Makalei Golf Club
Played On 03/10/2020What a pleasant surprise!
Was feeling cheap after 10 days in Kauai playing on the nicest courses. Have already played the "Big Courses " on the Big Island (Mauna Lea, Mauna Lani, all Waikaloa courses etc.) So I looked for bargains this time. Found Makalei above Kona (8 miles away) WOW what a find! The clubhouse is at 1900 feet elevation and goes up to 3000 ft at the 9th tee. This makes a big difference in temperatures and winds (both lower than near ocean courses). The course is BEAUTIFUL! The path to 1st tee runs through lush landscape (be prepared to drive almost 10 minutes uphill to tee). We saw mongoose and peacock in first few minutes. We also saw wild pigs, Nee Nee geese, turkeys, canaries etc. The course is not In picture perfect shape like Mauna Kea, but is in very good shape with greens in very good to excellent conditions. There is a lot of elevation changes as well as sloped fairways. Layout is very interesting and a lot of fun. Great views all the way to ocean. If you can't hit straight, stop at Walmart and buy a bag of used balls. Fairways are nice and wide BUT are bordered by thick grasses. Price is about 1/6 to 1/10 price of other courses. Loved it so much we canceled a "big course " to play there again.
Spring Valley Golf Course
Played On 08/16/2019Good value
Course is in good shape and has a very interesting layout. Houses only border 2 holes and come into play on only one of those.
Deer Creek Golf Club at Meadow Ranch
Played On 12/23/2019Nice layout- different than most front range Colorado courses.
It was a pleasure to arrive at the course and see trees. While there are not enough to seriously impede your game they are a relief to the eye and occasionally require some thought off the tee. Challenging layout from back 2 tees. Significantly easier from Silver and Green tees. So everyone should find a tee location to suit their ability. Do not over estimate your prowess off the tee or the round will be torturous for you and groups behind you.
Ko'olau Golf Club

I was worried about the condition of the course after reading many bad reviews here. However when I just limited reviews to those given in last 6 months I noticed they were much much higher than those more than a year old, so I took a chance. Two days earlier I played Turtle Bay, so I had played highly rated courses and was prepared to take a step down. Boy was I surprised by this course! It was fantastic! I arrived 45 minutes early because I didn't know how Waikiki traffic would be. No problem. Nic in the Pro Shop was absolutely great! He offered advise on the course and the surrounding area. He said I could go out early or hit the range. I went right out because the light on the mountains was incredible. I started on the back nine because utility company was doing work running lines on the front. I had a love/hate relationship with course over the first three holes. Absolutely loved the views but lost 3 balls. I thought every hole was going to have a forced carry over jungle. Fortunately, the course let up after the first 3 or 4 holes. The greens might not have looked perfect but they putted true and were fairly fast considering they had gotten 6 inches of fain earlier in the week. While it was cart path only, the course wasn't that wet. In fact I didn't even get my shoes muddy. The course layout is not one where you can just bomb it off the tee. It really makes you look at the situation and think about where you have to hit the ball. Sometimes you need to hit less than driver to set up your approach shot to minimize the danger. The course was in very good, if not perfect, shape. An earlier review pointed out damaged areas caused by wild pigs, however I only noticed that on two holes and only on one hole did it come into play. (Also saw a few of the culprits running through jungle.) The front 9 was much easier and no need to keep cart on path. They offer a replay at the cart only rate so I played the back 9 again. Much better results as I understood how to approach those tough holes. Every staff member was very friendly. Even the guy at the snack bar offered to get us cups of ice and asked if we needed cold towels. I would definitely play this course again. I thought it was a much better experience than Turtle Bay and Hawaii Prince course at much lower fee. I would urge you to play it before the fees go back up to reflect how great a course and location it is.
Lone Tree Golf Course
Played On 02/24/2017Soggy fairways but greens were in good shape
With all the rain in northern California this year it is difficult to find a place to play that is not a quagmire. For the most part Lone Tree was dry enough to walk on the freeway without sinking to your ankles in mud. Needles to say the course has not seen a mower in quite awhile. The round was long because on practically every shot the ball would disappear into long grass or plug in the fairway. The greens were in pretty good shape with not much trouble with footprints.
Yocha Dehe Golf Club at Cache Creek Casino Resort
Played On 06/29/2016Nice course in great shape with very friendly staff.
Course is very expensive (even with GolfNow rates) but at least the staff does everything they can to make it an outstanding experience. This makes a big difference. Comparing it to another course similar in quality -- Primm golf club Lakes course -- Primm has NO water at all on the course and even restroom sink had non-potable water. YDH has refrigerators full of water bottles every few holes. Both have ice chests with ice but YDH has towels in ice to keep ypu cool and others to keep your clubs clean.
Franklin Canyon Golf Course
Played On 06/04/2015It would rate higher if you could finish in 4 hours
Greens are still in good condition and fairways aren't too bad despite water cutbacks. A nice place to play if you have plenty of time. A lot of places to look for misplayed shots and people will spend time doing just that.
Primm Valley Golf Club - Desert Course
Played On 06/05/2014Great course
Beautiful layout. Many interesting holes with multiple ways to attack. In pretty good condition considering desert weather.
Delta View Golf Course
Played On 05/06/2014Awesome Views of Delta, No Crowds, Great Design
This is a gem of a course that is pretty much wide open in the afternoon. Play at a quick pace. Alistair MacKenzie design on the back nine is beautiful. Fairly well maintained for a public course. A couple of rough spots on the greens have shown up since last month. but overall very true rolls. Views are great too. Try it out
Rio Vista Golf Club
Played On 6/24/2013Not up to usual standards
Has Shea Homes fallen on hard times? There is an obvious lack of maintenance. Tees are beatup dried out areas in fairways and some greeens have nare spots.
Bethel Island Club, The
Played On 1/21/2013Poor old Bethel keeps getting worse
Upon reaching the first green you realize you won't be able to putt on a normal to fast green for weeks. The green looked like a closely mown section of the fairway except it wasn't so closely mown. Having a downhill putt meant you only had to hit it like a canon. Uphill putts were fun. You could haul off and smack it and not worry it would go past the hole beyond the range of a gimme. Fortunately, all the greens were not in this poor a shape. This is one of the few courses in the area where you get more roll on your drive now than in the summer months. Also I almost lost my ball in a bunker. Not because of a lot of sand but because the weeds were so thick. Other bunkers had no weeds but also had little sand - more like soft dirt at best and hard pack at worse. Feel sorry for the course - it used to have really nice greens and a fairly challenging layout. Hope they can keep it going. It doesn't deserve to die.
Brentwood Golf Club - Creekside/Hillside Course
Played On 12/18/2012Some new problems
One can tell the course has been cutting some costs. The tees are spotty and portions of the fairways need attention. Some traps contain lakes and rivulets, but this may be a temporary condition. The greens however are in good shape with true rolls despite the footprints caused by wet weather.
