Wanaki Golf Course
Played On 04/20/2019Big Flat Greens
I was looking for a golf course in the Menominee Falls area and decided to try this course as I'm familiar with Larry Packard and Bob Lohman courses so it wasn't much of a risk. We arrived with little time to practice, but they had a hitting net for free which was very useful. The Fox River is incorporated into several holes, but besides that woods and fairway bunkers are the main challenge. The greens were in great condition for mid April, but were very large and lacked much undulation...meaning they were pretty easy once you got it on. There were maybe 6 holes that demanded a precise tee shot or else you'd be dealing with lots of trees. Front 9 more interesting than the back, but the best hole was probably the par 5 15th. Dog leg left tee shot with an approachable green over the creek for the second. Playing from the white tees will result in some long par 3's. I don't think I used less than 7 iron. In summary, a good place to knock the white ball around.
Makray Memorial Golf Club
Played On 04/17/2019Pricey, but a good test
I have never played in peak season on a weekend because of the price, but it's a good place to walk 9 at. Really challenging greens demand excellent lag putting or good approach shots. Some head scratching holes like #2 which require the player to either play a draw or land the ball on a 30 yard line to have a shot to the green (because of overgrown trees) and #12 which was newly redesigned but has features that seem out of place on the course. The par 3 #4 will surely stick with you the most but I'd also give a nod to #7-9 which is a great stretch. I find the back 9 much less interesting architecturally, besides the par 5s and the challenging 11th. Good warmup area and bar.
Highlands of Elgin
Played On 04/06/2019Bad 'ole Keith Foster designed the front 9 and his former assistant Art Schaupeter designed the back. The course only loses marks for poor walkability. I'm sure the routing was influenced by the desire to spread out the 4 quarry holes across the 18. The beautiful par 3 7th is the highlight of the quarry holes, but there are many memorable holes besides these. Centerline bunkers, fescue, and fairway bunkers make the tee shots more challenging than most approach shots and greens. Great value for the quality.

This is an excellent place to golf, especially if you can hit it straight off the tee. Watch out for holes with thick woods and consider a 3 wood if your driver isn't straight. One negative is an employee who was playing behind us (~45 y/o man) took upon himself to scold me and my partner like schoolchildren for driving the carts to close to tee boxes and greens. Admittedly we shouldn't have been that close, but as newer golfers, a gentle reminder would have been appreciated instead of threatening to have us kicked out. People like him give golf a bad reputation.
