About
I started playing golf in San Marcos, TX back in 1981 with a set of Golden Bear clubs with real persimmon woods. And over the years I've played over 45 different courses primarily in TX. In HS I played on the tennis team but was never ranked.

Moody Gardens Golf Course

The course wins I lose on this day due to poor drives. Tee boxes, greens, and fairways are in above average condition in comparison to the other public courses in the area. The greens are very receptive to accurate approach shots, but pretty slick, so be careful with that putter. Winds can play with your head too. This course is hard not to like.

The fairways are in good shape plus most but not all of the greens. Several of the tee boxes are dry and pretty beaten up.
The course requires accurate tee shots, and proper club selection to land the greens and enjoy success.
There is ample timber and water to test to our game. If you're average, or just beginning, bring an ample supply of balls with you.
Moody Gardens Golf Course

There are plenty of obstacles to overcome here, but try not to think about all the water, scrub, sand traps, and wind you need to deal with. Oh yes -one more thing: Competition for food is feirce with grackles, so look out!!! There are very few weeds out here, just nice green grass everywhere. I like that!

This course will really test your nerves, thinking, concentration, and shotmaking ability. There are blind shots, intimidating water holes, sand bunkers to clear, scrub, and very challenging greens. There is damage in a few areas here but I only had to deal with it once. This is a fun course!

The course is in good shape for a municiple. There were too many tough to control, grassy weeds growing on certain holes (#1 for example) however. Tee boxes, greens, and fairways are in good shape. If you want to really enjoy your round, staying in the fairways as many times as possible. To me, #15 is the toughest hole on the course to make par on. This is one of the better public courses in the area in my opinion.

This is a fun, golfing challenge for intermediate and advanced players but beginners will get pummeled on the other hand.
The sand traps were un-sand trap-like, being damp and firm, making it tough to judge the proper club head speed on exit.
Fairways were a shinning star to me, making getting under the ball real comfortable.
The greens still have some bare spots which can cause your putts to get off track.
For me the twighlight rate made the problems here more palletable so to speak, and I enjoyed the round overall.

I don't play many premium golf courses around town but this course felt like one. From the tee boxes to the greens, there is much to appreciate here: blind shots, interesting holes, greatly cared for greens that challenge your touch and skill. You fee as though you are in the Texas hill country on the Highlands course.
The restaurant sandwich was delicious, and serving staff members were courteous and helpful.

The course layout is interesting and presents a fun challenge all skill levels of players. Greens are pretty quick plus fighting disease problems -which did not effect putting much.

The greens began to get faster as the day progressed, but challenging and fun they were. Several sharp dog legs make you think about club selections. Just a few intimidating holes here. Very wet near the greens this day. The last time I played here was about 20 years ago. Oh yes -and the burgers were better than expected.

Interesting and fun challenge. Over the years, the course has gotten tougher due to tree placement and growth on #10 & #9 #4. I also prefer having real bunkers with sand in them. Personally I don't care for hole #8. Greens are slick, so be careful. Wood structures where water meets land look really nice.

Well maintained course! Several holes are very challenging so be careful. #8 ate my lunch! Well, a grackle actually did eat my lunch! Fun layout that rewards good shot making. Friendly, efficient staff.

It wasn't worth the long trip out there. The greens were brutally difficult -like putting on concrete and tough to read. The fairway grass was nonexistent in numerous spots. Tee boxes, bunkers, and greens were in good shape. Nice course layout.. It appears that they don't have the financial resources to manage such a monstrous course.
Thank you superdave3 for your review of Houston National Golf Club. We are currently working on course conditions related to the nonexistent grass on the fairway. If you wouldn't mind sending us an email at houstonnationalmanagement@gmail.com so we can discuss further. Thanks superdave3 and we look forward to hearing from you.

Just like any course I play, you have to hit balls in the fairways or there's trouble waiting for you. So, I kept about 60% of drives in the fairway and 100% close to fairways. Greens were fairly easy to read but not easy to get the ball into them. Tee boxes on a two or three par threes were under repair and shortened, which made for easy pickings. I had a nice time overall playing from the gold tees.

Overall condition on the fairways and greens was good, but does need seed, aeration, Dallis grass control and water in some spots off the fairways. There were plenty of obstacles to make shot-making challenging, but from the white tees, greens were accessible with a fair or good drive.
Thank you for your review! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed our course and we hope you come back again to see us in the future!
