Fox Run Golf Club
Played On 07/03/2015Worth The Drive!
Well, if you're looking to play a Resort Course, this isn't the place......
What you will find here is very welcoming staff, a cozy clubhouse in a rural setting (next to a small airport) and a fun well kept, diverse golf course !!!
#1 starts out fairly benign, dogleg right, to a slightly elevated green. From there, the rest of the front is fairly open, with some tricky greens. #4 is a longer Par 4 to a bowl of a green, that demands being on, or making a miraculous save. On #5, the pin was tucked back right, and even putting right of the pin meant you'd be chipping your next!
#9 (the adjacent dogleg left to #1's right), a short Par 4, begs for a draw around some large pines with water right if you don't quite pull it off.
10 is dead behind the green, 11 and 13 are drivable for the big guns, but especially on 13, death looms short as a pond fronts the green. There is a small approach from the left to an uphill sloped green. (Don't do it, play it safe Luke Skywalker!!!)
There are some fun elevations, a couple narrow approaches, a few greens are like 'rollercoasters', but all are true and speedy.
We had a fantastic day here, and if I lived close, this is a place that I'd love to be a member of.
Thanks for having us!!!
Mount Snow Golf Club
Played On 06/14/2015Fun, challenging, Resort Course in Vemont setting....
I love this place!
It has everything a golfer could want.
Nice clubhouse, relaxed atmosphere, inviting staff, and an interesting course layout that can challenge anyone!
Course was in very good condition considering this was a wicked tough winter here in the northeast. A couple greens had some chatter, but most all were in excellent shape, cut to make your knees knock!
Lots of elevation changes, blind tee shots, doglegs, you name it, you can find it here.
I can't remember a flat lie all day, which for me, makes the course fun and interesting!
LOL, probably a reflection of the state of my aim, rather than a course malady I suppose!
Anyway, we were paired up with a couple from Massachusetts that only verified the old adage: 'If you're a golfer, you are my friend'!
A great day of golf!
Pocono Hills Golf Course
Played On 04/27/2015Quirky, but fun!
We booked at the last minute in the afternoon while on a golf trip to the Poconos.
Course has some 'quirky' holes for sure , traps were like hitting off the road, but for the most part, fairways and greens were in pretty good shape for early spring. More than a few blind shots.....
Front 9 plays through wooded areas, back 9 through the Resort.
Course isn't long, but a well placed tee shot is needed on many holes.
Having a cart was nice as we hadn't played here before and it was nice to take a ride up and get a lay of the land on holes like #4.
We absolutely owned the place as there was nobody in front of us, and ripped through the round.
Staff was friendly and fun.
All in all, a good time!
Cobleskill Golf & Country Club
Played On 09/01/2014Nice 'Old Style' Layout
Very friendly staff.
Interesting layout.
Not long, with reachable Par 5's and a couple drivable Par 4's, but it's defense is definitely the small, fast, undulating greens (I'm pretty sure my living room is bigger than a couple of the greens here, #1 for instance).
Doglegs, elevation changes, blind shots, water, sand, penal rough, great views, this place has it all!
A couple notable holes here too. #5, a shorty, but you better play it correctly or suffer (hey wait, even if you play it conservatively, it can bite you!). Also, #17, Wow! A very angry looking Par 3 with a two tier green, great fun!
Well worth the drive!
Sea Scape Golf Links
Played On 08/28/2014Keep it in the fairway !!!
This was a fun course.
Although not long, it is key to 'hit it straight' as trouble looms on every hole.
Tough to find balls in the rough (not hard to hit out of, however), but beyond the rough are 'lions, tigers and bears'.
'Cousin It' mounds of grasses line the fairway rough and forced carries giving the course that 'links' feel.
Dogleg's both left and right, some water hazards, some narrow landing areas.
Keep the driver in the bag except for maybe a few holes.
Can be a long day for beginners as was evident by the group ahead of us......
Well worth the booking!
Carolina Club, The
Played On 08/25/2014What a great place to play !!!
Carolina Club is worth every penny!
