Lone Oak Golf Course
Played On 07/07/2018Disappounting
This course has really declined in the past couple of years. Crabgrass has infiltrated many fairways, the rough that was mowed was covered with long deep strips of dried clippings. Several greens were plagued with mold.
Not worth even the GolfNow rate we paid today.
Battlefield Golf Club
Played On 08/02/2015First time, but I'll be back
A friend suggested we try this course, as he had played there a few times. I located an early morning tee time at a very attractive price and reserved accordingly.
The course is fairly straightforward, though two or three holes rely on some local knowledge or past experience to play them optimally. I'm a bogey golfer and played better than that in stretches.
The staff was very friendly and welcoming and allowed my partner and me to start a bit early.
It appears that the excessive rains in the area have created a fungus on some fairways, but it's my understanding that this will be addressed in the fall by closing the course for a period of time.
This was an enjoyable round of golf, and I would play this course again.
Peninsula Golf Resort
Played On 06/13/2015First round here in a while, and disappointing
When this course first opened I played here occasionally. It isn't close to my home, and was often hard to get a tee time. And it was challenging.
Two of these circumstances are still true. But getting my tee time was easy, and now I know why. The tee boxes were abysmal, unlevel and hard ground underneath. Amazingly, many of the fairways were also rock-hard. But the bunkers were the real surprise. Most had decayed to hard pan with no sand at all, while others that I remembered from the past had been allowed to go back to grass.
Pete Dye would be quite unhappy with what's happened to his creation. If word had gotten around about the current quality of this course, it had not reached me.
On the plus side, the staff was quite friendly.
We were caught up in a large contingent of stay-and-play guests who were all slow players, so we endured all of this for nearly five hours.
I don't imagine I will make the trip to the Peninsula again for some time.
Canewood Golf Course
Played On 06/06/2015First time in a long time
A friend and I used to play this course occasionally, but as residential development increased in the area, we opted for other, more settled courses. So it was with some curiosity that I booked a round there with a different partner.
I was most pleasantly surprised. The course was in very good condition, except for the tee boxes, many of which were seeded recently. Greens were fast and in good shape as well. And only one hole appeared to have been altered since my last visit, this time by highway construction.
I would play here again without hesitation.
Marriott's Griffin Gate Golf Club
Played On 08/02/2014Good conditions but a long round for two players
This course was a longtime favorite of mine but I had not played here in some time due to rising costs. Took the opportunity to play at a reasonable price thru GolfNow.
Course was in great shape, but the pace of play was crushingly slow through most of the round. There was apparently an outing of some sort, and had we known that, we might have played elsewhere.
