Pine Meadows Golf Club
Played On 01/09/2021Very enjoyable
I'm a member here and I'm still a little shocked at how nice the course is compared to the relatively little I pay per year. The first time I played here was in October 2019 and the course was in tournament ready condition. The first fairway was in such excellent condition I almost felt guilty taking a divot. After 15 months I've found the course does not take breaks in their maintenance. Sure it might get too hot for a while in July and August and the greens can't be mowed as tight, but for most of the year the conditions are really excellent. Big fast smooth greens, plush fairways and rough that is just long enough to present a challenge without searching for your ball all day. The course itself is a good mix of friendly and difficult holes, never too many in a row of either one. Hazards aren't always on one side of the fairway, there's OB both left and right. 2, 3, 4, 7, 13, 15, 16, 17 have forced carries over hazards, some more difficult than others.

Played On 06/10/2020Enjoyable strategic course
I was a member at this course for several years, until i moved out of the area. I enjoyed it here, had a nice relaxed attitude, greens were always nice. The rest of the course was usually in excellent shape earlier in the season, then it would sometimes burn out it a bit, and then was nice in in the fall and winter. The drainage is not the greatest so if it's been rainy, this place will be very wet and cart path only. But if you've had a few nice days, it's very pleasant.. The front nine is pretty short but it crosses a bunch of hazards so there is a lot of strategy involved. The back 9 is more difficult, with the hazards mostly on the sides. Every hole on the back has OB left. The course is a fun challenge, way more difficult than you'd expect from the back tees, and if you're hitting it sideways you'll lose a few.

Played On 08/02/2014Friendly course, although can play tough if you play the very back tees
This course is designed to get people around in a friendly way. Greens are large and mostly flat, easy to hit. Fairways are wide, with not a lot of trouble. The par-3s are tough, especially from the back tees. You do have to hit over water 3 times, twice on par 3 holes, but other than that, its very unlikely you'll lose your ball. It can be a bit bland to start with a lot of holes are similar to each other, but the course finishes well, 14-18 are all fun and interesting holes.

Played On 07/27/2014Narrow, but entertaining
This is a short course, but plays long because you are often hitting less than a driver from the tee. From the blue tees (6000) yards, it is common to only hit driver 3 times, on 6, 9 and 18. The rest of the holes you just need to get the ball in play into a fairway surrounded by trouble. Conditions have been great this year, greens firm and rolling well, fairways well maintained, nice rough. Cartpaths need some work but that doesn't have much to do with golf. There's a snack bar and bar, no restaurant. My kid loves coming here as there is plenty of wildlife. You're not surrounded by houses, just woods, so there's deer, turkeys, rabbits, turtles, etc.
Galen Hall Golf Club
Played On 07/26/2014Old style roller coaster
The course is about 100 years old, although some of the original holes are gone, replaced by a new holes 9-11. The greens are wonderful, all sloping in various directions. it's generally a friendly course, other than the par-3s which are all quite tough. The locals joke that the course plays like 18 par 4 holes, even though there's only 10 par 4s on the card. Course has the first known island par 3 green in America, the 15th which can play as long as 190 yards from the back tees.
Green Hills Golf Course
Played On 07/05/2014A darn shame because the course really is great
This is the best course in Berks County...if only they'd take care of it. Designed in the 1930s by the first president of the PGA, Robert White, he draped 9 wonderful holes across the hillside, with vicious undulations in the greens, deep bunkering and wide but very rolling fairways, the course from the back tees, the 'Monsters" is extremely challenging with a course rating of 74.0 and a par of 70.
However, the course conditions are very hit and miss. In April they could have played a US Open at this place, rock hard conditions everywhere, nice fairways and greens, high rough. It was wonderful. But now? Four of the greens are dead and they aren't really taking care of the other five either.
But that's the way it is here, it's nice for a month or two, and then they just pack it in In the fall the course becomes unplayable because they don't pick up leaves. This course could be a gold mine, because every hole is an interesting and fun challenge, but instead its as if they want people to not come back.

Played On 06/07/2014Pleasant, a few houses too close
The course has some interesting quirks that make it fun. For example, the first hole has the side of a house in the middle of the fairway. One player in my foursome hit a shot through one of the windows. However, while that obstacle is fun, some of the holes have real houses a little too close...so close that a couple of holes are actively being redesigned. it's a nice course though, starts off friendly, then smacks you in the chops for a few holes, and then finishes relatively easy again.
Walden Golf Club
Played On 06/07/2014Decent for the price but a bit chaotic
The course has some very interesting holes, and nice greens. It's pretty narrow, but not crushingly long so it's manageable. A few holes have townhouses that are just too close to the center of the fairway. #8 borders on the ridiculous. The back nine was a bit chaotic, mainly because some groups stop for lunch and some don't so there's some huge traffic jams. Also, because the homes are so close to the course, the course is their backyard so there's kids fishing, riding bikes, walking dogs everywhere. I'd have been a lot happier if this all took 3 and a half hours but we teed off at 130 pm, ran into a wall of people 6 holes later and finished at 630. The strength of the course is the par 3 and 5 holes which are all fun and exciting.
Reading Country Club
Played On 05/22/2014Old fashioned country club now a muni course, but hasn't changed much
This is a very fun course, if a bit overpriced, but even though it's a muni now, they still take care of it almost as well as when it was a private club. the greens and fairways are really nice. Ok, yes, there are some goofy holes. 3, 11 and 16 can be aggravatingly weird. But overall it's a nice trip back through time when courses were short and made difficult by bizarre landforms or other similar obstacles. Weirdness was celebrated.
