Great Course - Give it a week

Overall this is fantastic course in the San Antonio area. Staff is very professional, course is in decent shape (more below) and costs this time around were amazing.

Course Conditions - We got to go off cart path finally, and I saw the ball hit and run for the first time in a while. The greens look like they just got some top dressing with some sand. Although there was noticeable sand, it did not impede the roll of the ball, you just needed to clean your ball each time you putted. The tee boxes were a bit fuzzy in some places, but overall in good shape.

This was my first time being able to use the range prior to teeing off because I was not being rushed off the boxes. The range balls are provided, but the size of the warm up bag is very very small.

The bar area is under renovation too, so off course amenities were limited. I did see the beverage cart more than once as well.

This was the first time playing the creeks; which is probably the most forgiving of the 3 nines. The creeks is wide open with some interesting dog legs, but they were generally very generous to a miss, and not overly penalizing.

I got paired with two beginners - no issues there. However after a few holes, I decided to play on my own and didn't see another group until hole 16 of 18 - I played 18 in about 2 hours and 45 minutes - and that is after playing the first 4 holes in about 45 minutes.

Nice But Not Worth the Price

It was rainy and Drizzly, so unfortunately the course was cart path only even though the course was dry. This was my first time playing the course and I was told it was a good course.

Overall the course was pretty easy and not that much of a challenge. Bunkers were in good shape but the greens were spotty and bare on some holes. It was obvious they lost some of their greens. Hole 14 was the worst of all.

Carts had a rain cover to protect the clubs. That was nice. The best piece of golf gear I own came in very handy again, a hand squeegee!

Range balls are included but had to hit from mats. The mats do not allow you to put a tee, small or full size. The range is elevated too so it was hard to get distances.

I saw no beverage cart. The course is well laid out. I just don’t know if it is worth the prices being charged for greens fees. There are better options in SAT for that price point.

Standard Muni, with Mature Trees Everywhere

Overall, this was a decent track. Nothing overly challenging, Basic Services, Priced Right.

1. Price - If you are military or first responder - DO NOT BOOK ON GOLF NOW! - it is less expensive to book through the course.

2. There is a range to warm up, but you get to shag your own balls and it is very small. There is a chip and putt area, but no bunker warm up area. There is a seperate putting area in front of the clubhouse, that was a pretty good representation of the greens and pace.

3. There are some very mature trees and the fairways can be tight because of them. The course is pretty simply laid out, but the one thing that I found to be a challenge was clear markings for the holes. Painting on the cart parth or staking out signs directing players where to go would have been immensly helpful. There are a few holes, where you can get turned around if you have never played here.

4. The greens have some character to them. The warm up green is pretty good represenation for pace and conditions based on what I saw and experienced. Same fo the undulations on the actual greens too. Generally they were is decent shape, but most have crab-grass growing up that can cause your ball to go off-line. There are also areas where there there was bare grass and dirt, but they are minimal and improving based on what I saw.

5. Food and Drink was very limited. No Beverage Cart, and no food from what I saw.

6. Bathrooms need some serious work. They were quite nasty.

7. Pace of play was OK. I waited for a two-some 3 holes behind me so that I was not consistently crawling up the 4-some in front of me; which I did multiple times.

The name "Country Club" is a bit of a mis-nomer based on some of the other "Country Club" courses I have played in the past and within the area. The course was good for what I would expect of a budget course. This course could get really fast in the heat of the summer.

Worth The Drive

This is my second time playing this course. Wow what a gem. Today the conditions were better than the last time I played, but it was windy, so on some holes it played crazy LONG!, but on others the golf gods smiled on me, and I hit a drive 377 yards because of some help tin-cup style (ala the cart path).

I would play this course anytime... the only challenge is that it is a 45 minute drive for me, but well worth it. If you live in the San Antonio area, take the drive to come out here and play, you will not be disappointed.

Winter Conditions and Wow... Windy!

