Nottingham City Golf Club
Played On 05/04/2023Great value for money.
Parkland, scenic, relatively flat and easy walking. Tree lined but wide fairways. Soggy in parts after rain. A work in progress but course maintenance work much in evidence. Would benefit from more definition of fairways, improved greens (slow) and signage. Relatively short course but a good mix of holes - numbers 15, 16 and 17 providing a stern test. Despite drawbacks course is much improved and well worth support. At a Golf Now green fee of £10 to £12 it is deserving of the accolade of "best value for money" course around and well worth a visit.
Bulwell Forest Golf Club
Played On 05/07/2019All year round, good value course.
A course that can be played year-round and comes into its own, in particular, when other courses are weather-affected.
The recent dry spell had impacted some fairways that were dry and patchy in parts. However, despite the absence of a sprinkler system clearly a lot of work had gone into maintaining the greens in superb condition.
The course is fairly easy walking despite a couple of uphill stretches and has a decent mix of holes; three of the (4) par threes being long and quite challenging.
Next door to a housing estate and frequented by dog walkers but not usually problematic; only occasionally when kids are off school and use the course as a cycle track. Great value for money.

Played On 04/10/2019Hidden gem!
A quirky, 10 hole moorland course off the beaten track with 8 holes being played twice from different tees. The course provides a true test and contains a variety of holes that necessitate straight hitting as the rough can be unforgiving. New ownership has resulted in an upgrade of off-course facilities particularly, and on-course improvements with lush fairways and fairly quick, true greens. Spectacular views are provided from the top of the course over Chesterfield and well beyond. Well worth a visit.

Played On 01/22/2019Best winter value.
Warm welcome in the pro shop on a cold day. Enabled to start before booked tee time; a plus in light of anticipated adverse weather forecast for later.
Course suffers a bit because of its position near a housing estate and is crossed by dog walkers, pedestrians and cyclists. Occasionally, idiots on motor bikes have been known to cut up a green or two. That said, the course is well maintained and greens invariably in excellent order and run true. Underfoot conditions allow play the whole year round and the Club accommodates golfers from near and far who are unable to get on their own courses or are constrained by having to play off fairway mats or on temporary greens. This serves to make Bulwell one of the best all year round courses cross Notts and Derby. There is also a warm welcome in the club house.

Municipal course but well looked after. Despite the dry spell the fairways were in good condition and the greens almost pristine. The course is fairly easy walking albeit there are a couple of quite severe inclines. Relatively short with only one par 5 but with a nice mix of holes. Very picturesque; the view back down from the 11th green particularly is superb. A pay and play course that was charging only £10 a round any time, any day and represents arguably the best value for money golf in the county. The only real downside was that the 19th hole was closed as we finished our round at 3.30 but there is a watering hole nearby at the Bridge Inn, Duffield where a pint slips down very well at an outside table by the river.

Played On 06/19/2018Gone downhill
A quirky heathland course that has 10 holes, eight of which are played twice. Played here a couple of times before and enjoyed the experience. However, since last visiting, the course has been taken over by South Chesterfield Golf Club and has gone downhill due to an apparent lack of care? Fairways were in good condition but previous pristine greens had been hollow tined and heavily sanded to cover bare patches that made the experience disappointing. The club house was closed on departure and a trip to nearby Ashover was the 19th hole alternative.

Played On 11/29/2017Great autumn/winter course.
Course fully open using proper tees and greens and in excellent condition throughout reflecting the time of year and recent weather. Only downside was the pace of play. To some extent the course suffers from its own popularity and the prospect of our two ball being delayed behind a number of four balls ahead resulted in the pro making the helpful suggestion that we might prefer to play the front nine twice, which whilst not ideal we did. As a result, we never saw another golfer after hole nine and flew around at the second time af asking.

Played On 11/22/2017All weather course.
Despite wet conditions during the early part of the week, the course was in excellent condition underfoot. A stiff breeze on the day resulted in leaves being blown across fairways but ground staff were tackling, albeit fighting something of a losing battle. The course provides a decent test with a variety of holes, is relatively short and easy enough walking. The greens were in good nick. The popularity of the course and all seasons play has seen a price increase but a promotional voucher offset the cost and for just £10 provided superb value on the day. Comfortable bar area although limited choice of beers. Staff mainly sociable.

Played On 11/21/2017Value-for-money course.
Although the weather was fine, the course had suffered from earlier rainfall and was heavy underfoot. Driving mats were in use but facilitated the use of tees. Leaves were in abundance and made ball finding problematical on many fairways. Greens were in good condition. The course provides for a good test in normal circumstances. The terrain is undulating and there is plenty of variety of holes. Ordinarily provides very good value for money at a competitive price point. Practice facilities available and comfortable club house providing a selection of beers and food.

