Fantastic Hidden Gem

I drove up from MD to play this and LuLu and let me say what gem's these places are! Both were once private clubs that have recently gone public and are absolute classic courses from the 1920's.
The guy in the pro shop told us that there were still 12 original MacKenzie greens left and the course tightened up and lost some parts when they added the road for expansion starting around hole 5. As a previous review mentioned, hole 2 is a classic MacKenzie design of a reachable par 5 running/sloping fairway to an uphill well guarded green. An absolutley tremndous hole. On the front only holes 4 and 7 are not original greens and the boldness of the contouring on these greens make for tremendous fun and are paced at reasonable speeds. #10 might be the best green on the course and don't believe it is MacKenzie but more looks like Maxwell design. Spend time putting on this green is there is no one behind. 17 and 18 are great finishing holes to complete this short and tight course but an absolute joy to play.

Fantastic Experience

This was my first time to the Pinehurst area and consisted of playing this and Tobacco Road as part of a package thru Tobacco Road Travel. This was my first Coore & Crenshaw course experience and it sure as heck lived up to the hype! I'll list a few of the details about the course/experience to let you decide for yourself.

First, the proshop/clubhouse was a trailer, yes really a trailer. Nothing wrong with that and actually I didn't mind it one bit. The proshop offered a nice selection though of Linksoul and Peter Millar products to make up for the poor clubhouse.
- The signage/yardage was basically non-existent on this course. They had sprinkler heads scattered about with spray painted numbers which one assumes to be middle of green. Maybe paint the back and front number as well since some of those greens appear to be 80+ yds long. Tough to gage distance if you don't have a range finder (which I did not and course was not offered on my partner's watch). Also, signage to next hole was almost non-existent except for #7/14 and no yardage markers on ANY of the tees. I understand not doing this maybe at a CC as the members/caddies should know this, but as a public course, c'mon and help cater to the public. Also, I don't see this course going Private as many do believe that this may happen soon, with that said no need to "run" to get here, but if in the Pinehurst area, get here at a reasonable rate. The range was very short and the putting green offered no "holes", so this place really is ALL about the golf course.
The course is quite fantastic considering we played the morning after they received 2" of rain and played on December 29th. When we arrived the manager mentioned it was walking only so me and my partner took the 8.5 mile journey thru the masterpiece that C&C scribed thru the wonderful sandhills. The first hole is a classic downhill par 4 that sets up perfectly for what you will experience throughout the rest of the round. The greens are quite large with many run-off areas and plenty of times requiring your bump and run shot. There were a few times where the bunkers don't bleed in to the green on areas making good shots that you thought you hit run right in the bunker as there was no rough or anything to save your ball. Other than that, this course was fair with generous landing areas for your drives and massive greens so if you hit the right shot, you were rewarded for it, no gimmicks. This course offered some of the best par-3 collection's that I have ever played with most of them having the sand waste areas surrounding them throughout. The 17th par 5 is one of the toughest 3-shot hole to get on that you will ever encounter in your life and something that one must experience! Rumor has it that they created the massive "bunkering" to replicate that of the famous Pine Valley 7th hole to that of the 17th and this is something your eyes have to witness. With the superb collection of holes on this course and the fact that you will have to use every club in your bag, I'd recommend this course to anybody if in the Pinehurst area.

Course unlike any other

This course is visually stunning on the eyes and makes you think did the Architect build himself a golf course or some sort of dirt bike track?! The first hole there sets up perfectly with 2 massive ground humps that you have no idea where your drive is suppose to go, but just hit it a bit right and you'll be fine. The 3rd hole green is one of the craziest greens with what seems to be 3 levels undulating all over the place. There are waste areas/bunkers throughout this course that you can drive your cart in and you don't rake a single one of them. Many forced carries as well to get over the humps & bumps before many of the fairways begin so do yourself a favor and drive up to the landing area before hitting your shot if you have time. The par 5 13th hole is one tremendous hole that really made for a fun 3rd shot on that uphill approach shot. The following 14th hole is the only hole on the course that offers water as it's a little par 3 over the lake with a nice backdrop to that hole. All in all, this was a course unlike anything I've ever played before and I've played Mike Stranz's True Blue and Caldoneia in Myrtle Beach. Tobacco Road is on steroids compared to those courses. The greens as well were MiniVerde greens and some of the best putting surfaces I've ever putted on and the ball rolled true and ball marks were almost non-existent on approach shots. Get here fast and play this crazy crazy course!

Nice conditions, extremely challengining

This course is usually one of the better maintained courses around the area as P.B. Dye has created a gem, but don't be mistaken this course is extremely difficult if your iron game is not on. Many roll off areas around the greens with the signature Dye railroad ties all over the place, so your irons must be well judged on approach shots. Make sure to test out the putting greens beforehand to see how they are rolling as the greens can differ significantly from day to day on green speeds there. Very nice course around the area and would recommend it to any golf enthusiast, but not really a course for beginners or novice golfers. Go out and enjoy this track!