This is not the first time playing thise course and based on the recent heavy rains and cold snap, the conditions of the course were rather poor, allow me to elaborate.
1. Rain water collection in most sand traps, so they were generally unplayable. This will of course improve through time.
2. Washed out areas on greens; there were a few greens where they were making improvements (obviously), but the weather made a huge impact to them being non-playable based on where the ball ended up.
3. Pace of play was horrific, even though I saw the marshal a few times; I didn't see him making any effort to move people along. Total time to play 18 was a little under 5 hours. (NOTE - the high winds did not help, but there were some players ahead of me that should have been playing a few tee boxes up vs. where they were playing from)
4. Would be helpful to see where other carts are on the GPS provided screens on each of the carts; as there are a few holes where this would be very helpful to improve pace of play.

The front nine are more difficult than the back nine and this is a challenging course. I will wait till the Wx improves to play here again. The starter was very friendly, but he could have spaced out the starts a bit more because we started the back up on hole 2 and it did not improve and it really backed up on holes 10 and 11; this did not improve for the remainder of the round.

There are some very nice views from this course and we had plenty of wild life in the rounds.

Continuation for Awesome Course

Only comment I have is that this is now the 2nd time I have played this course, but I was disappointed that there was no mention of having a kids tournament going on; therefore I was pushed out earlier than planned and was unable to warm up, even though I got there in plenty of time to do so. Additionally I was required to play the same front and back nine vs. playing two different 9-hole courses.

Pins were in some tough places today, but they were generally getable if putting well. Conditions were amazing again and this is becoming a favorite for me.

WOW - What a GEM!

When I first arrive in a new cirty, I love to go play golf and ask where others like to play. I have been in San Antonio now for a few months and one name that kept coming up was the Hyatt Resort Course - Well as my dumb luck would have it that is the Hill Country Country Club on Golf Now!

Here's my Review:
1. 27 hole opportunity
2. Course layouts different between each 9 hole layout. I played the Oaks and Lake and one was very tight and required targeted shots with very undulating greens; while they other was very much a "resort style" course - with wide fairways and forgivig approaches. Greens still had "character" thought too.
3. Warm Up Area looked nice and fully complete with bunker area too - I didn't use it because I got to tee off as soon as I got there because the course was generally empty.
4. Pace of Play - Amazing - 2.25 hours for 18 holes!
5. Carts - GPS with Rain Covers and BRAND NEW. Plus you get 2 waters per cart to boot!
6. Club House and Staff: nicely stocked, reasonable prices and staff were very friendly and helpful.

Bottom Line - I would love to come back and play here again in less windy conditions, but I am in TX afterall.

Great Course - But Conditions Did Not Support Cart Path Only Limitations

So I am going to be brutally honest. First time I played the course and was restricted to cart path only, I understood due to the heavy rains. However the other day when I played, the Weather was perfect (for fall golf) and we were still restricted to cart path only. When I asked the starter why (OBTW - no mention of this in the clubhouse during check-in) he stated that it was because of the draught and hot summer.

OK - so here's the funny thing - I played two other courses during the holiday weekend and none of them were restricted to cart path only. Both had equally as nice fairways too... Neither were goat tracks that needed to be watched over. -- This I did not understand nor could I comprehend it.

Here's the effect of this decision - 18 holes paired with 3 others took 4.75 hours as compared to 4 and 3.75 hours respectively at the other courses.

Course conditions: IMMACULATE - as one would expect for cart path only restriction

Greens: much better this time as they were nicely cut; however every pin was crooked and was not sitting level. Some of the pins were in extremely tough positions, which made playing this course a challenge.

No Beer Cart - nor mention of this at check-in either.

Food: Quesadilla - so/so -- no contiments or salsa - basically microwaved tortilla with some heated up buffalo chicken (which was actually its saving grace).

Marshall: Seen once but never did he push the group ahead of us that thought they were pro's and hitting from tips; when most should be on RED tees. There was one player that maybe was a blue tee player. Slow play causes us to barely make it in before nitefall; and the players behind us hit into us 3 times becuse they could not see us due to falling daylight.

I would really like to say this is one of the best courses in the area, but unfortunately, I cannot due to the limitations they put on themselves. Let me know when cart-path only limitation is lifted as I would like to come back and play as a normal course.

