Shirkey Golf Club
Played On 10/10/2022Excellent as usual
Busier today than the past few times perhaps because the weather was so perfect. Only glitch was a 4 some that was causing a backup on the 10th green as well as 2 singles also in succession who I assume wanted to play alone. We jumped ahead then came back and finished the last two holes after. The leaves are really starting to turn color and the views alone are worth the green fees. Leaves were being leaves, but the super had someone blowing them out of the fairways.

Course was moderately busy but had no issue getting around without any delays. I live 25 miles away but would love to become a member.

This is my favorite course in the Kansas City area. Always treated superb by the staff, the course is always in great shape and the greens are fast but not punishingly so. They have removed a huge amount of needless trees and brush over the past couple of years that really open up the sightlines to other fairways and also allows more wind to circulate, especially around the large pond near the 7th green. Easily the best value for the frugal golfer and wonderful fall colors because of all the mature trees.

Have played here maybe 10 times, am knocked out by the removal of a lot of the overgrown areas along some of the water holes. It has opened up the course to a beautiful line of sight of the other holes. Players will lose a lot less balls which will improve speed of play. Clubhouse staff is always very friendly and make you feel like they appreciate you I have a course 10 minutes from my house and I will drive the 30 minutes to Shirkey's 9 times out of 10.

Tee boxes were not in good shape, hole 8 has a huge issue with a water leak of some type. It is destroying the cart path and there is no fairway to speak of; if you do land short of the green it is so swamped that you dare not try to find it. Hole #11 is also the stupidest designed hole I've ever played. You can lay up ( blind landing ) or go for the green, but the view is blocked by trees so you cannot see your ball land no matter what. It also has some sort of water issues as there are 2 different areas that are swamped. None of the bunkers have sand, so they are basically mud puddles and unplayable. There are no yardage markers and the GPS was a little sketchy so club selection was a concern. They were upgrading the lower part of the clubhouse and it looks to be very nice, but I don't golf for the clubhouse. Fix the water issues, buy some sand and mow the tee boxes.