Nice course with scenic views

I've played this course a couple times with a member as I believe it is private, but when there it does not have that country club feeling. The staff there is fantastic and they have a nice little clubhouse and practice area there. The course is nice and has many elevation changes with nice views up in the Ijamsville area in MD. If you get a chance to play this course, do so as it's a nice little track with some scoring opportunities. Also, they ALWAYS have freshly popped popcorn in the bar area, who can pass that up!

Amazing Conditions

The reviews were too good to pass up so I had to see for myself, and wow, this course is spectacular! Some of the most pristine conditions I've seen for a public course around the DMV and the rate to play here is quite reasonable that'd I'd play here soon before the secret gets out and the prices go thru the roof. The bunkering was huge and sprinkled everywhere throughout the course, but as long as you were playing the proper tees the bunkers for the most part don't come in to play. Greens were massive, extreme undulations, and ran true and fast and made for some tricky putts during the whole round. The driving areas can be tight on some holes so make sure your driver is on that day as you may be losing a few balls during the round.
I can't say enough good things about this course and would make the 2.5 hour drive again in a heartbeat to play this course again.

Views are Fantastic

If you are in the Ocean City area and looking to play this is a must play while in the area. Heck, I took a 3.5 hr journey from the burbs of MD early morning to play this top 10 course in MD. This is a Arthur Hills gem of a course and some of the views are the best in the state offering Ocean City as it's backdrop on a few holes. There is a lot of tight landing areas that go over marshland so make sure you are driving the ball well that day. The bugs are atrocious there so ensure you have plenty of bug spray as well! This course is one of my favorites in the state of MD and is almost always in spectacular condition, just make sure the greens haven't been punched.

This course can be hit or miss

I've played this course countless times as I only live a few miles away from here. The conditions on any given day are very different and I've never really understood that. Some days everything is in pristine condition and the next many of the greens have dead spots and the rough/fairway transition and bunker areas are horrible. The 2nd and 3rd holes are very tough long par 4's to get the round going. Course can be narrow at times and has some nice holes and all in all is an OK course around the area. Play here when you can get a deal online and I would not recommend paying prime fees for this course. One course though to keep in the rotation around MoCo to switch it up.

Thank you for your comments. We share your concerns about the past inconsistencies, and in fact we will be hiring a new golf course superintendent in the coming weeks. We expect 2016 to be much improved and our goal is to return Blue Mash to its full glory week in and week out. Thank you!

Fantastic Course

This is one of my absolute favorite courses in MD and anywhere for that matter. Every hole is different and most holes are very memorable with tremendous scenic views throughout the course. Always in tip top shape and they have GPS on the carts which is a huge plus! Tremendous clubhouse, nice selection in the proshop and one of the best courses in the area. Check for online deals before playing as they usually have some offered on websites, but well worth the $ to play this track.

Favorite MCG Course

Love this course with generous fairways and usually easy and true greens. Nice course to get your game back on track as it can be a confidence booster with many scoring opportunities out there. Can be long rounds on prime times during the weekends, but the course is almost always one of the better maintained of the MCG courses. Check it out.

Nice course in VA

This was my first time playing this course and I believe this course started out as private and switched over to public. Anyhow, the practice facility is the best I've ever seen and something that you could spend hours just practicing away up there that how awesome it is. The course is pretty nice and worth getting out to check it out. Usually have some good deals online that you can scoop up, and course seemed to be in pretty nice shape. Worth it to check it out if you haven't been.

Jack Nicklaus Gem

When I heard there was a new public Jack Nicklaus course coming to the DMV area I had to get out there and see what it was all about. This place is a fantastic classic layout with tight fairways, massive elevation changes and some of the better greens around the area. The 9th has to be one of their signature holes as it's a downhill dogleg left par 4 with bunkers littered throughout that is quite easy on the eyes when you are on the tee. The following 10th hole is a par 5 that's a little quirky as there is a tree smack dab in the middle of fairway about 80 yds from the green. There was also a lot of earth moving and houses being built around the golf course when I was there. Unfortunately, I could see this course possibly going private in the future so try and play the course soon, but it is definitely one of the better public courses around the area.

Conditions are sub-par

I've never played this course when the maintenance of the course has been good. Can be very long rounds during the summer time as many people walk this course that have no reason to. Nice downhill par 3 2nd and 4th hole par 5 I believe but besides that not many memorable holes. Lots of elevation changes so be sure to play longer into most greens. Much better courses around the area to choose from.

Not bad

Course can be hit or miss with conditions but for most part it's not the best of the MCG courses. Tougher layout than most of the MCG courses but does offer the best inside 9 course around. If you are a beginner or taking kids out, the Executive 9 at Needwood is the way to go. The main course can be so-so.