Nice Track - Horrible Pace of Play

Nice Course overall - however the comments about pace of play are right on the money. I saw the Marshall once, and that was when he drove his cart to the cart barn to go home for the day. We waited on every teebox after 3 - this was due to the group 2 groups ahead of ours. They were the definition of slow, plus it did not help that the group in front of us thought they could play from the Whites, when they should have been on Red / Gold.

Overall Observations:
1. Course conditions were fantastic - greens were a bit slow, but they rolled true.
2. Tee boxes for Par 3 holes were being saved, so you had to tee off outside of the normal boxes; which mean "rough" - these could have been better maintained.
3. Warm up area -
3a. range - you will hit off mats, but it was not bad, becuase the mats accepted longer tees vs. hitting off the rubber ones. - Range makers need to be improved though.
3b. putting area - nice and it gave a decent expectation for green speeds on the course and there are some undulations and hills that mimic what is on the course.
3c. bunker area - did not see one - bunkers on course were hit and miss, but generally nice and fluffy sand

There was no beer cart or mention of not having one on the course when I checked in.

Getting There - DO NOT TRUST GOOGLE - it will take you to a gate that is closed on weekends. - use the Randolph AFB Main Gate. Then once you get on the base - it was a bit of a nut-roll trying to find the course, as it is on the other side of the airfield.

Overall - I would play this course again based on cost - for less than $20 as a member of GolfNow you can't find a better deal in the San Antonio area.

Hidden Gem - Conditions (TEMPORARILY Rough)

First off - very happy to have found this hidden gem in the San Antonio area. However with that said and giving acknowledgement to the recent poor weather (heavy rains) - the conditions were less than favorable. Just wish the staff would have warned me.

1. Greens recently resanded and uncut.
2. Fairways uncut

I will come back to play this course, because I can see that it would normally be very well maintained. Very Green and lush, similar to other high caliber courses in the area given the high heat and low rain.

Somethings to Consider:
1. Range is farther away from clubhouse than normal - you will take the road farther than one would expect to find. Very open to the elements and based on high winds it was hard to dial in shots prior to teeing off for the round.
2. Hole 1 is equally as far from clubhouse and driving range.
3. There was a starter, but nobody after that, to include beverage cart; however there were plenty of water cans on the course. Not having a course ranger allowed for a 5-some and slow play in front of me today - however they were very polite and allowed my group to play through at the turn.
4. If you have cart-path only play (which I did) then plan for long walks from cart path to ball if not near cart path.
5. This is a challenging course if windy!
6. Traps were well maintained and had soft fluffy white sand.
7. Carts have GPS with geofencing - consider resetting geofence, as I had to back up a few times because the GPS said I was off the cart-path, when I was not. This was a bit of a hassle on a few holes, and actually frustrating.
8. Carts have "rain cover" and cooler - which was nice to see.

Not Quite Where They Think They Should Be

Having never played this course before, I did due diligence and read some of the reviews. Most of what I read was accurate. Allow me to explain.

Good:
1. Course conditions are generally good; however some of the tee boxes were slanted and the teeing grounds needed to be trimmed up a bit. (see pic)
2. Course is VERY VERY VERY tight and narrow. It is playable though and there were holes that you needed to shape your shots. Overall I liked the layout, as there were a few risk reward holes and now that I have played this course, I know where I can grip and rip.
3. Greens were generally in great shape, even though they were freshly resanded. The sand did not impede the roll of the ball from what I experienced. Unfortunately, as I have become used to, I had to repair pitch marks on the greens more often than not. (Come on everyone do your part to ensure we can continue to play fantastic greens).
4. Penalty area were not overly obtrusive or abundant. This is where now knowing where they are allows for some more aggressive play.
5. Warm Up area was ample and cost for range balls was not bad.

Improvements:
1. Outhouses in place of bathrooms. For a course that wants to charge what it charges, this was a bit of a shock.
2. Water Cans - They do no exist on this course, so bring your own water. This was shocking as it gets really hot in San Antonio, and I actually considered this a risk to playing this course.
3. Pace of Play - No Marshall seen - so the pace of play was a bit slow. There were 2 foursomes ahead of me, where the players egos got in the way of playing where they should have teed off from (enough said). -- Moving up a box only improves your scores and enjoyment of the game. There is no harm in doing so if you can't drive your ball past the forward tees.