Played On 11/14/2017Great autumn/winter course.
Excellent drainage provides for all-year round golf. Fairly easy walking but variety of holes provides for a decent test. Condition leads to popularity but pace of play reasonable on the day. Fairways relatively dry despite recent rain and greens in very good condition. Voucher provided for reduction in green fee which has been hiked since last year but price not unreasonable relative to competition. Warm welcome by pro and comfortable bar area.

Played On 11/08/2017Great autumn/winter course.
Despite heavy rain the previous day the course is quick drying and conditions were excellent underfoot. The course is easy walking and relatively short and for around a tenner represents excellent value for money; in particular over the autumn/winter months when other courses in the area are having to resort to temporary greens and fairway mats. A public footpath runs through the course and dog walkers can be a bit of a nuisance, but the fairways and greens especially are kept in really good nick. Comfortable bar area and welcoming pro staff.
South Chesterfield Golf Club
Played On 11/01/2017Recent price reduction resulted in better value for money than through the summer playing season. Course in reasonable condition albeit greens had been the subject of recent hollow tining that made putting a bit of a lottery. Easy walking, fairly short course, decent mix of holes containing two par 5s and five par 3s. Warm welcome and comfortable bar area. Practice facilities include a driving range, small putting green and bunker area.

Played On 09/13/2017Value for money.
Relatively short, easy walking course. Nice variety of holes including one short and three longish par 3s. Fairways in good shape and well-maintained greens. A public footpath crosses the course and provides for significant footfall at certain times of the day. The beauty is that this is an all year round course that drains extremely well and is dry underfoot; also providing excellent value for money at around £10 per player.
Springwater Golf Club
Played On 08/01/2017Fair challenge.
Have played this course numerous times before and one of favourite venues. However, due to price hike this was the first outing in almost a year and the result of having a promotional voucher to offset cost. The variety of holes and condition makes this an excellent challenge. Despite the recent rain underfoot conditions were excellent and fairways and greens well manicured. the course was busier than on previous occasions and a 4-ball in front made progress somewhat laboured although completion was in 4 hours. First class welcome in the pro shop and practice facilities are good; also food and beverages in the club house. Although the course is some distance away, it would be towards the top of the play list if it were closer to home and returned to its previous competitive price point.

Played On 03/29/2017Hidden gem
The course is off the beaten track down a narrow road and is best described as quirky! There is an honesty box for green fees and a visitors' book to sign inside the clubhouse. Saw no-one connected with the Club beforehand and only green keepers on course. Despite the wet weather, proper greens were in play and in excellent condition although expectation was to play off fairway mats; alternatively to do without from light rough. There are just 10 holes; 8 are played twice and the other 2 just once. Despite this, holes represent a good mix and the views over Chesterfield and beyond are stunning. There was no-one manning the 19th hole but despite its obvious limitations this course is a hidden gem and well worth a visit; certainly we will be going back - again and again!
Allestree Park Golf Club
Played On 03/17/2017Value-for-money course.
Played the course after a period of wet weather but found conditions relatively dry underfoot. Driving mats were in use but proper greens in play. Not surprisingly, the greens were slow and fairways a bit uneven and the course presented more of challenge as a result. There is a nice mix of holes and on a sunny day the views are impressive; in particular looking back from the green on the only par 5 12th is quite spectacular. On the day, the course was virtually deserted as the weather forecast had been unfavourable but represented tremendous value for money at a most competitive price. There is a bar area but opening times are restricted and the Bridge Inn at Duffield provides an alternative option in the absence of the 19th watering hole.
Norwood Park Golf Centre - Westwood Course
Played On 02/24/2017Played the day after storm Doris had hit. The course was in excellent condition notwithstanding; fairways provided good walking and were relatively dry. This is an all-year-round course and greens were quick despite the rain that had fallen. The course is relatively easy walking but provides a challenging test with some interesting holes. Excellent facilities include a driving range, practice area, well-stocked pro shop and comfortable bar/eating area. Well worth a visit at very reasonable cost.
Morley Hayes Hotel & Golf - Manor Course
Played On 02/14/2017Course well presented for the time of year. Proper tees and greens in play. Greens in reasonable condition given recent adverse weather. One of the few course in the vicinity unaffected by conditions.
Rufford Park Golf & Country Club
Played On 02/07/2017Disappointing to find that temporary greens were in play when the course is recognised as one that dries particularly well, and appeared to be unnecessary in the main?
