Gilroy Golf Course
Played On 03/18/2023I won’t be back
Well, I’m glad to have this course checked off my list.
Let’s make a list of what sucked:
- The course was practically a swamp. Water was squishing up around my shoes walking on some of the greens.
- The guy working in the prop shop was actively cursing about another customer when I walked in. Easily the least friendly golf course employee I’ve ever run into, and that’s saying a lot.
- Even if it would have been dry, conditions were garbage. The layout and routing sucks, and only one or two holes were mildly interesting.
I paid for 18 but left after 9. I was ready to leave after 6, but couldn’t will myself to slosh back to my car from the furthest part of the property. I won’t be back.
Deep Cliff Golf Course
Played On 04/27/2022Everything was in great condition except the tee boxes. They could use some leveling and TLC. It was hard to find a flat spot to tee off on almost every hole.
Dragonfly Golf Club
Played On 04/16/2022I'll be back!
I played this course for the first time on a wet, windy Saturday morning. Our round took about 4.5 hours due to a fairly slow set of foursomes in front of us. They had punched the greens 4 or 5 days before we played, so I felt like we got the worst version of them. I can see how fun these greens would be once they've bounced back. This course is long, but pretty wide open. The layout was super interesting, and at no point did I feel "golf deja vu". The greens are all protected by bunkers, but they're big enough to give you a fair target. This course's main defense is the wind. It felt like we only tee'd off once or twice with the wind helping us. Every shot was a challenge, but a fun one at that. I'll definitely be back to play here again!
PS- the bacon breakfast burrito was an all-timer. 5 stars just for that.
Spring Valley Golf Course
Played On 01/16/2021Average Muni Course
My first time playing this course, and I wasn’t overly disappointed. I guess my expectations were a little higher because of the location in the foothills. There are a few interesting holes with elevation change or forced carries, but overall it’s a very uninteresting design. Very forgiving, which is nice. The biggest problem with the condition were the greens. They were quite shaggy, and very bumpy. My putts rarely stayed on line, and the speed was inconsistent from one hole to the next. I wasn’t expecting striped fairways and resort sand in the bunkers, but the greens deserve more attention.
Overall, I wouldn’t pay top dollar to play here again, but it’s not a bad course if you can get a cheap twilight tee time like I did.
Los Lagos Golf Course
Played On 12/30/2020Slow pace for an early tee time
Not my first round at Los Lagos, and I enjoyed the course as much as I have in the past. The only drawbacks this time around were the bare patches in many of the fairways, and the very slow pace. I tee'd off at 7:44am with two other players, and we arrived at the second hole with one group waiting to tee off, and a second on the green. The rest of the round proceeded like this. Three groups on almost every hole, waiting in between almost every shot. I'm not sure how this happened so early in the day, and I never once saw a ranger on the course.
Seascape Golf Club
Played On 12/23/2020Great layout and diabolical greens
I enjoy playing this course for a variety of reasons. The quiet, serene setting, interesting layout, and affordable prices make this course one to recommend. With that being said, these small, severely sloped greens will absolutely thrash you if you can’t stay below the hole. Any downhill chips will almost certainly end up rolling off the green entirely, and downhill putts were guaranteed to roll 10-15 ft past the flag if you missed. I honestly had a hard time marking my ball because it wouldn’t stop rolling on most of the greens. They weren’t exceptionally fast, but the slope is crazy on most of these. It makes scoring well almost impossible for a below average golfer like myself, but I still enjoy it.
Sunken Gardens Golf Course
Played On 11/24/2020Below Average
I would rank this course below both Pruneridge and Blackberry, and maybe tied with Rancho del Pueblo. The condition of greens 1, 2, and 9 were horrendous, but the rest were fine. The tee boxes were all more sand than grass. I enjoyed the overall layout, and it’s not a bad deal for $20, but the conditions have a long way to go before I would recommend it over any of the other short courses in the area.
Los Lagos Golf Course
Played On 10/22/2020Fun short course
Don’t let the yardage fool you, this course is a fun challenge for a mediocre golfer. Large, undulating greens force you to pick your spots on your approach, and the rolling fairways rarely give you a perfect lie. It’s a long walk, crisscrossing coyote creek multiple times, so pay for the cart if you aren’t up for some exercise.
Coyote Creek Golf Club - The Valley Course
Played On 08/05/2020Won't be back for a while...
I've played the Valley course a half dozen times in the last year, and have always enjoyed the course. I last played it in June, and was disappointed in the 4.5 hour round, despite the good course condition and reasonable price ($35). However, I left after 9 holes during my most recent round after it took 2.5 hours. Waiting on every tee box, standing in every fairway, without a marshal in sight. I did see the cart girl about 5 times, so maybe they're more concerned with beer sales than pace of play. I had been considering a membership here, but I won't be paying money to stand around in the sun at Coyote Creek anytime soon.
Pruneridge Golf Course
Played On 05/21/2020Great value, great conditions
The course was in great condition. Smooth greens, lush tee-boxes and fairways. A little slow, but good value for $16!
DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge
Played On 11/01/2019Good course, friendly staff
The course was in good condition, and although I was playing behind two foursomes as a single, the pace was good. The Marshall even offered to move me through the two groups in front of me at about the 8th hole. Very friendly and helpful staff!
The course is pretty tight (high handicap standards) and strategy forces you to layup on many of the par 4s. Overall, a fun and challenging course. It felt like a narrower Seascape, with smaller greens.
Mission Hills of Hayward Golf Course
Played On 08/01/2019Great Value, Great Conditions
The greens are immaculate, the fairways are tight, and the hazards provide enough of a challenge to keep this short 9 hole course interesting. My only complaint is the bunkers. The sand is hard packed, and was wet when I played (early in the AM).
There is a bit of excessive walking, and it’s easy to miss a few holes if you don’t watch out for the signs, but the cart paths are in great condition, so it’s not a hike.
All in all, $10 was an absolute steal for the quality that Mission Hills offers. I look forward to playing again soon!
Dublin Ranch Golf Course
Played On 07/25/2019Great value
Dublin Ranch is a great course that tests your iron game, with a few intriguing par 4s and 5s to keep things interesting. The greens are very receptive, the fairways are in good condition, cart paths are immaculate, and the staff is very friendly.