Overall - this course has potential to be outstanding, and I would / will play here again, just don't know that I would pay full price. This is a good GolfNow location.

All I have to say is WOW!!!

If you are looking for a challenge in the San Antonio area and a course that is in outstanding conditions, then look no further. I have recently relocated to the area and am an avid golfer. All I can say, is that I will be back!

Here's my evaluation:
1. Clubhouse - fully stocked and staff very helpful and friendly
2. Warm up area - nice, but you have to hit off of mats vs. turf. There are plenty of stations though and warm up balls were in good condition too. There is a large putting green and it rolled pretty true to real course conditions. I did not see a chipping or bunker area though to practice those critically important shots.
3. Course - All I can say is WOW! - Out of all the courses I have played in the San Antonio area (The Quarry, Olmos Basin, Brackenridge, Golf Club of Texas, La Cantarra, etc) this course is one of the best. I would put it in the same category as the Quarry for conditions and difficulty. Green complexes were as challenging as Olmos Basin. The only negative I would say is that the bunkers were a little rough and there were some overwatered areas near some of the greens (aka - squishy) - but nothing to the point of unplayable.
4. I saw comments about the starter, but the gentleman, David, that started us was friendly and extremely helpful to let us know the conditions and limitations for the day.
5. Refreshments - Saw water cans on multiple holes. Cost for a hotdog and drink was reasonable for a golf course and quality was good too. Hot dog was fresh, bun was soft. I saw a drink cart twice, which was OK.
6. Discounts - They offer military discounts too, but I got my tee time on Golfnow as a hot tee time, so I saved more that way.

Negatives:
I saw no Marshalls to help pace of play, but those groups that I came up on, playing as a single after the first nine, let me play through and were very friendly. Ended up playing my round in 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Thanks for an awesome experience.

Nice and Simple

The course was a nice executive course you can play in less than 2 hours easy. The tee boxes greens were not well groomed or maintained. That is the negative for this place. However for $10 I was not expecting much.

However it would have been nice to actually have a teeing are with grass less high than the rough. Once you got off the tee box the course was ok.

The greens were atrocious though. Crab grass everywhere and they were extraordinarily slow. There was not a smooth putt to be had but again for $10 I can’t really complain that much.

Awesome conditions

The hot now tee time was amazing. Pace of play was fantastic, played 18 in 2 hours and 5 minutes, even having to wait for some of the greenskeepers to see me when they were watering the greens, which was no issue.

Almost got stuck behind a sixsome, but marked my ball on 18 and jumped to one to finish my round the. Came back to finish 18.

Corse was in amazing shape. Greens Rollie’s true and fast. Continually fixed divot marks on greens but unfortunately I have just gotten used to doing that because others don’t.

The free chilled water bottles one and ten were welcomed due to no on course support. However the water coolers spread throughout the course needed to more ice to remain cool in the exposed hot sun.

Having just returned from San Antonio where the courses were no where near in the same conditions as the courses here. Had to get used to playing on grass vs. dirt. Putts rolled true and fast too and very welcomed, the greens staff deserve some serious kudos!!

Hot and Bumpy

The Wx was a hot and humid day in San Antonio, aka normal. There was a little wind, but nothing to cause concerns.

Practice area is very nice, but you have to hit off the mats and were restricted to irons only. Coming in from out of town, this would have been nice to know prior to getting range balls. There bunker complex to practice was awesome too.

Going off on the back nine, the starter was mid-way down the fairway vs. starting from the tee box. I found that to be a bit odd. But I was off and running with no issues... until I came to the greens. They looked fast, but played very very very slow. They were very bumpy too. It looked the they punched the greens a while ago and they were starting to come back. They needed to be cutt and rolled, and that might also be the greens staff defense to the hot and humid weather, I don't know.

Pace of play was awesome until I got stuck behind 2 foursomes that looked to be on a buddy trip. I get it no worries, just would have been nice to be allowed to play through.

