El Dorado Park Golf Club
Played On 04/16/2018Much better than Skylinks
Always thought the best public course in Long Beach was Skylinks until I played El Dorado. Granted i shot on a Mon morning when its typically no busy, but it was very enjoyable. Greens were in great condition, layout is fairly easy but makes it challenging from the tips, all is pretty good. will play again for sure.
Anaheim Hills Public Country Club

his course is not fun. Majority of the holes you you can't see the green, nor an open fairway. Sharp Dog legs everywhere and tiny landing spots for tee shots. Extreme elevation changes makes some shots tricky.
Short, but tough green with funky mountain brakes. I wouldn't play here even for free. perfect definition of a "mickey mouse course"
Lakewood Country Club
Played On 05/05/2017Never finish
Unless you like 6 hr golf, this course is just poorly managed. I started to play here 4 times. Never finished once. Weekdays also.
They just crowd the course and allow 5 which is a recipe for terrible golf.
Bali Hai Golf Club
Played On 11/20/2016Almost a perfect Vegas golf experience
Need to start by saying the golf aspect of this course is top notch. You really are in the middle of the Vegas strip experiencing a fantastic resort golf feel.
The course is well kept, front level staff very friendly and professional - in fact, one of my business partners set me up with a round here as a gift. There was a mix up in communication and i showed up on a sunday, when he had set me up the day before - the staff made it work for me, and let me out within 30 mins.
Conditions were great - if there are two things to pick 1) the constant airplanes flying right above are loud, and can be distracting 2) the greens are tough to read, and they make it almost unfairly harder by tough pin placements.
Here's the big one. While you play, the may offer you some "par 3 challenges" where you pay cash and you can win a gift card. The staff who presented it to us said, the gift card applies only to the pro shop, but you can get food if you talk to them. Because our 4 some was planning on lunch anyway, we said OK - we won the challenge, and got $100 in credit. After the round, we go to the clubhouse and lady there says there's NO WAY we can use it for food credit. We were shocked, appalled at the "bait and switch". the staffer who sold us the offer was no longer on the premise. They wouldn't give us the $ back and forced us to either use the store credit or leave. We walked away with VERY overpriced golf gloves, and a very bitter taste after a fantastic round of golf.
Desert Pines Golf Club
Played On 11/19/2016There are better options in Vegas
Booking a round in Vegas is challenging as an out of towner because a) you don't know the good courses b) price varies so much between resident and non. Essentially, you could end up paying a lot for a sub-par experience, and this is one of them.
I booked via Golfnow as a "special" deal, and ended up getting what i paid for. I understand Vegas gets packed on the weekends, but the pace of play was no good. The layout, tee boxes, fairways, views were all nice - but the greens, were in bad shape. Dead grass on the edges, stiff surfaces, and track/spike marks all over. Maybe because my teetime was noon? but alot of unfixed ball marks too.
I play a lot of golf, my top two priorities are good greens and fair pace. This didn't have either.
Don't make the same mistake as I did. If you're there to drink, hack with the Vegas visitors, and simply "get out" - this will work. If you take your game seriously, there are other better options. I wouldn't play here again.
Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
Played On 07/11/2016Besides one thing, it was a great golf outing
This course is off the "main area" of SD, but totally worth driving 30 mins to. it's a great course with nice residential and mountain views. Not too challenging, but keeps it fun (i'm a 10 handi). Other than some dry patches and funky stains on the green, no complaints.
the ONLY thing i had a major issue with was the groundkeeping staff. Which is why i gave it one star on the "staff friendliness" category. I tee'd off at 8:30, which isn't super early, but i had to walk into 3-4 tee boxes with the sprinklers still going around. Like literally have to time it so you can run in hit your ball and run out - not fun, not cool.
The guys cutting the grass on the fairway, OK - do your thing, i'm going to hit and probably miss you. But the 3-4 times on my approach shots where the guy grooming the green isn't moving, i'm going to hit, but thanks for the visual, and audio distraction. Most courses, they groundscrew have common sense to move when you hit, or turn off engines or get out of your way. NOT HERE. On one chip shot 45 yards out, i was literally hitting with a moving tractor 10 feet away - the guy just had no courtesy.
It didn't affect my game majorly, but completely left a bad taste in my mouth. Wanted to complain to management, but hey, i'm not even from SD, so prob won't play again.
Woodley Lakes Golf Course
Played On 12/20/2015Better options in LA
Played on a Sunday morning in Dec. Other than the greens, the course is in pretty bad shape. The fairway and areas are not maintained properly. Pace of play is decent, but depends who's in front you.
Perhaps my expectations were semi-high after paying $55, but even for a muni, it's pretty below-avg.
It literally feels like you're golfing in the middle of a park.
