP Eastside.

A Classic still has it

Haven't played here in awhile. A very old school course, and for good reason. It was designed by THE Bobby Jones in 1933.

The course "eases you in". The first few holes are fairly easy. I actually backed up a tee from whites to blues. But it gets quite tough on the back 9 from the longer tees. The fairways get tighter. The sight lines tougher. Bigger doglegs. And more water.

These greens are as true as any I've played in Metro Atlanta. They were running quick, about 11+. The course was in very good shape despite a lot of recent rains. A few holes were cart path.

The staff was great. It was Super Bowl Sunday and I got out early so pace was fabulous, less than 3 hours. For the money hard to beat. I'll be back.

Simply one of the best you can play in GA

Perfect day on a stellar course. Greens running true and very fast. Course conditions excellent. With the $37 Senior Rate it's almost impossible to beat. The only negative is the pace of play. It was a 5 hour round. But when the track is this nice, you don't care as much.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write your kind review. We are sorry the pace of play was not where it should have been the day you played. We are blessed with a lot of play on our course, but that can lead to slower playing conditions on the busiest days. We are thankful that you consider our senior rate a great value, even with the slow play. We will continue to do our best to keep our rounds to 4.5 hours or less.

One of NW Georgia's Gems

There aren't many courses I'd drive almost two hours to play. The price and distance from Atlanta make this a tough sell, but if you can get a good rate, it's well worth it.
The layout is beautiful, through winding woods in a very remote setting. I thought the GPS had steered me wrong the first time I went. It's truly a beautiful course in an isolated, pastoral setting.
This is a tough track. And when the greens are running 12-13 like this week it's even tougher. They are smooth as silk and putt true though. I never thought I'd say this as much as I like to shape the ball, but I could do with one or two less doglegs. It's like Bubba Watson's wheelhouse out there.

Being an actual resort, the amenities are very nice, but not cheap. It's weird having the pro shop across the street from the actual course, but there's a nice bar/grill at the turn. The staff is very accommodating and not snooty at all for such a nice place. They seem genuinely glad you are visiting.

I'll be back. Maybe I'll let someone else drive next time. But if you live on the I-75 corridor, and love golf, you simply HAVE to play this course at least once.

Much improved

I can't say enough about what Kenny and the staff have done to improve this course. What used to be a $20 (if that) hacker goat trail has turned into one of the best deals on the east side. The price is increased some but it's still reasonable and well worth it.
The problem with Southland has never been the layout. It's a challenging track with some gorgeous scenic holes. Very few houses in play. The conditions however have been the downfall.
But now we have new carts, a repaved path (it used to be so rough that you could puncture a tire). The greens are now in exceptional shape, smooth, true, and putting at about a 10 stimp. Tee boxes and fairways have also improved.
A cart attendant and/or decent halfway house is really the last step needed to make Southland an excellent golf experience. Now that the secret is out (and the price up) at Cherokee Run, Southland is filling the gap nicely with the opportunity for a less crowded and expensive round.

Bigger and badder than ever

One of the toughest tracks in the state is back to its old brutal glory. With greens running 12+, there are certain "death spots" that you can't put the ball if you intend to par.

From a maintenance standpoint the course is in the best shape I've ever seen it. Lush zoysia fairways make approaches like hitting off carpet, and the new Bermuda greens run very true and are holding shots fairly well considering the speed. Even the bunkers (which was always a weakness with this course) are in pristeen shape.

If you've never played this Palmer gem, you need to try it. But pick a day when you feel very confident in your game. You'll need every shot you've got and then some.