Course marshall was nice and had them stop at the turn, so we could play through. The only other comment I would make is that there were a large number of non-par 3 holes that were cart path only, but didn't appear to be based on course or weather conditions. This is a hilly course, so plan to do some walking even if you have a cart.

This is and remains one of my favorite courses in the San Antonio area.

Awesome Deal for "Heroes" (First Responders and Military)

First time playing here and enjoyed the experience. I was paired with a member and guest and it was awesome to play with them, because they had the local knowledge.

Course was not all that challenging. The challenge was putting on greens that had just been punched and they were still in recovery mode. They were quick and will be great in about another week or so.

Awesome benefit for "hero" discount 50% off!!!! -- That was not expected but very welcomed. You get a very small bag of range balls, but it was enough to warm up.

The starter was awesome and very friendly. All staff were nothing but professional. The only other downside was playing behind 6 dudes that wanted to play a six-some and were smoking a crazy amount of weed. Had to get the Marshall out a few times to break them up... but once that was done, pace was relatively OK, still slow, but manageable.

I would definitely play here again if I am back in the LA area.

Nice Course, but packed and Fuzzy Conditions

Overall the course was fairly easy. Fairways and restaurant were nice, but that is where it ended for the positives. Food was well cooked and tasty, fairways were well manicured and rough was non-existent. Bunkers were relatively nice too.

Tee Boxes - looked like my backyard after not being mowed for 2 weeks. - Grass was way to high to be considered tee box. Looked more like rough.

Greens - fuzzy and very bumpy, because they looked like they were just punched about a week ago. Rolling them and cutting them would improve their conditions substantially.

When hitting the range - required to hit off mats. Driving range was STUFFED and you had to wait for an open slot. Once you got one if you didn't know it you needed to bring your own rubber tees or buy one. No one in the clubhouse said anything about this. Also you were required to hit off the mats.

UNBELIEVABLE

Holy Smokes!!! Enough said! -- The south course was easily in my top 5 courses for beauty and set up. Playability was outstanding minus the one hole with a double green and no drop zone.

If you are looking for picturesque golf course look no further. The staff was nothing but professional hospitable and amazing.

The course was a multi-picture course because of the views. If it is a windy day, this course could be an absolute beast, but the day I played we have picture perfect weather.

I know where I will play again when I return, and I can't wait to play the North Course for comparison!

Great Course... and Conditions To Match

If you live in the St. Louis area and are looking to play a course where the greens run fast and true, check out Tamarack in Shiloh, IL. It is worth the drive from the city to play this course. The course is in amazing shape and there are many courses that charge way way more and are in less better shape in the local area.

They have a great putting green for warming up and the best part is that they roll as true and fast as the actual greens you will be playing. They have a nice driving range.

The burgers and fries are awesome too! When playing holes 9, 10, and 11 - if you have a colored ball - change to it, because you will be playing next to the driving range and white balls will be a challenge to find if you happen to go left or right of the fairway, just something to consider.

When we played the other day, the pins were in some pretty heinous positions; which required some great approach shots, but the other thing it did was truly provide a challenge. Even though the greens have some serious character it is not to the point where they are unplayable or cause too much of a challenge to make the course no fun to play.

If you haven't played Tamarack lately... come and check it out, you will not be sorry.

Wow...what a hidden gem!

Take the time to drive out to Godfrey, IL to play this hidden gem of a course. The staff were extremely friendly and the course was in amazing shape. We even got a treat to see some deer and wild turkeys.

The course is in amazing shape, and the name says it all. The course has character and charm. There are plenty of hills and sidehill lies. The greens have slope and run true. There is even a short executive course and driving range too.

The pace of play was excellent! There is water on the course, and this course requires the player to play some target golf; while there are holes where a player can tee it up and let it fly, with wide-open fairways. There are two holes that require a player to play a draw to a hole that is 90 degrees left from the tee box, but very doable and there are local rules that preclude the player from taking it over the trees... so don't make that mistake.

They offer military discounts too, so don't forget to ask for that as well. Awesome track and well worth the drive if you are tired of playing the same ol' course.
