Brookwood Golf Course
Played On 06/26/2023It would be nice for high handicappers, if the fairways had grass.
The course is well set for high handicappers: not busy on weekday mornings, no sand traps to slow things down, reasonably open hole layouts, and rough that is not punitive. Unfortunately, the fairways are a total mess. You pretty much have to play ground under repair for all the fairways in order to find patches of grass to place your ball. The saving grace is that it's one of the least expensive courses w/cart which I have encountered in a very long time, so it's better than going to a driving range.
Oak Valley Golf Club
Played On 05/07/2021Amazing value for a Palmer design
The designers did a great job with this course, and the staff keep it up very well. Since we were a twosome about two hours after opening and there were a number of foursomes ahead of us, they recommended that we play the back nine first, take a short break for lunch, and then play the front nine with a member single. It worked out wonderfully. It plays longer than the card due to the use of hills and water. Even the one jammed in par three (#8) is an attractive and challenging hole.
I would definitely return the next time I am in the area on I-40.
Jamestown Park Golf Course
Played On 05/06/2021Pleasant surprise
I was surprised at how hilly the course was, compared to the courses I typically play further east. The mix of sidehill lies and trees added effective length to the scorecard.
The greens were in very good shape even though they had been punched a few weeks earlier. Staff was pleasant, and it was a good value. We paired up a lunchtime tee time with a minor league baseball game that night, and it made for a very enjoyable day even though my scorecard might disagree.
Anderson Creek Golf Club
Played On 10/27/2021Great weekday value for money, but geared towards regulars
The course design is excellent with five sets of tee boxes where none of them feel like an afterthought. The residences come into play but except for a couple of holes with townhomes on them only the most errant of hitters will really notice. Very interesting and sometimes deceptive use of bunkers, so you really had to think about each shot - not "Target golf" but course knowledge would play a big role.
The massive challenge for a first time player like us was the lack of any meaningful yardage marking except for the 150 pole. No GPS on the cart is ok, but at least mark the sprinkler heads and the cart paths.
That said, the course was excellent overall, very friendly staff and a great value for the price. At noon on a weekday we had the course to ourselves until a single caught up to us as we were trying to figure out the 16th green. It is in a gated community so leave yourself a few extra minutes to arrive in case the gate house is busy.
Belmont Lake Golf Club
Played On 07/07/2020Excellent design for all hcp levels
As a high-handicapper senior, the thing that struck me the most was that the tee positions were really well thought out at all five levels. I didn't feel that the gold tees (5400) were an afterthought, the amount of distance and approach angle taken off from white to gold and gold to red was well designed.
The course was in really good shape except that the greens had been punched a few weeks ago and were slow and you could still see the sand, but they were holding well and rolling true. Pace of play as an early Tuesday single was a snappy 3 hours on the nose. I didn't really check out the clubhouse or restaurant.
Quail Ridge Country Club
Played On 10/08/2020Great design, picked a bad day
We played off of the senior tees and originally wondered why they were so short, nearly 1000 yards less then the whites. Well, the Maples design is great and the elevated and protected greens add effective length. A pleasant variety of holes and maybe only a couple felt jammed in.
The challenge we had was that they had seeded and heavily watered the fairways, so it was cart path only and balls just died in the fairway. Multiple places where you just had to pick up and drop 10 yards away. The necks approaching the elevated greens were treacherous with the extra watering.
My out of town playing partner agreed that I should give it a try again in the future, especially for the price. But not in early October again or after any kind of meaningful rain.
Riverwood Golf Club - Deer Run/Riverview Course
Played On 08/25/2020Will definitely return
For the most part, great condition. A couple of the greens were being worked on if they didn't get a lot of wind. I stopped after 9 because I wasn't feeling well, but would definitely return. Lots of sidehill lies, cart path only the day I was there on several holes. I played early on a weekday and the pace was fast. Looked like almost all members at that time, they knew the course and kept it moving.
Hi, We are so pleased that you enjoyed your time at Riverwood Golf Club - Riverview/Meadowlands Course. We look forward to seeing you on the course soon for another 5-star experience!
Longleaf Golf & Family Club
Played On 08/27/2020Enjoyable high handicapper course
I ended up playing as a single as the twosome I was paired with wanted to play alone due to COVID concerns. With 7 tee boxes, the pace was super fast. I passed up a twosome and was the lead player, finished in 2:45, and felt rushed! The twosome behind me were playing off the 3500 yard tee box so they were really quick! (I was playing the "4.5" which is about 5200 yards.
The course was in very good condition. The design layout is just ok, but it is geared towards newer players and seniors. Greens were fast. Bunkers were a little uneven.
I will definitely play again, and am considering a membership.
Indian Valley Golf Course
Played On 08/18/2020Great except for the dead greens
Ellis Maples design is well thought out in using the Haw River. Good mix of water, sand, and doglegs. Only holes 11-12 seem like an afterthought. Senior tee boxes were not consistently placed, but if I was a repeat player I'd known them. Played after a storm the night before and the course was soggy, not really unexpected but made it play much longer due to the design. $27 riding for a weekday morning was fantastic.
But.... the greens. Really bad. Hundreds of ball marks, tons of dirt. Play here, but give them six months to figure out how to get the greens back to an acceptable level.
Keith Hills Golf Club - White Course
Played On 06/24/2020Well thought out layout
Surprisingly busy for a weekday morning, but mostly twosomes and we finished in 3:30. We played Black to White, both of us liked the Black 9 better. Difficult course for a high handicapper, but the senior men's tees were well placed. A few too many forced carries off the tee. Greens were well thought out and in very good condition.
Thank you for visiting us at Keith Hills Golf Club. We appreciate your 4-star feedback and hope you join us for another round soon!
Wendell Country Club
Played On 06/30/2020Needs reconditioning
Friendly staff, great pace of weekday morning play, and cheap. But.... the course is in rough shape. Significant bare spots in the first cut of rough on many holes, and even on some of the fairways. Three holes were under major repair (10, 11, 18) and cut down to par 3s, so the back is par 31 right now. Design is forgiving for a high handicap working on parts of their game, like I was. It wouldn't be a challenge for say a 9 hcp. Not a lot of sand, water is found on most par 3s. No map of the course on the scorecard needs to be fixed.
