About

I have had the great fortune of playing over 360 courses around the country, mainly in locations I have lived, New England, the Carolinas and Florida. I have also made golf trips to Arizona, Hawaii, Virginia, Alabama, California and New York. I spent time as a Tournament Director, putting on NCAA golf national championships in Central Florida as well as college invitationals with Notre Dame, St. John's and the Hooter's Matchplay. I worked the Tavistock Cup and the UCF Invitational at Isleworth as well. I have made friends for life on the golf course and for that I'm thankful to the game.
If I'm going to give a course five stars it better be on the level of Bethpage Black, Pinehurst #2, The Ocean Course at Kiawah, Harbour Town and Kapalua as those are the best I have played to date.

A Fun Day on a Fun Course

Got to go off as a single early in the morning and banged it around in under 3 hours. The course was in great condition with the greens and most of the tee boxes being in the best condition. The layout had some fun holes with some forced carries and the par 3 were all fairly long making for a good challenge of golf. The gentleman in the pro shop could not have been nicer and really helped this first timer playing the course.

One of my favorite Ross layouts

Bass River has been changed and flipped nines since the original Ross design but you see his hands all over this layout. Playing from the tips makes for an interesting round, especially right out of the gate with three very tight chutes to hit out of on the tees to start your round. In usual Ross fashion, the course does a lot of back and forth allowing you to spray some and end up n another fairway with a have shots into your greens. Bass River also has the trademark Ross turtle back greens on several holes. The course now finishes with a fun par 3 that gives amazing views of the Bass River from the tee. I would highly recommend this course to anyone making their way to Cape Cod.

Fun layout, bad condition

We have people in our group that don’t want to pay the Harbour Town, May River prices so we are constantly searching for courses like Crescent Pointe when we get together annually. This course was certainly a “you get what you pay for” course. First the positive, the layout is great fun with water that comes into play on almost every if not all of the holes. Also, the staff was extremely friendly from the minute we got there. Now on to the condition of the course, several greens were in bad condition with A large section of 18 being burnt out. Almost every greens had small tufts of grass growing on the that was much higher than what the greens were cut to. There was grass growing in several bunkers and the cart paths are horrendous. I was hoping that all of the negative rumors about this course I had seen on Twitter were not true but sadly the folks there were spot on. The only reason I clicked that I would recommend this course to a friend is for the layout. It will take a lot of TLC to get this course to where it needs to be so it can compete for the golf dollar in this area.

Nothing to write home about

We selected this course as a halfway point amongst friends and to be honest I wish we selected someplace else. The employees were not very engaging, the driving range location is odd and the course was not in great condition. I will give them credit for the layout though as there were several doglegs and forced carries over water to make it interesting. I would recommend this course but just barely, I am not from the area but I’m sure there must be better options.

It was fine but missed out on a lot

Playing this course during covid was not the best time as the clubhouse was completely closed and most of the employees acted like they didn’t want to be there, especially the starter. As for the course itself it was in good condition, some burnt out spots but for the most part it was fine. The gimmick didn’t work for me on some of the holes, especially the Ross holes. There weren’t really any of the signature shelf greens you see on a lot of his courses. I’d recommend it for the novelty of playing it as the Old Tom Morris and Tillinghast holes are solid. I will say that the gentleman running the outdoor food stand at the turn was really great and engaging.

Not as good as last year

We played Kettle Brook last year for the first time ever and after that round it vaulted into our Top 10 Public Courses in the state. Upon our return in 2020 we found a course that had burnt out fairways, grass growing in several bunkers as well as rocks in some bunkers. I will say that the course is a fun layout and the scenery is excellent. Several holes have forced carries or water hazards that come into play. Two of the most scenic holes are 12 and 13, a par three that is all carry to the green and a short par four flanked by a red barn and silo. I would still recommendation course to anyone looking for a round in central Massachusetts but I was a little let down by the upkeep.

Always fun

We play this course at least once a year and always have a great time. Brookside is always in great condition throughout the course. There are a couple of “tricked up” holes that sometimes play unfair and there are several blind shots mostly on the front nine. This layout relies on elevation changes and subtle hills throughout the course to make up for the short yardage. It’s the first course you hit when you cross over the Cape Cod canal and it should be on your itinerary for a buddies trip to this area.

Great shape inside the ropes

This course has come a long way in the last two years. As long as you are on the tees, in the fairways and on and around the greens you will enjoy the condition of this course. Straying off the fairways will leave you with some tough and bare lies though. The layout is really clever with some long par 3’s and 4’s. Every hole is tree lined and some are fairly tight as well as having some forced carries. I am happy to improve my review from the last time I played Maplegate because it was always a good layout and it’s close to home.

One of the better Ross courses we have played

Whenever we are looking for a place to play we go out of our way to find Ross courses. We have played over 25 of his courses now and we were really happy to add Plymouth to the list. The course is typical Ross with elevated greens that will make you pay for missing them by 5-10 feet as well as subtle breaks on every green that make you work for every putt made. The round starts off easy enough with two holes side by side that each look as wide as football fields but as you meander along into the more wooded holes you will have the put the ball where Ross tells you to, especially off the tee. This course is in our Top 5 Ross courses played and I would certainly go back and play it again.

A spectacular Ross layout

Brad Faxon should be removed from the golf community permanently for selling this course to a contractor who is going to build houses on the property. Opened in 1901 and later designed by the great Donald Ross there is no way this course should be allowed to be swallowed up. The layout is true Ross, with fairly wide fairways to hit and trouble all the way from there into the greens. The course was in great shape today and the greens were quick. It is only open until the end of September so you would get out and play this gem before it becomes a house. Brad Faxon, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Always a fun time

Though the wind was gusting today it as still a fun day on this nice Silva Cornish layout. The course was in excellent condition with lush tee boxes and fairways. The greens were consistent and have a lot of subtle breaks to make them very interesting. The course is filled with elevation changes and the fairways are fairly wide. The facility has a.good practice area and a large expansive clubhouse. You might find the cost a little high but the course is worth the extra cost over most properties on Cape Cod.

