Greg Mastriona Golf Courses at Hyland Hills - Gold Course
Played On 06/25/2018Classic design, excellent maintenance
Excellent course and value, classic design except for holes #17 & #18, where they appear to have run out of room. Also, some of the tee boxes were difficult to find -need more signs.
Waikoloa Village Golf Club
Played On 06/20/2016Great value through GolfNow
I really like this course. I've played it on each of our visits to Big Island, and I'm liking it more and more each time. It's been somewhat disparagingly described as a 'municipal course'. Yes, it's a locals course, but the locals are great fun. And remember that Bethhpage and Torrey Pines are also municipal courses.
The holes here are well-designed, with much variety. Yes, it does get windy, but that's golf, and it's never cold. It's a nice but not spectacular scenery course like a Mauna Kea, but neither is it $275 to play. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The greens had been aerated, so they were a bit bumpy...no big deal. And the bunkers utilize some sort of pea gravel instead of fine sand - necessary because of the wind. Yes, it's quirky but playable. Previous reviewer complained about cab fare and bunkers; he didn't do his homework...should have checked with Marriott's concierge.
If planning to play more than a couple of times and have any concerns about costs, this is a great option.
Greg Mastriona Golf Courses at Hyland Hills - Blue Course
Played On 10/07/2015Beautiful classic-style course
This is a great classic-style golf course - not a lot of tricks or hidden garbage, not playing through housing developments, very walkable etc. It's a perfect 9-hole course, with mature trees and nice views of the front range. Clubhouse appears to be fairly new, and it's befitting of a country club. Evidently it's played by a lot of locals who take great pride in their course.
Copper Creek Golf Club
Played On 08/09/2015GolfNow made this course worthwhile
I'd played here years ago before the back 9 went in. The front had the feeling of something contrived to fill space between condos; it still does, with road traffic quite evident at crossings. The back 9, however, is way excellent: very pretty and interesting.
I would ONLY recommend this course if the person can get a great rate, as I did through GolfNow. The "rack rate" of all the mountain courses is pricey, but Copper does offer some good specials.
There is virtually no practice facility. The driving range is a parking lot with mats, the practice green is a joke.....but OK for warming up with soft wedges.
The greens have a lot of mixed grasses, and the attention to fairway divots was sporadic at best. The course has a lot of hidden hazards, which I consider inappropriate for a resort course with few regular players. Signage is pretty poor. SUMMARY: A nice outing if you can get a great rate.
Shadow Mountain Golf Club
Played On 11/11/2013Enjoyable old-style golf course
I enjoyed my round at Shadow Mountain. I'm just getting back into golf after a 6-year layoff, so this course was very appropriate. It's an old-style golf course, with the tee boxes close by the preceding greens, very walkable (though I had a cart). It was in good condition considering that it was recently reseeded. Not long, but 'sneaky tight'', with some of my biggest numbes coming on the shortest holes. Well-priced through Golfnow.
Collindale Golf Course
Played On 09/04/2013Underappreciated gem
Collindale was, as always, in superb condition, one exception being the recent greens aeration. Even with that the holes were small and not a huge factor - but still short of a "pristine" rating. The course played longer than the yardages would indicate because of the lush fairways and some gnarly "second cut" (bluegrass) rough.
Collindale is not a hugely scenic course, but it's "old style" in that it doesn't play through a housing development either. Good course, good test of skills.