Not especially hard, but can be enjoyably played by both beginners and advanced players.
From the friendly staff, to the starter's lengthy, but informative schtick, to the extremely well maintained course, this day was an absolute joy!
Notes from the starter's playbook:
Hole 6 is a brute. Forced carry, a couple bends, water down both sides (left water is in the tree line).
Hole 7, island green (no more needed to be said)
Hole 9, and I quote: 'probably the most interesting hole on The Banks', Par 5 needing perfect placement on every shot, reachable if you know what you're doing, .....I couldn't agree more.....
Hole 18, easy Par 5 if you play it correctly, but watch out for the fairway bunker left, and don't be left or right of the green as the traps can get ya, and for God's Sake don't be on the other side of them like I was (left, flop over to a downhill green....death...).
Sand, water, doglegs, and all the trimmings.
Go there !!!
Timber Banks Golf Club & Marina
Played On 08/10/2014Nice Layout, Nice Condition, Not So Nice Greens
This was my first time playing the course, so I will have to chalk up some missed opportunities to inexperience.
I'll play many holes differently next time around.
Overall I thought this track was very nice.
Lots of sand to avoid, some shorter par 4's as long as a couple brutes. Doglegs both left and right, elevated greens, forced carries, etc..
Rough adjacent to greens often long and penal, so don't short side yourself!
In very nice condition and staff was very friendly.
The one knock I have is the greens.
Although in good shape they are certainly not friendly with mammoth undulations, and pins often on small shelves.
All in all, lots of fun......I'll be back!
Canajoharie Country Club
Played On 06/07/2014Worth The Travel
A little off the beaten path, but well worth the drive. Front side somewhat though the woods, back open and hilly. Although not long, the defense of this layout is the greens. Receptive, but fast, they have many undulations that can rack up strokes quickly. Also, there are a few drivable and shorter Par 4's, but beware, the greens are wide, but very shallow, with death beyond! Very friendly staff, well maintained. An enjoyable day!
Lake St. Catherine Country Club
Played On 05/31/2014Great Value, Neat Layout........
I used to play here years ago when we bought the Vermont Golf Around Card, and always liked the traditional layout. OK, so it's not a 'Resort Course', but it's in good condition (especially after this last winter), and it's a blast to play. Although short, it was windy the day we played which made it pretty tough! Some serious elevation changes (both up and down), some 'visually' tight holes, some drivable Par 4's and fantastic views. A very tough walk if you're so inclined. Staff was extremely friendly !
Great value !!!
Ballston Spa Country Club
Played On 10/25/2013Great Fall Golf Day
Has some neat holes, and, a couple 'quirky' ones also. Course was in excellent condition, in fact, I've never played it when I didn't think it was in great shape. Greens were hard and super fast. Fairways were almost totally leaf free (hard to believe for fall season). An absolute wonderful day of golf for a great price !!!
P.S.... Sausage and chicken gumbo at the bar was worth the trip in itself !
Thunderhart Golf Course
Played On 10/15/2013Fun, friendly, scenic course !
Played with a couple members. Very friendly folk!
Views were great, greens in great shape, moved right along, what's not to like?
There's a couple pretty tight holes. Some water, doglegs both right and left.
Would definitely recommend.
Ballyowen Golf Club
Played On 4/24/2013Great Links Course
What a great place.
Early spring play, the greens still recovering from aeration, but the course was in great condition anyway.
Great layout, and with windy conditions, it can be a bear to play. Best played around July when the grasses are up to get the full effect..
Mount Airy Golf Club
Played On 4/23/2013Nice, but would play other courses in the area first.
Was nice, but after playing other courses near by (Jack Frost National, Split Rock and Great Bear ), was a little disappointed. Had a couple very interesting holes.
Of course, a big bonus is that the Casino is right there.
Really can't beat the value though, paid $25 through GolfNow.
Great Bear Golf Club
Played On 4/22/2013Fun, Challenging Course
Staff very friendly. Early spring golf, but the course was in great condition. Very nice club house. This was our first trip to the Poconos and will definitely return to Great Bear !!!