A take of two nines

This was our first time playing at Acushnet and we really enjoyed it. In these days of walking only in Massachusetts because of our governor I can tell you it was pretty walkable. The front and back nines are VERY different with the first being typical New England golf with woods on both sides of every hole. From there the course completely changes as the back is wide open and the wind is the main element. The course was in very good condition with thick rough and very quick greens for this time of year. This is a real hidden gem in Massachusetts and if you’re putting together a Cape Cod/Plymouth golf trip maybe add this course to the list. The only drawback was the way they handled the cups for covid, the course had cup covers that were level with the ground so any put the went over them kept going.

A very short typical Donald Ross course.

First I’d like to say that even with all of the covid restrictions the staff here was extremely accommodating and friendly. The course itself is very short with most of the par 4’s being under 300 yards. The elevation changes make for some great views and scenic course shots. They do have the typical Donald Ross elevated greens with hard cuts that will make a shot missing the green by five feet leave you with a 20-25 foot next shot. Condition was good though a couple of the tee boxes were chewed up. If you want to play a Ross course at a great price this is the place.

Fun and fair

We selected this course because Tillinghast had a hand in the design and we were not let down. The layout was fun and fair with some tricky shots like the approach into 14 and the second shot on 4 make for a great test. The greens were firm and fast with some subtle breaks and some fairways were rather wide allowing for forgiveness whole others made you put it where Tillinghast tells you to. I would highly recommend this course for anyone interested in an enjoyable round of golf.

Nice layout

Drove to Connecticut to play some golf during the Coronavirus when Massachusetts wouldn’t let us play. The course was a fun layout with several doglegs and some forced carries. The greens were in good shape and the other thing I noticed was the excellent condition of the fringes and areas around every green. Tee boxes were ok and the fairways were a little rough bu there has been a lot of rain over the last month.

Made the right choice

I was debating between four courses for my one round of golf in the San Diego area and I certainly made the right choice. I was lucky enough to get paired with a member who was a really great guy, which made the experience even better. The course was in very good condition, greens were quick and rolled consistently. The difficulties at this course is getting off the tee as optically the shot look more difficult than they are and the area around the greens is tightly mown. I was a little surprised at the lack of pushing people along by the rangers and that the course allowed t-shorts on the course but other than that it was a great experience. If you only have time for one round in the SD area I would certainly recommend this course.

Truly spectacular

It is kind of sad that a lot of folks from Phoenix and Scottsdale think that this course is too much of a trek for them. This is a true gem of a golf course, the layout is one of the best I have ever played and the condition is top notch. With elevation changes and several semi-blind shots, Wickenburg Ranch will make you work off the tee. The greens are large and they all rolled true for us on this day.
We just played six courses in the area in six days on a buddies trip and this course was in the top two alongside Quintero. Also, the service here was over the top, especially the bartender Mo, she will surely make you laugh. If you’re planning a trip to Scottsdale suck it up and make the hour long drive to this course, you won’t be sorry.

Truly Spectacular

From the moment you pull up to the bag drop you know this is going to be special. Everyone we came in contact with at We-Ko-Pa was great to deal with. As for the course, the layout is one of the best I have seen in all of Arizona. And the views, wow the views, my camera couldn’t keep up with all of the scenic shots from the course. The layout itself is fair but challenging in spots. Some holes have some very tight landing areas and the greens were well bunkered. The elevation changes, though not dramatic like other courses in the area, still make you think over the ball. The greens were a tiny bit slow but they were consistent throughout. This is a must play for your buddy trip itineraries in AZ.

Solid layout but poor service

As one of the most popular resort type courses we were a bit surprised by the poor service we received at Troon North. The course itself was in good condition and the layout was fun. With some rock formations that actually come into play this makes for a very different kind of golf course. The greens were top dressed the day we played it which made them very slow but we get that. So on to the staff issues, I know this happens on a person by person basis so you might not experience any of this but I felt you should know. First off when we arrived there were two vans at the bag drop tying up traffic. As we sat there with our blinker on to turn in there the guys at the bag drop looked at us a couple of times but ignored us. After five minute we went and found a parking spot very far away and had to lug our clubs to the bag drop area, wasn’t expecting that from this place. The pro shop staff was fine as were the folks in the restaurant. From there we went to the range where we were told we had 20 minutes so we broke it out as 15 on the range then 5 on the putting green. After 10 minutes an employee came up to the range and said he was taking us to the course so no putting for us. He took us to the first tee at monument and drove away. With no starter there we were sent off blind with no information about the course to go by. These issues really left a sour taste in my mouth and actually made me regret that this was the course I bought a shirt from ( I only buy one on every trip). Again, it could have just been us that got this level of service but I thought everyone should know how it went for us.

Spectacular layout

Several people from the area told me that this would be the best course we were playing on our 6 day buddies trip and halfway through the trip they are correct. A spectacular layout in incredible condition led to a really enjoyable day. The one interesting thing is that the practice area is in the middle of the course, over a mile away from the clubhouse by cart. The facilities are nothing to write home about so if you want that post round beverage with an amazing view it won’t happen here. But if you’re here to play an amazing golf course this IS the place. The course was thick and lush and the greens were lightning fast, be sure to land your approach shots well short of the pins and let them feed to the holes. Lastly, everyone there was spectacular including Sydney in the restaurant and the starter who really laid out the round for us. The ride is not bad at all from Scottsdale and so worth the trip. Play this course.
