Skip

Perhaps when this course was private it got the care it needed, but that sure isn’t the case currently.

Almost every fairway was rock hard and covered in dirt patches. The lack of pride you see in the golf course matches the lack of pride you see in the run down homes surrounding the golf course.

With a decent layout and lots of old trees, this course gives “retro” 70s vibe. Unfortunately, it didn’t appear they’ve watered the fairways since the 70s.

The greens were the only thing keeping this course playable… minus #10 that had sand ant piles surrounding the hole.

Won’t be back unless there’s rumors of mass overhaul. Place is going down hill. Skip IMO

Pros and Cons

Pros: Solid and challenging layout. Great scenery and setting in wildlife. Feels like a private course as there is rarely anyone out there. 3.5 hour round.

Cons: Expensive green fees and range balls. They didn't re-register with FSGA / GHIN so you have to manually enter your score for handicap purposes. C'mon Harmony!! No drinking water on the course! Bad Covid excuse from the clubhouse attendant.

Paid $80 for the round... can't really justify paying anything more than that.

Overpriced for what you get

Crystal Mountain is a pretty cool resort in general. In fact, the California Club in the restaurant was probably the best I've ever had. Unfortunately, the Mountain Ridge golf course is just overpriced for what you get. At $140 I would have expected to not be hitting out of mud on numerous tee boxes.

The layout is decent. Some holes are VERY average and some holes are pretty cool, but overall nothing to write home about.

Pace of play on a Saturday morning was very slow. There were 3 groups lined up on #1 when we teed off. We waited every hole and almost every shot.

The course has some challenging aspects to it, but attention to detail was lacking. No way they should be charging over $100 to play this course. let alone $140. $75 would be doable based on the condition in June 2023.

The greens however, were in great shape and rolling nicely.

Overall, just a big let down in course quality and conditions based on price.

Disappointed

I was super pumped to play this course. The pictures and commercials make this place look quite majestic. Not the case... I guess you get what you pay for. Royal St. Cloud is the Motel 6 version of whatever they try to be.

1st impression. Outdated gas carts, no window to pull up to prevent wind coming in the cart. No usb.

Range was a dog track. Warmed up hitting out of the dirt. 1st hole on the white is also dangerous as the range fires into you from a pretty common landing spot.

Course also dog track-ish. Just overall very poorly maintained. Greens were mostly in rough shape. Tee boxes not much better. Not 1 of the 100s of bunkers were raked.

Some of the pot bunkers were a joke. It looks like someone just went out there with a shovel, dug a 2 foot hole and threw some sand in it.

Really got the Muni shooting range vibe here as you’re just on top of everyone. Poor layout in general.

And the worst thing, we played a 3 hour front 9. The back 9 was about 2:10 which was good.

Won’t be back. Won’t recommend. The great Google image pics, cool commercial and decent rate got me once...: never again.

The staff was friendly as 1 plus.

What’s going on here?!

Drove about 45 mins to play this course as my buddy raved about how good of condition its usually in.

Friendly staff and cool layout/setting, but the course was in absolute terrible shape. The greens were ok, but the tee boxes and fairways were a joke. Tons of brown patches, weeds and dirt all over. It’s almost like the whole course is infected with some type of turf disease. It wasn’t just a few holes, it was every hole and every tee box.

I asked the cart attendant and he said it was the cranes who ate up the grass. That for sure isn’t true. Cranes aren’t new to this area, and based on previous reviews and my buddy’s experience of playing this course in great shape something is wrong here!

Hopefully they can fix it, but definitely not worth the drive if it’s going to be in that type of shape.

Poor Decisions by Management

I actually really enjoy(ed) this course. The layout is challenging and it forces you to play strategically and keep the ball straight. The course is typically in average condition and the greens roll pretty nicely.

I've been playing early tee times on weekdays and it's been great. My buddy and I typically finish in under 3 hours.

Last time we played they let some "members" go off on the back 9 in front of us. This is extremely frustrating as the main reason for paying for an early tee time is to be able to play fast. I brought this up to the clubhouse attendant and he said there was nothing he could do.

Management like this is why this course barely has enough money to keep the course in average condition. Not sure if i'll be back.

Great Layout - Terrible Greens

We went to Gaylord for our annual golf trip and opened up our weekend with The Tribute. I played the tribute about 4 years ago and loved it, so I was pumped about coming back with our group. The layout of the course and the views are very impressive. We were the last groups of the day and the starter even let us go off as 2 5somes. So far so good.

It's unfortunate because the greens were AWFUL. I should have taken pictures, but imagine a calico cat with brown and orangish burn marks all over it. Almost every green had huge spots like this.

We played treetops the next few days and the greens were in great shape. So an excuse about the weather is just BS.

Not sure what the solution is, but man were those some terrible greens.
