El Rio Golf Club
Played On 02/13/2024Hello? Hello? Anyone there?
I booked through GolfNow. I arrived 25 minutes before my tee time and went to the counter to check in. The “pro” was facing me and but had his head bent down looking at a computer screen. He knew I was there but he never looked up. I waited 3 minutes before saying I was there to check in. He gruffly told me to sit down and wait as they didn’t have carts. I saw he was cordial to people he knew, and treated everyone else like crap. The course is just OK. In decent shape. The front 9 has the better layout by far. The best way to characterize the back 9 is that they ran out of room. The holes are ridiculously close to one another. I figure El Rio just don’t care about customer service since there aren’t many courses around at their daily fee level. If I knew yesterday what I know now, I’d skip playing rather than pay them my green fee.
Gulf Shores Golf Club
Played On 02/22/2023A good challenge
I have a 9 index. This was my first round in 3 months.
The course was challenging. The fairways were generous on most holes, however there are quite a few ponds that will capture errant shots. The green complexes were more difficult than average. Most were elevated and made up and downs almost impossible if you short sided yourself. The course itself was in good condition. I think it gets very heavy play over the winter and spring months. All in all, a pleasant experience.
The Links at Heartland Crossing
Played On 05/08/2018It’s a ROUGH go
Generally like this course. Challenging and interesting layout. The rough however is way too long. Even just off the fairway it is quite deep. I lost 3 drives I had a good line on and if I had needed to play more quickly I would have lost double that number. 4-5 inch rough is overkill in my opinion.
Deer Creek Golf Club
Played On 08/27/2016Better than I remembered
Third time I played this course in last three years. The first things people will say about DC are usually not complimentary: Adjoining fairways increase the risk of getting hit by a ball and a couple of funky hole layouts. There is some truth to both comments, however I think it's a smokescreen. It's a challenging course with some tight fairways you can't afford to miss. The adjoining fairways are not that tight....it's the penalty for missing them that annoys people. Hole #2 should be redesigned. Either move the tee up so the water can be cleared from the tee or move it back and create a par 5. As it stands, a good tee shot ends up in the water. If short, you are looking at 200 yds uphill to the green. It is an annoying hole. Finally, it would be better if a first time player could play with someone who has played the course to help with where to hit your drive (#1 for instance), club selection (#4 for instance) and, in several cases, finding your way to the next tee. Course conditions were very good and I enjoyed my round.

Heartland is a very good course. A couple of caveats: You need to play the correct set of tees based on your ability. Not doing so will make your round less enjoyable than at other courses. Secondly, there are many sand traps that come into play and it would be unusual for most players not to hit a few of them. One of my friends calls it the Sahara....it is not that bad...however they can be steep and challenging. If you have big issues with sand, you might think twice. Having said this, it is a very interesting and fair course. Conditions are very good. Greens had just been sanded and yet they were very good considering.
Kissimmee Bay Country Club
Played On 01/16/2015Nice course in Kissimmee
This is moderately challenging course. Water on many holes however not unplayable for the high handicapper. Fairways were generous enough and the greens rolled pretty true. I'd certainly play it again.
Bear Slide Golf Club
Played On 09/08/2014Worth the hike
Shortly after moving to the Indy area last year, I was told that Bear Slide was one of the public courses that I should play. It is 70 minutes away but finally made it up there. With a 7 index I played the blue 6500 yd tees. A good choice. Fairways are generous with few exceptions. The course defenses are around the greens, ie if you miss one it is difficult to get up and down. Most par 3's are challenging due to small greens and/or water. Par 5's are quite manageable if you hit a reasonable drive. As far as staff, I arrived an hour early and said I'd like to tee off early if I could. I was told I needed to wait until my tee time. So I practiced for an hour and watched one foursome tee off during that time. Desk pro seemed like a "just the facts" kind of guy. So I rated staff as average at best. Course was in good shape except for 16 green which is in low area and was not up to par. Overall, I enjoyed the round and would recommend the course. There are too many other good courses closer to my home to expect I'll get there very often.
Golf Club of Indiana
Played On 08/13/2014Pays to be straight and good in bunkers
Last played this course 23 years ago while marshalling PGA that John Daly won at Crooked Stick. Grown up since then. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Quite challenging for 7 index at 6500 yards. Water and bunkers are strategically placed which compensates for very little elevation change. I hit 9 bunkers which is quite unusual for me. Greenside bunkers are large and tend to extend further back along the sides of the greens than appear from the tees. Sand was not perfect but playable.
Saddlebrook Golf Club
Played On 08/06/2014Good value
First time I played course. Short course that compensates by having water in play on most holes and a few tricky greens. Other than 2 greens on the back that were diseased, course was in good condition.
The Fort Golf Resort
Played On 11/08/2013Challenging yet playable
Played late in the season and yet it was quite clear that the course is still being well cared for. Enjoyed my round. Almost no water on course and fairways are reasonably wide enough to hit. A lot of traps protect frequently elevated greens. Greens run quite true. In summary, certainly worth the discounted price I paid through GolNow.
West Chase Golf Club
Played On 10/11/2013Good but not memorable
The course is just OK. The greens are only fair......don't roll fast nor as true as they should. Rough is quite ragged. My complaint on this day was the pace of play. It wasn't all that busy and it still took close to 5 hours. No course marshal the times I've played it. Low budget operation perhaps?
The Trophy Club
Played On 10/8/2013Tough but fair
I am new to the area. Course was recommended to me by several players when I asked what courses I should play. It did not disappoint. I played at 6700 yard tees The fairways are pretty generous and there is a decent amount of rough so the long grass only catches really bad shots. As expected, course is more challenging on approach shots and once on large undulating greens. There's a nice mixture of tough and easier holes. Greens had been aerated in past week however were in very good condition.
