Arlington Lakes Golf Club
Played On 08/12/2018Excellent course for honing irons & wedges
Not the most glamorous or challenging course, but ALGC keeps it in tip top condition. Immaculate greens and fairways
Lots of very straight fairways, but the omnipresent lakes and bunkers paired with the relatively narrow fairways force you to think about shot selection in ways that wide open larger courses don't. I rarely used my driver here, opting to go with 3-wood on a few, and 4 or 5 iron on most of the rest of the tee shots except for the 6(!) par-3's.
I recommend this course for anyone looking to improve their iron and wedge play, myself very much included. The price is very fair. I look forward to returning to this course.
Other notes: saw the cart girl 4 or 5 times throughout the 4 hr round which was great. There is some kind of army base that borders the course, so the US Government is not the owner of several of me and my friends' golf balls.
Chick Evans Golf Course
Played On 08/20/2016Morning storms lead to wet, but lightning fast round.
The thunderstorms in the hours before my tee time made me nervous about a cancellation, but the course remained open, and it was WIDE open. There was a twosome ahead of us that we lost after the 3rd hole, and a huge group behind us that our 3-some lost after the 2nd hole. So we essentially had the place to ourselves and we absolutely flew through this beautiful woodland course, shooting over a river multiple times with well-designed, different holes following every tee-box.
Beverage cart girl was very nice and we saw her 3 or 4 times during the round.
The course was surprisingly dry after intense thunderstorms made the course very wet in the hour right before our tee time, but after the first 5 or so holes, it wasn't an issue anymore. Saw a family of deer on the 8th hole.
Will absolutely 100% play again many times. Loved it.
Village Green Country Club
Played On 08/07/2016Nice little course, fun but with flaws.
Friendly staff accommodating of our friend who drove to the wrong course and made us miss our tee time. The pace of play was pretty bad. At one point, there were 5 groups on 2 holes. For all 18 holes, we had to wait on at least 1 group ahead of us and for the front 9, there was always someone waiting on us to finish.
That being said, I really enjoyed the layout of the course. Lots of different hazards and hole designs requiring tee shots with a variety of clubs. A personal point of pride: I came within 25 yards of driving the green on 18. The group ahead of me gave me a nice nod of approval when I got to my ball, and felt good to close my round with that.
Lots of unrepaired ball marks on the greens, but the fairways were in excellent condition. Tee-boxes could use some work too, but we are also 4 months into the golf season, so that's par for the course.
Spring Valley Country Club
Played On 08/06/2016Great value.
Probably my 5th time playing this one overall. The course is pretty standard as far as layout and hole design goes. Only a few water-hazards and very few opportunities to lose balls. Beautiful weather. Very much a drive-pitch-putt course for anyone further along in their golf career than a beginner. Unfortunately, I am still pretty bad, so my long drives don't help me that much.
No cart attendant. Beer is cheap at the clubhouse though for beforehand and a the turn. Friendly clubhouse staff and clubhouse dog.
My lakehouse is literally 5 minutes away and for the price ($28 w/cart), this makes for a very enjoyable.weekend afternoon.
Canal Shores Golf Course
Played On 07/24/2016Interesting way of fitting a course into a urban area
Chick Evans was closed due to heavy rain the night before, so in a pinch we decided to try this one out. The conditions were fair that day because of the rain, but definitely manageable. But man, was it HOT AND HUMID that day.
I have to applaud the architect for managing to fit a full 18-hole course into the area, because it was probably not easy at all. The entire course is built along North Shore Channel (Chicago River) with lots of straight forward holes. You take a tee shot over the river twice which is neat. Pretty good beginner course and good for the value.
Billy Caldwell Golf Course
Played On 07/18/2016Fast, Straightforward.
Second time playing. Decided to do a quick 9 after work. Started at 5:22 and finished around 7:15. Cant ask for better pace of play than that. Friendly staff. The course is in fantastic shape, even after the heavy rain that we had the day before.
Managed to drive the ball clear over the lake on hole 5!
Indian Boundary Golf Course
Played On 07/10/2016Great value, excellent conditions, close to home.
First time golfing this one. Really impressed with the course design and course conditions. A number of challenging holes throughout and good, short(ish) par-5's on the back 9. Came within 3 inches of an eagle on 17(?). Probably my favorite (so far) of the forest preserve courses.
Walnut Greens Golf Course
Played On 06/05/2016Nice little par 3
Excellent course conditions. Fantastic looking course too. If you are looking to strengthen your iron play or just want to shake the rust off before going out on a full length course, this is a great place to go.
We are happy to hear you had an awesome time at Billy Caldwell! Our superintendent works extremely hard to make sure the course is in top notch condition, especially after the heavy rain fall that we recently received, so we are glad to hear you had an enjoyable experience. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
