Great for beginners and intermediates

The course is a good place close to home. A go to place to have a little work on your game. The course was fairly maintained with the exception of the sand traps. Sand traps were like beds of crusty concrete and need some attention. I do not recall any water hazards. There is water on the course but nothing that is really in play. The layout seems to be that they made the best of what they had to work with. The tee boxes are very close to the previous green in such a manner you would want to ensure both the green and tee box clears before hitting your approach shot. I was there on an off day so we had the place to ourselves. This course has the rolling hills and bends you would expect in WV. I really enjoyed this place as somewhere close to work on my golf. It appears this place used to be much more in the past and was semi-private at one time. The course is fully public to my understanding now. They may put a little more care into the fairways and traps approaching hosted events. This was only my first visit and plan to visit quite a bit more in the future. I could see this course being a little trying on a less patient person if it were busy due to the layout being tight at the green and following tee boxes. Despite the tight layout the fairways are generous and each separated by a line of trees. I like the separation so that each hole doesn't visually roll into the next. Met some nice people there and that always helps

Memorable 15th Par 3

The course was in good condition for comparison of courses in the area. Most courses in the area are are average to good condition. Only a handful in the state are excellent. The course lost a lot of trees due to a storm which is unfortunate but the crews were working hard to clean up. West Virginia has had a challenging 2016 in regards to weather. This course is near Beckley, WV which is pretty much a town on top of the mountains as is this course. With that sais you can expect the natural beauty that West Virginia offers. The layout was pretty good for the area. The highlight for me was the the 15th Par 3 in which you are overlooking some rock cliffs up top and hit onto a green quite a ways down. A very fun hole and very scenic. Your cart is going to need a good set of brakes leaving the tee box to the downhill path leading to the green. It was however unfortunate that they do not accept the WVGA vip card. I do look forward to revisiting this course.

Favorite Course I've ever played so far

There is tons of great info you can research and read about this course's history and layout. I will keep it simple and say the upkeep was phenomenal compared to what I am used to in West Virginia. I would say this course is immaculate under most comparisons. The staff was very nice and helpful with the exception of the Pro-shop where I checked in. The man behind the counter barely took the time to acknowledge my existence as he was in conversations with another man who was also behind the counter (not a customer). I had already paid online so I was basically checking in to see where to get started. After he spoke to me he basically said there was no tee time crunch for the afternoon and to tee off at my leisure. He immediately began right back into conversation with what might have been a co-worker or friend. I wasn't finished asking for information before he had already turned is back on me in mid conversation. I had to force him yet again after being patient near the desk to acknowledge me. I did not know where to start or even that the course had a starter. Courses in my home area do not typically have starters. At this point I just wanted a score card and a pencil. Once I had inconvenienced him for the info I needed I was on my way to an amazing course. The bag drop employees and the starter were very friendly. There was wildlife on the course every where. I found myself stopping for a moment to take in the scenery and to appreciate all the hard work on the grounds. This is a must course if you're in the area. Can not wait to go back.
