Short but Challenging

Played for 1st time, was pleasantly surprised with overall conditions. There were available early AM weekday tee times. Staff was very friendly.
Course has some setups which require you to play more than once. Hidden water on 2nd hole as an example. Not an overly long course but plenty of challenges to compensate for lack of length.
I will play this course again.

A True Gem & A Must Play

I played during a member / guest event.

The course was swamped under by 3 feet of water from Hurricane Sandy. The 18th hole had a boat wash up on it. I cannot express in words how good the course now looks after the storm. A true compliment to the superintendent.

The course is challenging and has water and wind on play on most holes. The greens are in excellent condition.

Everyone should try and play this course. I have played many courses on LI and Lawrence is second to none.

Blue is Better than Red

I am a local county resident. I have played the Blue many times. Most of the local "experts" run to go play the Red course. Why? I do not know! The Blue as well as the White are designed with much more character. The Red for the most part is fairly straight holes. The Blue would be a true gem if the course had 300 more yards. Most greens are elevated and surrounded by bunkers. People may complain the greens are slow, but remember this is a county facility with many daily rounds. Ultra fast greens would burn out under the number of rounds.

If you play, try to play early or during the week. I agree that mid-morning weekend rounds can be a 6 hour horror regardless of the course at Eisenhower.

For the price as a county resident, well worth the money, especially if you are willing to walk.

The Woods over the Links

I played this course early on a Friday morning. We went out as a twosome and played in 3.5 hours. I play this course at least once a year and it never disappoints.

The staff is friendly and attentive. Carts are ready and clean. One downside is driving range is across the road.

The course design/layout is great. A good mix of doglegs, straight, long, short, uphill and downhill holes. Water is in play on some of the holes other holes have tress overhanging near greens or on corner of approach shots BUT it is called the WOODS! If you are not straight, don't break out that new sleeve of balls.

In my opinion, this course has more character than its older sibling across the road. It is a must play at least once a year. I wish it was closer to home.

Tallgrass but very Sandy

I have played Tallgrass over the last 5 years. Unfortunately, the course has slipped in its conditioning.

For this last round, the course was clearly aerated and we were charged full price. Nor were we told the course was aerated.

The tee boxes were not in great shape and the greens were extremely sandy to the point of almost unplayable.

It is a shame because the course layout is a true links type layout with fescue and the ability to play the ball down onto the greens. A course type not readily available on LI. The wind does come into play and the wind does usually blow.

The 5th hole, once a great short par 4, has now been shortened due to local resident complaints into a 190 yard par 3 to a green which will not hold long iron to hybrid shots.

The course has gone from a once a month play to maybe a once a year play. Also, tee times do not start until 7am even when sun up is a 5am during certain months of the year. I guess Tallgrass has not embraced the PlayFast / Play Early programs. You have to assume Tallgrass can afford to leave those early tee time revenues out there.

I wish Tallgrass well and hope they return to what they once were.

Forest Park Golf Course

Forest Park or Forest Bog

I played on a Tuesday morning around 9am. The starter was nice and fit me in without a reservation. Now, I know why! It had rained a little the prior night. Not a hurricane but some rain. Remember, the area just came off a week of 95+ degree heat. There was standing water in fairways. The fairways were damp and thin to the point of almost having no grass.
The pace of play was horrible given it was a Tuesday morning. I played 16 holes in 4.5 hours; unacceptable, given the course is extremely short and not overly difficult.

I paid $60 for green fees and a cart for a weekday round. If you can drive, there are FAR MORE options for cheaper prices and a better golf experience a little further out in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

For the price and quality, Forest Park is overpriced. My hope is management uses the money to reinvest into the course's drainage facilities

If only the staff cared......

I had a 6:20am tee time. Arrived at course at 6am and proceeded to pro shop, only to find out from starter that pro shop doesn't open until 6:30am. Someone explain to me how you book 6:20am tee times and "open" at 6:30am! In addition, the starter let a single go out before the shop opened because he needed to be somewhere. Don't we all? Once open, the women behind the counter was just plain rude.

If the staff was half as nice as the course layout and condition, this would always be a must play. Once we teed off, we played in under 4 hours. It is a must to play early, as we walked off 18, there were 3 groups waiting to tee of on 1st tee.

I recommend this course because of the layout and conditions and NOT because of the staff.
